Moral of the Vtuber story is have low expectations and be modest. Spending thousands of dollars on Vtuber models and something you've never tested out is never a good idea. Try designing your Vtuber yourself, that's what a friend of mine is doing and if it doesn't really work out you're not out a lot of money.

However, if someone is starting out as a Vtuber, I would recommend making it yourself, use a template or png ilustration, even paying for a very basic model for a low price can be an option. From the opinion of someone who animates using 3d models I've made from scratch in blender. The workflow for a 3d model typically goes: sculpt > retopologize (so it can be animated without setting fire to every GPU in the local vicinity) > rig (weight paint). each step can increase in complexity and does not include the quality checks and corrections, such as verifying importability, you have to perform to make sure the model will fulfill its purpose. If you want me to come up with a model based off a one pager you've written about an OC, it can take me a couple weeks to go from cube to a rigged model with face animation. So yeah I'd charge a few thousand. But if we're really paying attention to who's popular in the market, Your model won't be the most important thing about your Vtuber because *you* are necessarily the most important thing about your Vtuber. if you're gonna start as a Vtuber you might as well use a single PNG in the bottom corner and at that point it might not even be worth that. tldr: IMO, skip the Vtuber, go entertain, think about the vtuber later.

Honestly if all you want is a model to have fun with, just have a base with movement, eye/mouth control and a few expressions is enough. a few hundred and you're good, can add to it later if you get a following or if its something you want to do long term and dont burn out. Yeah, you can totally spend a couple grand for a bespoke avatar, and if you know how to get the most out of it then yeah, you'll probably stand out from the crowd, but that doesn't equate money spent with success. I'm a CG artist - yes, prices are insanely overblown. I saw people pricing themselves for 20k dollars, for not even that impressive from 2D character from technical standpoint. Being generous, making one, relatively good 2D character would take you (if you work on it 8 hours a day) few days for art, up to two weeks for rigging, animating is like one or two days of work. I'd say two to three weeks of work. Earning 20 thousands of dollars per two weeks of work could let you rent a private jet. And people were running over me, when I pointed it out... For 3D model it would be a bit closer, since modeling and painting from all sides would double the workload, but I still wouldn't take 20k dollars for it. Up to two thousands of dollars for a really advanced 3D model would be the most I would take to be fair.
@Raya.T
@Raya.T 2 года назад
You might be a CG artist but have you considered that the cutting the rigger usually has to do is incredibly tedious since the majority of art being delivered is not cut properly? rigging isn't as simple as it seems either most of the riggers I personally met work usually 3-4 weeks on the model to get everything just right that the client wants and that is with art provided by the client. like I'm not saying the prices are right but to simplify it that much is also wrong. you are saying for a 3d model it's a bit closer but that is more wrong if we talking about the general 3d models that are used by vtubers. They are miles easier to make and take a lot less time to do.
@WwZa7
@WwZa7 2 года назад
@@Raya.T You have absolutely no idea how 3D works, do you? I know that rigging is tedious and hard, but it's deffinitely not 3 weeks to a month of full time work hours, just for rigging, assuming you already had prepared proper assets. I have created both 2D rigged characters and 3D rigged characters (I know you can find only old minecraft stuff on my channel, but over these past 10 years I done much, much more than that of professional work), it is difficult and time consuming indeed, but it's not as bad as you paint it... And than you come from assumption that 3D just is simpler... BOY! You just haven't seen a well made 3D anime-like character, haven't you? Most likely you did, but it was so well done, that you didn't even knew it was 3D. Point being, if you take the quality of a professionally drawn 2D character, for texturing a 3D character, model and rig it properly, I assure you, you will not even notice it is a 3D character. And that's why people just opt for 2D - why would you add aditional labor to model the entire thing, and rig it in 3 dimensional space, and also put your GPU into slightly bigger strain due to amount of textures and verticles on it? What you usually see used as 3D characters, are models created from 3D character generators, with already rigged almost everything. You than just need to slightly modify the shape, add some assets, your own hair, and texture it, but you can just be lazy and put some colors onto it, and it will still look fine. But if you want something high quality, you either need to modify it so much that you will have to re-rig most of it, or do it all from scratch. So in conclusion, yes 3D is much more consuming if you want it to be as of high quality as 2D. But if you don't have time or money, it's easier to make something in 3D.

