I love the way you put the blaster wand through the vacuum hose, instead of buying that tool that some guys have. I'm gonna steal that idea. Thanks.

This video just popped up after so many years. I have a VW CC with a similar engine. At 84.000 miles the warning light came on and we went to the dealership. After a diagnostic a leaking intake manifold. When they started replacing it they informed me it would be wise to have the intake valves cleaned as well. Luckily the manifold was replaced under guarantee. The rest cost us $445 on labor and misc parts. Normally the cleaning needs to be done between 50 - 60k mls. We were lucky under those circumstances as usually a valve cleaning job is around $ 850.

Fantastic video. Most direct injected engines are having this problem but nobody has admitted a procedure to clean them that I am aware of. Years ago we used crushed walnut shells on the Ford Tempo/Topaz but Ford has not approved anything yet for their problem. They have been replacing cylinder heads. They also say that air intake chemicals will overheat the turbo on engines equipped.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 лет назад
wysetech2000 A friend of mine at a VW dealership says they use sodablasting to clean the carbon off. I like the walnut setup I have (was cheap to buy) and as long as no walnut debris is left in the head, all should be good.

I recently started working for a mom and pops shop where I am starting to see more vw and audi...is there a diag chart that you follow to accurately diagnose carbon build up on direct injection engines? Or is the cold start misfire all you need?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 2 года назад
Thanks for the kind words! Cold start misfires is a good indication that carbon might be the issue. I use a borescooe (remove intake temp sensor) to check a couple if valves / to see how bad it might be. If there's no history of carbon cleaning... it needs to be recommended as first step. Also make sure that the pcv has the most recent oil separator on top of the valve cover. My current & old shop were mom & pop. You learn as you go.

so he only cleaned one intake port and not the other 3? :) lol Great video! good stuff. I will add that what should also be done is a oil catch can system needs to be installed on these motors, even though the pcv valve adapter plate is atleast $200, but I've heard and see is well worth it - that is IF it eliminates most of this nasty carbon sludge build up, which i've been told it does. And will save someone several hundred dollars on a job like this (unless you want to do it yourself)

I'd say that engine technology will have to improve before I buy anything like one of these. WAY TOO MANY ISSUES WITH THIS ENGINE. If you are going to buy a TSI powered vehicle, you had better read up on it. Manifold failures, main seal failures, timing chain failures, and valve coking. Come on VW-your reputation is changing fast. Kind of makes me want to get rid of my MK4 TDI.

Jason W I agree to an extent but for example, my 2014 Audi s5 3.0tfsi has 140k. I walnut blasted at 80k and other than that, I've replaced the water pump, thermostat and the motor mounts. Nothing else and it runs the same as the day I bought her with 15 miles. Been more reliable than any Honda or Toyota I've ever bought.

My 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan (134,900 miles) has Misfires and slow response problems. I went to the mechanic like 4 months ago to fix the problem but the same problem came back 2 weeks later. The problems the mechanic fix were the 4 injectors, coil connectors and cleaning the valves I believe.. the final price I paid was 974 dollars for those things to be fixed. Rn I’m low on money so I’m trying to figure out if the problem he fixed was temporary since it wasn’t the main problem or this car is done for good. I been driving with problem for the past 4 months but now it’s hard to drive since the slow response on the camshaft and accelerating is making it hard and unsafe drive in the streets. Also I remember when changing the spark plug I see oil was on the spark plugs and also the ignition coils was never replaced.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 2 года назад
If he only changed the coil connectors, maybe it needs coils this time. Why not go back and have him look at it. It ran fine for 2 weeks, so he obviously knows what he's doing. I don't know why there's so much distrust when going to mechanics. The car is 13 years old, of course it will have problems. Many things can cause misfiring / lack of power. Maybe it's something else this time. Timing chain issues are common. Have the chain & tensioner checked before it fails completely. Are you the first owner, 2nd, 3rd? If you are not happy with it, trade it in for a Honda or Toyota, but then you won't needt to chat with me. =)
@OFFGRIDDAN
@OFFGRIDDAN 2 года назад
@@EXOVCDS I fixed it myself by replacing the ignition coils and spark plugs by watching your videos and some other dude video so thank you but I’m going to keep it for now then sell it eventually since I have another vehicle.. you should know why people have trust issues with mechanics, mechanics are not here to favor people they are here to do their “job” just like everybody else. Main reason why a lot of people try to do themselves instead of having to pay a leg for it to get repaired. Only people who don’t know nothing about cars or don’t have time to repair themselves or get a replacement always trust mechanics to fix their car, people with a brain knows mechanics are not here for them. You can’t be defending this crappy Volkswagen company even how old the car is, majority of their cars are unreliable. Only positive thing about these cars are driving when it’s repaired or how it looks anything else is complete garbage.

