People always get mad at border patrol for taking immigrants back to Mexico but this is the exact reason why we have border Patrol! These people get smuggled in and many get left to wander in the desert and many die out there and It is very tragic! Human smuggling is a crime because of the number of death's is very high. Everyone just thinks it's about illegal drug searches and not wanting them in the country. The border patrol are just enforcing the laws put in place by the government. I watched a show about it and this lady working BP was asked what the hardest part of being a agent was to which she replied" Finding the bodies of children" because " she is a mother with children around the ages of many children found passed away". And when the immigration conversation comes up this is one fact for both side's to look at and consider.. Use it as common ground to figure thing's out as it is pointless to bicker and bully when people are dying every day for a better life. Those lives should matter reguardless of where you stand politically.

This wonderful lady is known to put forward only the facts, whatever the political meaning she has. She does an amazingly good job of putting words on death and that to embalmers is just nonsense. I have worked in a funeral home and in Norway we do not embalm at all. Besides those who die abroad and are sent home in a coffin, and the Royals are embalmed ❤ ️

I work for a fire dept in south Texas and it’s not uncommon to get medical calls from BP (border patrol) or dps because they found a person who is dehydrated, injured, have been bitten by rattle snakes or because they need assistance in the recovery; a lot of these people have been walking for days/weeks who either walked it alone or got left behind by a group because of their condition. It’s one thing to hear about it on the news or in a video ( such as yours ) but coming face to face with these people makes you realize how desperate they are.

@Talamasca007 that as well, but i think it's important to provide them somewhere safer to go. also, not just can't fight because they're dying of starvation. also can't fight because fighting could very likely lead to death and they have a family to provide for. or can't fight because they got caught up in some serious shit and will be killed if they stay in the country. or can't fight because they're not a revolutionary and don't have the skill to help enough to counterbalance what they could lose. honestly, it's an awful situation all around and i definitely think the mexican government holds a whole lot of responsibility.

@@spiritmatter1553 Ah yes, because someone desperate enough to try and escape poverty that they'll risk death definitely has the time and resources to come here legally. In most cases they need a sponsor, either a citizen or company, they need to undergo medical examinations, a "naturalization test" which is basically a history, civics, and language test, then also be able to pay the fees to file all the paperwork needed. If someone is desperate enough to try crossing a desert that's known for killing thousands, just telling them "do it legally" isn't going to pay for their education and filings.

I am a veteran, a political science major for my bachelor's, and I completely support this video. I love this video because it is non-partisan just as death itself is. Not matter who you are, what power or money you hold, noone should be left in the desert to rot as an example to others. When we die, all we have left is the memory we leave behind in the minds of our family, and respect should be paid to them if not to the person who died. As for questions, I actually do have 1. My passion in life has always been history, and as such, I would like to be buried in a very traditional coffin. A very simple pine coffin would suit me well and, as morbid as it may seem, later In life I hope to make it. Is this legal to do? Can one be buried in California in a homemade, proper coffin without any embalming? I live history, teach it, and it is a passion I wish to carry with me when i go, so I just have to ask

I was required to teach The Devil's Highway early on in my career as a composition teacher. I still think fondly on some of the research projects that my students did based on it. One award-winning essay my students wrote was about the environmental impacts of all this travel through the Sonora Desert, which is home to some threatened species and the introduction of litter, habitat destruction, and yes even bodies is making serious changes, apparently. Another excellent essay I got was about the role of border patrol agents who often act as first responders and, contrary to common belief, often attempt to save lives out there whenever they can, but the desert is a difficult patrol and there aren't many of them relative to the expanse of that desert. There were a number of other excellent essays too, including looking into push/pull factors for immigration or even comparing it to other often-crossed borders. Honestly, I didn't expect this today but thank you for doing this video Caitlin. It's a complex issue but it's also really important for people to understand just how complex it is!

Whatever happened "early on in [your] career", these days they're dumping the water left for dying migrants, and laughing about it. Or they're trespassing on Native American reservations and ramming the residents with their SUVs. We've got this stuff -- laughter and all -- on video. The desert's not such a "difficult patrol" that it makes you want to kill people. Something else is going on.
@Whiteflame128

@@damienvalentine5043 since then, many more agents have been added. The good ones are still there, but the recruitment for the added agents has been particularly awful, intentionally appealing to people who delight in hurting people or abusing power. But more recent reports on news exposes and so on suggest that the older agents are not pleased with this in any way. As I said, it's all very complicated, and nothing anyone is doing is making it simpler.

