It's because European manufacturers see EVs as premium whereas Chinese manufacturers see them as normal.

Yes but mainly because the Europeans started EV development 10 years after the Chinese, so are having to buy in the technology and batteries at hugely inflated prices and its older technology, only TESLA is at similar pace to Chinese as they started development at a similar time. China already selling 800V EV tech with much bigger range and much faster charging , that and lets not forget the VW group have massive multi billion court settlements due to Diesel gate..

No it’s because the CEO’s want to keep their profits and share prices high in the short term. Switching to EV’s will cost them money in the short term and are not as profitable (as they don’t need as much servicing) long term.

@@jasonmugridge and that's what CEOs are for right, short-term thinking? Do you consider VAGs mounting $200bn debt as preserving 'profits'? What's the profit on non-sales? I guess until they can make EVs profitably, like Tesla & BYD, they should step aside/out.

@@martinaston1715 in some cases they're having to get Geely to manufacture the whole vehicle. My point is, their products are largely high-end with no commitment to normalising EVs. It's as if they think EVs are a fad and will 'all blow over'.

The Nokia and Blackberry examples obviously come to mind when we see the auto companies not facing up to reality. You also rightly (and hilariously) reminded us of how Kodak, who, don’t forget, pioneered digital photography, were unable to manage technological change. Just as Kodak was essentially a film photography company, regardless of how they saw themselves, so many of these car companies are essentially internal-combustion-engine auto manufacturers. BMW, Porsche, and Ferrari seem to struggle with the idea that their cars won't be able to make loud vroom vroom sounds anymore. In the 1980s I cheered for the Japanese car makers, now I cheer for the Chinese - go get ’em!

@alex.velasco Come down to earth, China also struggles to sell EV nodays... Here two problems: 1. In US, you just cannot charge EV unless you live in private house or upscale apartments. EV is ok as a second car, but that again implies private house. 2. The charging time and range both boils down to batteries. Do you really want to buy a $50K-60K car today with 250mi range and 80%/45min charge today, if everybody promises 350+mi range and 80%/20min charge in 3-5 yrs? The strange thing is that they seem to be getting things right now. I spoke to a new id7 driver who got out of an Id4 previously, he is delighted with his new purchase, none of the issues he had with his older car, which he has passed to his wife, he wants to get her a new ID4 as they have improved its efficiency. I must admit, I’d hate to see them disappear, I have owned 7 or 8 of them and must say they were great cars, always better than their competition.

There is record-breaking heat hitting the US. The Guardian says the heatwave “is now moving east into the midwest and south-east, as millions of Americans have been under a heat alert at some point in the past week”. It notes that more than 255 million Americans “are expected to experience 92F [33C] temperatures between Sunday and Wednesday this week, with at least 30 million to experience temperatures of 101F [39C] or higher”. The New York Times reports that “burns from scorching-hot sidewalks and roads are rising, and can be fatal”. The Associated Press says that “a dangerously hot summer is shaping up in the US west, with heat suspected in dozens of recent deaths”. And the Washington Post reports that “high outdoor temperatures, rising climate costs and humidity are all contributing to higher air-conditioning bills”. A new review study on urban heat exposure finds that a 1C rise in temperature is linked to a 2.1% rise in “disease-related mortality” and a 1.1% rise in “morbidity”. The authors identified 188 studies about the impact of warm weather on health in urban settings, and carried out a “meta analysis” to collate their results. The study finds that “China's urban population faced an elevated mortality risk compared to other countries”. The authors conclude that “widespread exposure to high temperatures amplifies health risks across various diseases, demographics, climates, and countries, with potential exacerbation under ongoing global warming”.