Its like buying a $30K Red Cinema camera to shoot a daily vlog when you have never vlog'd before. A lot of people forget that people like iJustine have been doing RU-vid videos for more than a decade now and were even creating content for several years before they moved to video. In a lot of cases many have a staff as well that are professional at operating the cameras (OR THE OPERATOR OWN THE EQUIPMENT AND IT IS PART OF HIS EMPLOYMENT TO SUPPLY IT) that they use for video. in some cases the equipment as a product ot be reviewed that the company just never asked to have it returned. after the review (Not so common these days)

Looks does not matter much when it comes to Vtubing but it does help a little. The essence of Vtubing is the personality of the streamer and Hololive knows this which is why their members dominate the community. Take the new Holostars EN for example, the members avatars look decent but every single one of them are multi talented and have great personalities. Great personalities will make the stream more enjoyable for the viewers.

My only real concern about the raise in the cost of models is that some riggers may be increases the price for no real reason just to make more money. Instead of responding to one of the following an increase in their production costs, more people asking them personally for a model, or a major increase in the quality of the models they make for people. Charging people more of the same work just because you can is nothing but greed.

Some people pay also for the artist (the vmodel mama)'s fame. Also, is not wrong to charge what you think you deserve and more because technically, artists are also charging for commercial use unlike their usual stuff that is only for personal use only. They are paying for full ownership of the model + time + experience for it.
@MylonDiggs
@MylonDiggs 2 года назад
@@skullysinner Actually any artist that is charging a streamer for commercial use and or full ownership of any model they are commissioned for is scamming people and needs to stop. Because commercial use by definition requires a financial transaction to take place which does not take place on streams due to them being free to watch and donating to a streamer is not the same as buying a movie ticket. Furthermore, artists do not own any part of any work they commissioned for. If I pay someone to make a model based on my own original character, they don't own it, I do. Lastly charging people more for the same work because you think you deserve it rather than based on any of the reasons listed in my initial comment is greedy plain and simple.

Most I spent on my model is the Live2D cubism subscription since I'm self made. Many people can also just get by with a PNG model. A model can carry you, sure... But the main thing keeping people around will be your personality and possibly your voice. When I started vtubing, my model was a mess and my mic was a cheap USB mic. I had to be a few months in before deciding I really liked this hobby, and I wanted to invest into a better mic. For me was already a BIG purchase JUST for an HOBBY. People jump into this hobby thinking they can make a living off it right off the start and get the money back and to spare, because they see big vtubers do "something anyone could do" with a "cute model". It's just not how it works, wish more people realized.

I feel like that’d be a more reason’s place to start, and if you like it, THEN go the Live2D model route. From the perspective of both a partnered streamer on the broadcasting end and a commission artist who makes assets for VTubers; While a bespoke, high-end model in the tens of thousands of dollars range is absolutely worth the quality and effort put in by the individual or team behind it, they're ultimately a luxury and not even borderline close to a necessity. Many currently 'big' VTubers started their streaming career as facecam-on 'flesh-tubers', or even faceless voices. Even more high-end model buyers and hopeful VTubers dump thousands only to have the most mediocre/disappointing 'debuts' and 'graduate' (let's just call it -quit-) barely weeks after. If you're planning to take on streaming as more than a hobby, you're going to need to put in the work to build it up from nothing. VTubing is NOT a get-rich-quick auto-success card, and if you treat it as such you're just going to disappoint yourself when you discover you have little to no charisma to back up your spending.

