Great Video. Car was loosing coolant for about 3 months and couldn’t pin point the location. Was finally able to hear the leak. Searched and found you video. Only extra I used was a flexible long funnel by the oil filter to catch the coolant from major spill. Secondary Air Pipe Elbow by Turbo was brittle and cracked after movement. Took about an hour (help from vid) to remove. Waiting on mailman for replacement part. 👍🏼

I have tried to watch your videos many times in the past,but just couldn't... It wasn't so much for the constant movement,but the lack of sound and not hearing any explanation. This is MUCH BETTER! Thumbs up and subscribed,especially since I sometimes work on European cars too! Keep up the good work! 👍

I've changed / adapted for my viewers... you can't expect someone to make "Top Notch Videos" while they are "at work". I don't always talk... but I think I provide enough info (be it text or verbal info) to help the viewer. I have several subscribers who are deaf... they haven't had any issues since my channel started. I'm a visual learner myself... that's why I record in First Person View format, which in my mind makes learning how to do a job a lot easier. I reply to any and all questions / posts... not too many channels do that these days and I've been doing that since day one. Nice to see you onboard .

Thomas EXOVCDS I certainly wouldn't be entitled to expect anything since I know how hard it is working on these cars as it is,let alone filming it while working in a shop environment. Sorry... I have a constant need to explain the reason behind my recording style (for the benefit of potential new subscribers who are reading comments). No offence taken (sorry if that's what it came across as)... just felt that things need to be explained since my average view duration is under 3 minutes (because people don't give me a chance or they don't bother asking me questions)... but people like to read comments (weird). =)

VW and Audi seems to have plastic clips and metal brackets that are designed to cut you up. I've done most jobs on Vw Passat and Audi A4. When I replaced the head gasket on A4 the coolant flange was removed and checked while the head was off, much easier. I had to change the Passat one though :( Good work Thomas.

I did this job this weekend. One word of advice is to replace the o - ring that is between the metal coolant pipe and the flange. It leaked until I put a new 0 - ring. This job is difficult. If you don't tighten the two bolts that hold the flange to the cylinder head enough it will leak, fit you tighten too much you run the risk of striping the threads. Is there a torque wench small enough to be used in such a tight space?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 2 года назад
Thanks for the DIY feedback! Yes, always replace o-rings, seals, gaskets etc. Those who "turn wrenches for a living" develop a feel for how tight something is, no matter using a wrench, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2" ratchets etc. Taking into account the size / thickness of a fastener one can usually gauge the amount of torque that is required / should be applied. 6mm studs are usually 10nm... a service manual should list actual specs.

@@EXOVCDS took it back to the shop and they said it’s fuel injector seal leaking, causing fuel smell in the car. $180 (in Canada) to fix it and they said they would put charcoal cabin filter ($40 cost) and wash/clean the engine($60 cost) to clean residue. Strange why I noticed the smell right after coolant flange replacement. They said this issue has no connection with coolant flange replacement work.

One time what I did is unbolt the front portion of the subframe so that the hole engine sits lower and farther from the fire wall especially if you have to replace all the pcv system and other cooling system parts like coolant temp sensor is a good idea. Unrelated to this video the other day I did a timing adjuster gasket set without removing the exhaust cam from the head I just realease all the cam bearing and the timing belt was still on the pulley I think I was the first time I did it like that it worked well I know in one video U mentioned that you never tried it that way but maybe you did after all.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 лет назад
I've seen images of someone having done that... very clever and gutsy at the same time. I'll be trying that the next time a chain needs to be replaced... removing just the intake cam works well for just the gasket & tensioner.

I’m changing mine right now and I’m all these videos no one mentions the gasket inside the heater core hose. Oh yeah. A total of 4 gaskets not 2 or 3
@EXOVCDS

This is why I don't go into specifics with my videos. People need to be responsible for their own parts sourcing... it's never a good idea to just rely on generic videos. Leaking where... there are 4 places on the flange where coolant could leak. - where the flange meets the head - where the temperature sensor sits - where the heater core hose attaches - where the bypass pipe attaches. I have to do plumbing on three of them. One of them that lower coolant pipe that goes into the engine, has a rubber stopper mid pipe, with a mid screw locking it to the engine and then splits at the end to feed I think the heater box and go off somewhere up top. I managed everything except that plastic connector that has the grooved fitting and the pull up spring lock. I sprayed the spring lock and pulled it up, it came off, popped off. It seems like this end of the metal pipe is stuck in there. Any ideas? should I replace that hose and the metal pipe together? When I ran the engine on this one, I smelled a burning plastic smell. I was thinking it was this pipe because it looked like someone epoxied it with some grey gunk that might not be made for that kind of heat. The pipe is 17 bucks new, I'm not sure about the hose and connector that feeds out of it.

Can you send me pictures of what / where the part is? I only know of the rear coolant flange and how it attaches to the metal pipe that goes to the top radiator hose. send images to fkh161@fkh161.ca

is it possible to remove flange without removing combi valve ?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 6 лет назад
The more room, the better.... so I would remove the combi valve. You can try to replace the flange with the valve in place, if you want to.

I tried, FAILED miserably, the Turbo Oil line was also on top of the screw that binds the Flange and Oil line to the Block, 2003 VW Passat 1.8T. just FYI for everybody, thanks for your videos on PAssats dude, you are the only one out there!!!

@@EXOVCDS 2 days in and it's holding up... I was losing about a litre of coolant every day before. I'm not trusting it with long journeys though!

I'm pretty late on the comment but my God am I not looking forward to this.. looks like an absolute nightmare. AND I have to replace the oil pan because I've got a hole the size of a penny.

It's not too bad, even though I said pain in the... it's the editing that I didn't look forward to. The oil pan will be a tougher job... be sure to raise & support the vehicle correctly. I drop the subframe... some have success by raising the engine.
