VW 1835cc Bus engine - Fire in The Hole! Will it start?!?

In the first video we determined what the static compression was in this air cooled 1835 engine for a friends Volkswagen Bus.
In the second video we corrected the compression ratio and sealed up the top end.
Todays video we're installing the tins that he repainted and will see if the engine will fire up with the rebuilt Dellorto Carbs I did a while back.
1835cc W110 cam 8.3:1 compression
Brazil heads, 40x35mm, high rev springs, solid rocker shaft
Dual Dellorto 36 carbs.

Love that engine control panel. Every time I do a engine start on the stand I tell myself I should make something like that. Then when my test if finished I tell myself I will build one later. "PROCRASTINATION" at it's finest. hehehe Love my Dell's been thinking about trying some of those EMPI "Super D" carbs. Heard some guys complain about the progression holes.

Haha, I hear ya there! I can be pretty good at procrastinating and it drives my wife nuts because I didn’t use to be like that 😂 I do appreciate your videos on the Dells as it helped reassure me when I went through these as I’ve never messed with them before. They definitely have some nice features over the Webers but they are also similar in certain ways.

Sounds good to me. Belt is a little loose. Carbs a little rich, but a awesome staring point.

Belt has been addressed and there’s still some tweaking to do as it could be better but not bad for an initial run.

Cool deal! I have a set of Dellorto 40’s in my car; they are great but unobtanium. The Gene Berg linkage is great and would’ve worked like a charm. Vintage Speed exhausts are killer; I have one in my car as well. Pertronix are also finnicky; the first few models will fry if you leave the ignition key on without running the engine. The newest iteration doesn’t. Also if you reverse the leads they will fry immediately. You need to be extremely cautious in making sure they’re hooked up right the first time.

This was my first set of Dellorto’ sand I have to say I do like them. Haven’t messed with the Berg linkage much but the vintage speed has some nice features over the CSP that I run. I’ve learned my lesson with Pertronix as I’ve burnt up a module before… live and learn! 😂

@@VWJawbreaker could you comment further on the linkage? I currently have a crossbar setup that came with my carbs (44 IDF's). I like the bellcrank style, would love to hear your input on which brand you prefer? It will be in a Baja so it does get dusty/dirty. Do the bellcrank style have bearings that could possibly collect dirt? I'd like a better linkage, just not sure which one.

@@Golden-ui5um the linkage in this engine is the vintage speed which has some nice features. I run the CSP on Jawbreaker and I really like that one as well. Which one is better? I think it’s personal preference. Not sure about bearings and what not being exposed in the Baja, others may be able to answer that better than I could.

Hey Kevin! This vintage speed bell crank linkage is really nice. I run the CSP bell crank linkage on Jawbreaker and love it also. IMO, I won’t have a hex bar style again after having the bell crank style, but that’s just me. They seem to stay put much better and easier to dial in.

How the heck do you adjust the idle mixture screws once it's in the car ? I had to take off the side tar sheets just to have clearance for the carbs. Now trying to figure out how to adjust the. Idle mixture after I get them to sync at a lower idle speed.

This is going into a bus so there’s more room than a bug. In my bug, I cut access holes in the fender well to gain easy access to the mixture screws, idle jets and spark plugs.

Sounds awesome, the linkage is a similar thing to what’s on my bug, that’s running Kadrons. Would love to know what power it is chucking out, the idling sounds great too

Oh nice, hope you like the linkage! I prefer bell cranks over hex bar now thanks to a local friend of mine. No clue what the power is, guess I could look on CB’s site and see what they say… but then they run a different cam and heads so 🤷‍♂️ If I had to guess, I’d say 90-100hp.

Not sure what this ran him, he got the engine elsewhere I just lowered the compression for the his head putting it in. The vintage speed linkage is really nice but so is the CSP linkage that I run. Duals are nice and with either one of those linkages you don’t have to mess with them often. Depending on the engine combo, a single carb is fine, but I’m not a fan of the single IDF setups. There’s others that are better for a single 2 barrel carb.

That always depend on the compression ratio. If you have a higher compression ratio it’s better to be safe and run Premium.

How you set your timing? How many degree at how many rpms? If thats how you do it. Thank you

This engine has the 009 distributor, you can only set the max advance…. Idle timing will fall wherever it will. Max advance is 28-30 degrees at 3k rpm.

@@vwhallucination2647 yes, doesn’t matter if it’s Pertronix or points, what matters is the 009 distributor. Other distributors get timed a different way but you usually always want 28-30 degrees at 3,000 rpm. High performance engines can be different.

I got a Sears inductive timing light that just turning the motor over you can set the initial timing . at 12 ?

@@VWJawbreaker the motor don't have to be running for your timing light to work . with a .009 you set it a 12 while cranking it over . And besides I should have just said - Thats a kick a-s motor.

@@jimmywilkinson9190 that’s a good point, i static timed it to get it close then dialed it in at 3k rpm since that’s how you time a 009. So many ways to accomplish the goal as long as you end up with the finished product being correct 👍
