Thanks Mike, the 58 broke down on the freeway Saturday. Took the top half of the carb off and found no fuel in the bowl. Ordering a rebuild kit for the 36hp fuel pump. Hoping it's just the diaphragm. Great video buddy!
Mike--You are making this way too hard. I just did three 36 hp fuel pumps in less than 2 hours including cleaning. I found you do not have to put both pieces in at the same time in the base. Install the spring and first half of the lever with a punch temporarily holding it in place. I then took a 5/16 X 1 1/4 long bolt and placed the bolt head against the lever and depressed it, I used a small piece of wood and a clamp to hold the lever depressed. Once that is done there is room to snake the other half of the mechanism into the slot of the first piece. As you carefully pull the punch out you work the piece into place and when its in you push the punch back through. Then simply put the pin in and carry on as you have shown. I could send a picture or two if you are interested or have any questions. Or else you can send me the $200 and I will be glad to assemble them for you.
Just did the full rebuild on mine totally stripping the top half too. Don't forget to pre tension the diaphragm otherwise you will cause premature wear to the diaphragm - you either need VW Tool 328b - I used a M8 nut and bolt - bolted through a flat bar - the bolt protruded through 35mm onto the petrol pump pushrod lever and the flat bar clamped to the petrol pump base - you could rig something up using an old pump flange too !
After I took the pin out I watched the video and started to worry a bit. But it only took me about 5 minutes to put it back in. Total time to do job was less than hour from taking it out to reinstalling. I’d say the difficulty of this job is a 3 or 4.
my fuel pump looks exactly like the one pictured on your phone, with the rounded over section on top as opposed to the threaded section on yours. here is my question. where are all the pieces. number 15, 16, 11 and such in between. where do they go?
Hello Mike, this is Andre from Brazil. I'have already assembled many of this 36hp fuel pump. This is a very hard job my friend. I always use two c-clips in that pin. Safety First, nobody wants to do this in the road side. Are you using the Wolfsburg West repair kit? Here in Brazil we just have one supplier, and this is a real crappy. The spring is too hard (It causes Gasoline excess), the pieces are made with a low cost material. The Company brand name is TR. They Export those kits to USA. I have video in my Channel showing the spring problems.
Under an hour to build mine up. And then when the diaphragm gave out of me about hour and half on side of the road but thats having to deal with fuel lines and clean up. I work with weapons every day . Lots of small tricky parts so that probably helps
Wow and that was on a 36 hp pump. they are not like the newer ones. Mine was all apart because the pin fell out so I didnt have a clue how it went back together.
Think of the production numbers VW put out. Obviously it involved special tools and a jig of some sort. To crank them out Day after Day. 40 million cars....
@@Mikefngarage no way you could have done it on side of the Highway . I have an electric Mr. Gasket mini pump that make 3.5 lbs and a VW guy down here saw it and said - well what are you going to do when it quits = the same as you when the Mech. one quits WALK