Many vtubers start as a PNG Vtuber (is a single picture or 2 comission) to test the waters if they like the whole process of streaming. My first model was like 40-60 dollars and was a 3d model (that is done with a program I can't remember) for like over a year to test if I liked it and if my pc can handle multiple programs. And my current model was like 150 in the art and 90 in the rigg I think. Will I recover my investment? Probably, will take a long long while, but I'm in no rush, this is just a hobby to do something else while I have a normal job for the rest of spendings. But for many Vtubing is the same as when they wanted to become a youtuber, they want the dollah because they only see the succesful ones, and got hit in the face that is a harder thing to keep up if you lack passion.

But at the end, the fact that gaming is fun is only a kind of prejugee from the society. You struck the nail with the investment topic. The commitment and investment is MANDATORY in this field. No half assing in any area of time, talent, likability, stream shit, and most importantly quality. If your stream is shit, you can have the most expensive model with as many booba animation and fireworks emotes for the stream, it all means NOTHING when your first stream turns your rig into a smoking brick. And your VTuber career will never get off the ground if you live on Twitter. Dedicate all your time on either VTweeting or VTubing, you can't have both and expect to get paid.

That is a good price for your model! She's very cute, and well-animated for what she does (standing around and talking). And you also had a good following built up before commissioning her, which was a smart move. You knew you enjoyed streaming and making videos, and that that's a viable path for you. Taylor the Fiend is technically a vtuber, too, and he was also smart in how he went about it. He started out with a static image to represent him. He built up a following, and then he commissioned a simple 2D animated character. He grew his following, and now he has a cool 3D avatar. It'sAGundam also experimented with a 3D avatar, and I guess he decided it didn't work for him. But he also had a good following built up before trying it, and it seemed like he was doing a lot of work on that avatar himself, so it probably didn't cost him a whole lot of money (just time). He has since abandoned that avatar, but his videos are still enjoyable, so it doesn't really matter. You don't necessarily need an avatar that can do pretty much anything imaginable (including Rule 34 stuff), like what Projekt Melody has. I think she took a big chance on that model. It paid off for her (including a lot of SimplyFans money), but that's not a course I'd recommend to everyone looking to get into vtubing. Not that I'm an expert on vtubing or anything; I don't really even watch any vtubers, unless you count people like Rev, Taylor, and Gundam. But for some reason, I do enjoy watching guys like Rev and Hero Hei talk about vtubers, and all the drama in that community. It's weird. I'm weird. Meh, it's okay.

I stream as a hobby. I have been for a little around a year or so now with the last 3 months of this post being consistent with it. As someone who isn't concerned with the numbers and more so the interaction, I like streaming as a hobby. So I drew myself a simple png and honestly, I don't think there is any shame in being one. If you like streaming or making content in general, then work with your budget in mind. I took a year building my pc and another year slowly buying the parts to stream properly and I had fun talking with the 2 to 3 regulars who come and chat with me while I am fucking about. There are also cheap and free tools to help you for a model if you don't have a large budge. There is no shame in that. Everyone starts from the ground and you shouldn't be aiming to be the next Korone or Gura or Projekt Melody. You should see how far being you will take you and focus on your own stuff with tempered expectations. If you do blow up, cool. If it is slower than you like, take some advice and see if it helps yourself. TLDR: Make sure you don't break the bank and be smart about your budgets before sinking investments into anything for a hobby.

I made mine 100% by myself after I saw the prices people charge for their models. Which isn't a problem by itself, an artist can charge however much they think their art is worth. Just I'm broke and was like "this is all far too expensive for me guess I'm learning how to use Blender now." It took me a year to do so, it's very labour intensive, especially if you want your model to be nice at the end of the day. It usually takes me a month to two months for one 3D model depending on the complexity. Which is why models are so expensive, 2D or 3D. Now I just don't have time to stream lmfao I feel like people think being a Vtuber or anything of the sort = instant fame and that's where they get lost. Ascertain the risk of spending so much money, start out small. A lot of artists will do simple models for very low cost or find an artist who wants to practice and is willing to do free models that way. But, at the end of the day, if you're boring... no amount of money spent is going to save you.
