Seriously. I love watching the Explosions in the Sky at the AB video because of the sound quality and correct levels. I went to see them live in a small-ish club and holy shit they sounded awful and it seemingly wasn't their fault, it was the sound guy. They play a LOT of high notes and every high note they hit made this awful ringing/screeching kinda noise. I mean I love that band and I HATED that show. Really goes to show what a good sound engineer can do for a band.

Happened in London too. Either everyone saw this video and copied it, or for some strange reason a crazy melody like that is so funky that people will get on board with it and sing along in spite of how crazy it is. They are truly awesome to be able to get the crowd to do it - without even asking!

Pretty good yes. I still think it's too bad they don't really go for the tight funky drum sound that the recordings have. It's probably harder to attain live, but I'd love to see them try [harder?].

This would be difficult because each live venue uses gear that is meant to accommodate a wide variety of musical styles. The drum sound Vulf gets in the studio is due to the sheets they put over the drum heads as well as the compressors they run the drum signals through (which are typically meant for studio environments and not live shows). I'm sure there is also a decent amount of EQ and effects that happen in the mixing process to get such a tight sound. It takes a long time to get a good drum tone in a studio setting (sometimes a full day or more of tweaking) and when you're playing at a live venue, there just isn't enough time to teak this much, let alone setting up your own compressors and EQs to the house PA system just so you can get a funky drum tone. If Vulf had all their own gear while they toured, including the PA system, they could make this happen, but if they're relying on the venue's PA, there is only so much they can do.

Ancienne Belgique is quite known for usually having great lives mixes.

Usually because the kick drum is far too big and boomy. The drums here sound superb (and like actual drums!), which leaves space for everything else.

A good engineer knows, compression is your friend......

A lot of top musicians do this. If you think about it, its the logical end game of improvisation. If you don't know what something is going to sound like before you play it, are you really deliberately choosing notes? And on the flip side if you do, you can sing it before you play the note :)