Here in Australia we have a very similarly brutal policy of deterrence through death. We're an island nation - so people that try to reach our shores by boat without authorisation? They just drown. Or we lock them up in offshore centres. Refugees and corpses. We like to keep both out of sight and out of mind. It's revolting.
@HannahFortalezza
@HannahFortalezza 5 лет назад
To be fair, the government didn't make them get in the boats. There were more who died in boat crossings when the policies were weaker. This is not to say there aren't people dying in other places, trying to somehow make their way into the country, I'm just saying there are fewer boat crossing drownings. The policies are not perfect, there are many inhumane things as part of it, however if we were to effectively completely open the borders, the infrastructure couldn't handle such an influx. There would also be huge cultural and socio-economic issues. It's a complex issue the government hasn't got right, but both extremes of the argument are flawed, hence compromises / alternative solutions are probably going to be the only realistic way forward

I lived in El Paso for seven years, and in the early 80s I was an EMT in the eastern county. 60 to 70% of the people could not afford a basic ambulance ride, but we provided them anyway because the objective was to save a human life and not to make a dollar. Perhaps if we stopped thinking of these people as Migrants and started to recognize that they are human beings, perhaps some thinking would change. It is a fact that the average migrant population commits fewer crimes than average Americans. But I digress, Caitlin, this is been another excellent production with a very good message done in a very tasteful way. Brain smooches for you!

Right. Humans are humans. We didn't choose to be born on this side of the border, just as they didn't choose to be Mexican. If they need help bad enough to risk their life, I feel like we should be setting up things to help, not harm them/keep them out. Not only can immigrants NOT get government assistance, but they pay taxes when they work. They're giving more than they're taking. Why not encourage it.

Azazura Azura : what you stated is very true; however there is a white Christian colonialistic mindset that still permeates today. (This is no criticism to any white Christians reading this!) Almost all colonists who arrived in the Americas saw themselves as superior beings, driven and commanded by God, to vanquish or convert the 'heathen savages', save their souls, and then the 'saviors of the lost' could benefit and now own the land/resources/maybe some gold and replace the native culture with their own. Most people don't know their heritage except from family stories and don't see what it matters today in their lives. Fortunately through DNA tests, that is changing. Some, even though they know their ancestry, now see and identify themselves as 'Muricans and that embolds them with a sense of self-righteousness. A sense that seems to be flourishing some today. Unfortunately, living in Arkansas, I see and experience this mindset when I walk out the door. As I overheard in a grocery story recently, "If all these damn ignorant migrants and colored people would get out of our country, we wouldn't have any problems." And there it is. I am German, English, Irish, Redbone (Cajun- Acadian from Nova Scotia + anyone they fell in love with regardless of color, ) Cherokee and Caddo Adai.i am proud of my line, researched it, and like it! Btw two common things enjoyed worldwide came from these southern migrants, chocolate and chewing gum. And for the chocolate especially, they will always have my undying respect!

The same cannot be said about a lot of the native citizens in southern california.

They want their people to go cry to the U.S. president, and not to El Presidente Nieto, or whoever it is now. Mexico is the 15th most prosperous country on the planet. So tired of the "go to America" propaganda!! Mexicans, at a very young age, have it in their heads, to go to America, illegally, of course. These countries are embroiled in conflicts and widespread human rights abuses. - The vast majority of people crossing the sea pass through Libya, where they are exposed to horrific levels of violence, including kidnapping, torture and extortion. People in Libya are also often detained in detention centres, usually in horrendous conditions - and those in detention in Tripoli have been trapped in the ongoing conflict in the city, with some centres having been caught in airstrikes, with people unable to escape, and then killed or injured. - Over 1,100 people died attempting the crossing in 2018; in 2019, people continue to drown. Second, just because they made the choice and put themselves in the situation doesn't mean their deaths shouldn't be acknowledged or that they shouldn't be treated as people instead of as mere corpses that aren't a big deal, just a part of the deterrence strategy.

@@donbeissel2965 Yes, and why do you think they did that? Do you think they would have if there were other options, like before?

Don Beissel It’s not really a choice, is it? Death on one side, death on the other.

The Mexican government is to blame, really. The citizens there live on a few dollars per hour. Mexico is the 15th prosperous country on the planet. So tired of their apathy! They need to reform their minimum wage. It will prevent their citizens from dying while making the trek across that Sonoran Desert just to come to America. Been like this for decades, and will probably never stop.

For the US, it's the desert, for Europe, it's the Mediterranean Sea. The tragedies happening at the borders are probably very similar.

I spent a week in Douglas AZ/Agua Prieta MX in 2016 learning about border policy and how it affects people in Mexico and Central America. The group I was with participated in a vigil for the migrants who died attempting to cross and were never identified, and it's something I think about frequently. There were, as Caitlyn mentioned, many groups on both the US and Mexican side of the border working to help people get resources, and we did a water drop out in the desert.