Hey Thomas thank u once again. 2 questions I have. How can someone depressurize the fuel system because since the high pressure can hold around up to 3000 psi. Hyuandai I can pull the fuel pump relay out and let it die and then crank until it doesn't want to start no more. Dont know if u mentioned that in the video. 2 is what vacuum are u using for the intake cleaning. I see u have an attachment for ur air hose. Just so I can tell the boss to buy this immediately. These gdi systems are pretty tricky and these valves on start tends to misfire bad when carbon builds around them. Thank u god bless
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 6 лет назад
Disconnect the fuel metering solenoid on top of the high pressure pump. Run the engine for 10 / 20 seconds (will set a fault code for that solenoid, no big deal). High pressure will be gone... only low pressure will remain. Open any fuel fittings slowly... place a rag around / under fittings to catch the small amount of fuel that will drip out. A regular sized "Shop-Vac" with a Silicone hose attached to the front of the shop-vac hose. The silicone hose has a hole in it so that I can put my walnut blaster rod through it. The silicone hose needs to be big enough to cover the intake port of the head. Thank you for watching!

Hi Thomas EXOVCDS, when you clean the valve using the vacuum pump and compressed air, you mentioned that you need to make sure the engine is at TDC (i.e. the valves are closed), I am assuming you meant foe each piston valves. How do you make sure it's at TDC? At TDC are all the valves closed? I am planning to do this but am concern about large pieces of carbon getting lodged inside the valve. Thanks.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
Yes... each cylinder has to have the valves closed (intake valves). You can see them when the intake is off... then you just have to rotate the engine when you want to to the next cylinder.
@petikan
@petikan 7 лет назад
Hi Thomas, thanks for the info. I was watching another video and it mentioned cranking the engine just a split second to close the valve. My next question is how would you know if the valves are fully closed? Is it possible the valve is slightly opened? Like a hairline gap? Thanks.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
Bumping the starter to get a cylinder to the compression stroke, can help confirm that the valves are closed (can't build compression when valves are open). Turning the engine by hand (clockwise) can tell you when you are on the compression stroke and it will allow you to see the valves opening & closing (while someone turns the engine by hand). If you go past TDC, the valves will still be closed for the power stroke and some of the exhaust stroke.... so the valves actually stay closed for quite a while.
@petikan

Hi Thomas EXOVCDS , that's good to know. Thank you very much for your help.

Did they never floor their car? Why would this happen on such a new car? Hi miles, or just plain design failure? Tnks for the vid :)
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 лет назад
142k km's... no injectors in front of the valves for gasoline to wash them clean with every intake stroke. PCV fumes are the only fumes to go past the valves... after the power & exhaust stroke, valve overlap pushes a bit of hot exhaust back into the intake and the Pcv fumes get baked into place.

***** We have the BG line of products where I work. They help if done regularly, but quite honestly every intake I pull looks disgusting from the 2.0t to the 5.0v10's. Cleaning by removing the intake is a great way but kind of hard because no set labor rate. Plus I worry sometimes the chance of a flap or the shaft that controls the flap messing up or vac leak afterwards might then cost us an intake manifold. But sometimes it needs to be done. Great video by the way!

Thank you for uploading the video! I have a 2012 Tiguan with mileage almost 80k and the engine light is on. VW dealer told me to do a intake decarb with a quotation of almost $1000. Should I do it or I can go to any auto repair for a lower price?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 6 лет назад
Lower price isn't always better... there are many seals that need to be replaced when removing the intake. Lots of shops will not know what they need to replace, and the price will all of a sudden be higher than the initial quote. Many shops do not have the walnut (or soda) blasting equipment... so they end up doing a mechanical cleaning (hand picks & chemicals) , which takes longer than a media blasting setup. If you are a regular / current dealer customer, stick with them, so all the work history is with them. If things go wrong down the road, you know that it has been dealer serviced... and they can't claim fault due to unauthorized repair facility. But a competent Euro Specialty Repair Shop should have no problems cleaning the intake ports for you.