Quite frankly, the situation for VAG is nowhere near as bad as it could be. Right now, China has chosen not to retaliate against EU-produced automobile imports. If China wanted to really punish the EU, they would slap a prohibitively large (say, 100%) carbon tax on ALL automobile imports in addition to a comparable 30% tariff on EV imports. Right now, Porsche is a huge profit center for VAG, but produces ZERO cars in China, so every Porsche sold in China is imported from Germany - it's a huge 'overcapacity' situation where Porsche is 'dumping' cars in China. Similar issues exist with various higher-end, higher-margin Audi (also BMW and Mercedes) vehicles. If China squeezes those profitable cars, they can squeeze German auto industry revenue and profit much harder. This would ripple down to the German suppliers like ZF and Bosch, along with tertiary effects throughout the economy. Those debts would put VAG, BMW, and others into bankruptcy risk that the German state would have to bail out to prevent collapse and massive unemployment. That is, the VAG crisis is far larger than VAG, and extends to the entire German auto industry. China could push Germany into a sustained economic recession (potentially depression) that lasts for multiple years, and permanently destroy the German automobile competition. Fortunately for Germany, China isn't as cold-blooded as America. Although, if the EU persists with tariffs on Chinese EVs, China should eventually do so and force the EU into an Australia situation, where they are forced to open up to Chinese imports because they can no longer produce cars domestically. Fortunately for China's government, the Chinese consumer is already making the shift due to Chinese EV competitiveness, so this is happening organically without China having to employ any heavy-handed policy tools.

The Belgium factory had been on it's last legs for years, it became too expensive to operate as it has "long-standing structural issues" - located in the middle of a large urban area, relatively small production line that could not be expanded, high haulage costs to the site, very high salary area within Europe. VW decided to give the place an bit of extra operating time by placing Audi's EV manufacturing there so it didn't impact production at their other sites and to learn lessons with the EV production line setup. Having done that, and also having produced an EV product that dosn't seem that attractive to the market, the factory closure is back on the cards. Some press quaters are reporting this as an EV issue, but ignoring the site has been a problem for VW for years.

I was looking t buying a used ID3 but the sales staff were very uninterested in selling one and the deal breaker was they only wanted to give me a 1 year guarantee - Just one year from the company that charges 3 grand for an aircon compressor and produces more lemons than a Spanish farmer. Looks like it will be Toyota, Kia or Hyundai for me. Auf Wiedersehen VW

Audi will be fine in China. Audi's biggest problem has been a stagnant product lineup, which they are overhauling aggressively over the next 2 to 3 years. Fears about Audi not catching up with startups in China on EVs are a bit overblown, as Chinese consumers with money gravitate towards foreign brands. Having been in China for 2 weeks I can assure everyone, if someone has money in China they will drive a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Land Rover, or Porsche. This desire for luxury and quality won't disappear. Instead as the Chinese economy is not doing so well from the housing crisis, Audi and other automakers will have to adapt, and you will see this happen. Furthermore we should not forget that Audi will be starting a F1 team soon and if they sign Zhou Guanyu as a reserve driver, which is expected to happen, it will resonate well with Chinese consumers. If they sign him as a driver, which is not expected, that'll do more to help Audi, but honestly given his lack of performance that should not be expected. There will most probably be many brand collabs between Zhou and Audi in the future, among many other initiatives by the Volkswagen Group.

I think you are right. Even in the European and US market, people are still buying through brand recognition inertia. Roll on 10 years from now, when the Chinese brands have overcome the new entrant issues and VW will be an also run (and probably bankrupt by then, given their leverage). Simple examples here to quote: BYD has become a recognised brand name in the UK and selling like hotcakes, in the small and in the sedan segments. Based on levels of quality vs cost. Yes, the s/w needs further improvement, but that is only a matter of time.

VW is dying slowly - ID 3 & 4 are heavy and inefficient hence the poor sales. VW buying an old Chinese platform and trying to source cars being made in China - desperate companies make desperate decisions. I've owned a VW before and long term ownership is not recommended as repairs is excessively expensive and I don't trust the brand.

The price of second hand EVs is falling - plummeting would be a better word. Batteries that wear out. Lithium fires that destroy ships and car parks. And better batteries just around the corner. I'd guess that VW and Mercedes have some pretty solid market data that informs their decisions. VW were always on borrowed time selling into China so that's a separate issue.

It's surely much more difficult to be an car manufacturer nowadays, since the market are more spread and unstable then ever. Now there's more than two main markets (Europe and North America) they need to predict the development of, when starting the development of new models 2-3 years before launch. Some on the brands are now panicking, because the switch to EVs ain't happening nearly as fast as expected and a lot of buyers ask for different cars then what they had predicted.
