Here is an update on the Gooseneck Trailer. This video shows the roof hitch and detailed interior shots. Enjoy. JCru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mqr2ioQTV5s.html

I seen one that had a hitch on top of the bug that had an attachment point toward the front of the door and a second at the back of the door the guy selling it said it was made to spread the weight out along the rail it didn't bolt through the roof of the car only to the drip rails. I had a 68 bug and he put the hitch on it in about 30mins. I lived in Huntington Beach Calif. At the time. And boy is hind site 2020 i should have bought it. It was feb of 74 i had just gotten out of the military and bought the bug.

How were these trailers not more popular? The maneuverability of something like that and its convenience makes me want one. All you really need is a car of similar size, bit more horsepower, and a strong roof mount.

being someone who drives trailers for recreational purposes this is literally the coolest thing ever and something im shocked never caught on. its pretty awesome how you cant jack knife your trailer backing up. even more convenient you can back up the trailer while driving your car forward, so you can clearly see the trailer tires instead of struggling to see where they are through a rear view mirror which would be incredibly handy for tight parking spots like the trailer pad on the side of my house, which was the side of the house on one side and a retaining wall on the other with a steep incline so last winter i busted the tail light on the retaining wall trying to get it into that tight spot looking in my mirrors not really seeing exactly where the trailer is

Always loved the idea of a 5th wheel camper for a car. Wouldn't be terribly difficult to make one from scratch! I recently bought a Toyota Hilux based RV from the mid 80's, and stripped it down to the aluminum frame and rebuilt it. Pretty straight forward stuff! Would be awesome to make one like this some day

I remember these. I was 10 years old when this concept came out and I thought it was genius. I tried to convince my dad that it would be perfect for weekend camping and fishing trips. He said that he would not be caught dead driving a bug! He said if they make one to fit a Crown Victoria he might consider it? I said. What about a Porsche? He just looked at me funny and said. No! Turns out my grandfather's fought in World War 2 and he just didn't like German cars! But I loved the concept of a fuel efficient affordable camper system. And the maneuverability is unmatched by anything else made even today! Awesome find dude. Now just get a bug and take the family and head off to Disneyland!

I was all of 9 in '74 but my folks were the kinds that liked to go to look at camp trailers and I've seen one of these in the flesh. Of course we didn't have a VW (we had a Corvair) so it wasn't even a consideration but they did indeed get produced. Most likely in very small numbers as everyone considered them a gimmick since VW's were, by and large, pretty gutless and using one to tow a trailer into the mountains to go camping would've been an exercise in futility if not downright dangerous on a road with a big downhill grade. Congrats on your find!

I actually worked at International Travel Trailer, Inc in 1974. I don't recall how many units we built that year, but it was a production line operation. The Vice President of Mfg., and General Mgr, Joe Bostian is the young man seen driving the Yellow V W in the Video. The Front-Roof-Rear-& Floor were all part of a 2-part fiberglass mold, with foam injected for strength. I don't know what happened the company..........

I don't know how popular the Beetle was in America, but this accesorie must surely be something that's more easily found in Europe is my thought. Scandinavians, germans, dutch, and so on love caravans/trailers and was more popular back in the days in Europe than RV's/campervans was in America.

The beetle was mostly used by women in america and men slowly over decades started to drive them. The German bugs were better, the American iced versions were too bubbly and cute for men use.

This is the coolest trailer I've ever seen. Does the roof hitch actually work and is safe? Badass!!!

Wonder why they're never seen anymore? Bet they were made for zipping around the driveway as long as it was flat.

In the early 70's there was one of these features as a prize on "let's make a deal". It was shown attached to an early '70's 4door Impala also. Very cool & unique!

how did a top mount trailer never take off? this is genius, especially with how turning and position work out. you could do this with any sedan.

@@212caboose if you think about it, having a top hitch that is anchored at 4 points on the frame is so much safer than a hitch anchored at 2 points, at best.

Bugs were really low in the power department, if I remember correctly you were only supposed to tow these up a hill going backwards because the bug only had enough torque to do it in reverse gear