If you have questions about something, ask them. For the most part... remove what you have to remove, in order to remove what you want to remove. This video should still give you a general idea of what I am doing. You can "refer" to your own engine (look at it) to make sense of things... again, ask questions if you have them. Making a mistake during this kind of cleaning (big carbon pieces falling past a valve) can cause engine damage. You need to assess if you can handle such a repair. Thank you for watching!

Sorry about the late reply... I have not yet done one on a new 1.8T If the engine does not have an "extra" injector (some new direct injected engines have one) that sprays fuel ahead of the intake valve (to help reduce carbon build-up), then the only way to clean the carbon is to remove the intake manifold and use some kind of media blaster or manually scrape the carbon off.

Thomas EXOVCDS has Erwin manuals updated their repair manuals yet? how detailed are their repair manuals?

Sorry it took so long... erWin website had technical issues that tech support did not believe. Here's the drain & fill portion of the service manual: fkh161.ca/VW/CoolingDrainFill.pdf

Thomas, where did you get that intake port for walnut blasting? =))

No special tool... just some silicone hose. Which part in the video? Time?

Where did you get it?

Heavy duty truck repair shop... they cut a piece off of bulk intercooler hose. You can probably find it at a local Hose Shop similar to this one: (if you don't have a Truck Service Shop near by) www.greenlinehose.com/

Why they got carbon deposit tho?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
The injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion cylinder... on older engines, the fuel is sprayed in front of the intake valve. The fuel cleans / washes the valve head as it passes the head. Direct injection doesn't do that. Manufacturers are now adding injectors in front of the valves on newer Direct Injected Engines to help keep the valves clean.

cool I just got my throttle body and intake manifold cleaned. So expensive... I got a leaking gasket too...

Great vid bro! What was used to cover the the other ports? Was that plastic? And roughly how long did the whole job take?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 лет назад
Duct tape across the cylinder head port openings... cardboard under the port openings and tissue in the injector ports. This was my first time, so I took it slow... the blasting took maybe 1/2hr (again, I took my time). There's no set labor rate for something like this (as far as I know)... so the more that someone does this, the faster & cheaper they will be. The video was edited (took out the walking back & forth between toolbox & car, lifting & lowering the car)... but for the most part it is still "time wise "correct (insert your guestimated time here).

What were the plastic pieces you removed from the intake ports? What's their function and what happens if they're left out? Curious
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 9 лет назад
Those are air deflectors that work in conjuction with the flaps in the intake... variable intake manifold of sorts.

César Scheid The but at the top is a 13mm hex nut. The bolt at the bottom is an M10 Multi Spline (I think). Looks like this: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31YPWBjFImL._SL500_AC_SS350_.jpg

+César Scheid If you buy a Multi Spline / Triple Square set... it will most likely contain the size you need. I'll check at work tomorrow to see if I can find the exact size. It's either M10 or M12

my uncle has a 2009 2.0t tiguan with 60k miles. I noticed he has a small oil leak coming from his valve gasket cover. the part is $5 for a new gasket. is it a DIY job? if so how long would it take?? did you make any videos on it?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
The "valve cover" does not have a gasket... VW uses just a sealant. There is a plastic PCV assembly that does have a gasket... unbolt and replace gasket. The front upper chain cover also has a gasket... more involved, don't have a video for that either... yet. =)
@anthonyvaladez6097
@anthonyvaladez6097 7 лет назад
Thomas EXOVCDS so replacing those seals would fix his small leak? is it a easy DIY I have all the tools just learning how to do more on repairs
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
The top plastic pcv assembly should be easy / straight forward... the upper chain cover is more involved, have to remove passenger engine mount.
@anthonyvaladez6097

Thomas EXOVCDS do the Erwin manuals explain how to do it in detail ?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
Sorry about the late reply... The erwin manuals assume that the person reading it has some kind of automotive experience. Certain things are explained step by step... while other things are just shown in "exploded view" diagram format, with torque specs for assembly. Even if you don't end up doing the work yourself... $35 for a bunch of service manuals is well worth the cost. You can read-up on what is involved and have a better understanding about how stuff works. =)
