Agree with everyone else....would LOVE to see you do the restoration on this one. Will make great video's too ;) I believe many of us can relate (and LOVE) this VW bus.
Just loving this project!!!! This vehicle doesn’t know how lucky it is to be saved and resurrected by you! On that note I saved viewing this for Easter That motor has no computers or sensors it’s a basic Mechanical Marvel you could keep running on homemade hooch, if needed for the apocalypse!!!!!
This is a restoration I would love to watch! Do you what you need to, but my vote is watching you restore this one and take Melissa and the kids on a weekend trip in it!
Alex your VISION has always been brilliantly inspiring. I would never have guessed the beauty you brought out in this ole girl just in one video is outstanding. 😯 🤯 ❣🏆
Just love it! Our Family of 5 bought a VW bus in 1965 with split front seats. It is grey and white! Now has an 18'' wheel base (the side doors would fly open as it hit a bump so it was cut out and welded back together) and has been tagged in GA and not IN for last 20 years. The Bus that took us coast to coast in US, Canada,Mexico, across the ocean via Queen Mary from England to Sicily at full size was given to the closest thing to a brother. Thank you Covid crap the return trip had to be postponed.
I am having flashbacks! I used to ride in one of those for Girl Scout trips! It used to go up the mountain roads slow, but it always made it! Thanks for some happy memories!’
Alex, my first car was a new VW Beetle and yes I scraped the INSIDE of the windows in the winter. Brings am memories! I love the savanna beige VW with black interior! So many memories! Wish I still had her today!
I didn’t expect you would dive in and do so much to the Vdub this quick! Just the cleanup alone made it look like it has possibilities! I do hope you get it to showroom readiness as soon as time allow, because this would be such a fun series to watch!
My dream vehicle! I drove air cooled veedubs for many years, and sold them off way too soon. The '61 and earlier type II is the holy grail (for me). Glad you took this one home!
Nostalgic, love it! My parents took a VW bus like this one, for camping in summer holidays. My older brother, my younger sister and me: we all lived in it with 5 persons. I temember my father sleeepwith his feet out of the bus, for more space.
My brother used to have a 60s VW that he would drive me to elementary school in. Funny to think that I’m the early 90s, it was just a cruddy car he could afford as young person! (Mustie1 is great! I love his odd mechanical antique rescues!)
Such a shame that so many vehicles are left to rust away, when they could be brought back to life by someone with the passion and skill to restore them. A magic bus, for sure!
The shame is when the owner would rather it rot in a field than to sell it to someone that will appreciate it. I found a 1 owner bus once that was rotting away, and when I talked to the owner, she said she was going to convert it into a olayhouse for her kids. In the end I think it was hauled away because the town didn't allow junk piles sitting in peoples' yards. What a shame she wouldn't sell it to me.
I feel the same way. Them old cars have so much personality and charm compared to today's vehicles 😔! It would be something to have vehicle companies make cars that look vintage, but has all the bells & whistles of today's cars at the very least. And if only a limited amount of them.
@@TheMeloettaful They are doing that. lol Dodge Charger, for one. Nope, still missing the old charm. We'll never go back to those times, unfortunately.
I'm so glad to hear you give Mustie1 a shoutout. I love his videos, and he definitely knows his way around an old VW Looks like you've got yourself a fine example there. A little rusty but definitely worth reviving.
I wouldn’t blame you for flipping it. Though, as someone mentioned, a crossover project with Strong’s Garage, just to get it mechanically fit, would be cool, so we can see how it turns out.
Yeah but Alex enjoys doing these things himself. Yeah he parts jobs out but he enjoys doing what he can or has time for. And I for one enjoy watching him. It might take longer but I don't care, I love watching the process.
I agree. My guess is he’ll be building a new stand alone 6 car garage and garden shed building out in the back 40 next spring!!!! Lol DP will definitely be back to “Archibald Acres”!!!
Wow! I very shocked at how a little clean out plus the addition of the seats. Big difference. But, this is a huge project and a huge expense. I was married to a man that restored vehicle after vehicle. He worked 60-70 hours per week. The rest of that time..he restored old vehicles beautifully! Where we disagreed was the ongoing great expense of replacing car parts. So, consider carefully. Thanks Alex...it is a beautiful piece of history!
Alexander, the stuff under the “icebox” looks like perlite. They have put it there to help insulate it. A mouse may have been living there, but I think the “nest” was always there..
Of course you’re likely correct! I’m laughing at myself because my only thought was, “Wonder where on earth that mouse found all that perlite and how she got it all in there without leaving a mess everywhere else?” 😂😂
Looks better already with those pieces ripped off. Good thing about April snow, it won't last very long. Alex, you have plenty of work to keep you busy.
@@SailorAllan 🤷🏼♀️ And I think it’s a beautiful car! Just because it’s not something you’re interested in doesn’t negate its value. But I don’t want to watch anyone restore either of them. I’d like for them to be restored, yes, but I have no interest in watching the process. And that doesn’t make it a bad idea just because it’s not my personal taste. See what I mean? It’s Alex’s life and Alex’s channel and he’s free to do what he likes with both. And each of us is free to do what we like as well.
My god Alex! What a beautiful bus! If you want my two cents, rust-restore it, keep the patina but fix the rust and get it mechanically sound. Then put the original benches back in there. I wouldn’t wanna camperize it if it’s got all the og Transporter interior and it’s as nice as the way it is! The interior itself is I’m sure worth what you payed for the whole thing! I think once it’s all done it’ll be a great grocery getter/family vehicle for you guys! It’d fit 8-9 with all the original seats! Never sell it! (Unless to me, lol) I’m so excited to see its future!
I personally like these videos from you Alex. So happy that you will keep doing what you love and get out of the store. Great choice for you and your family.
Ohhh myyyy Goshhh, so yesterday after watching your video I literally saw a VW van like your with the separated windshield too but Coloradan mountain man lifted it and put huge tires and side step ups to it, racks on top and yes, he lives in it but it’s sooo creative and cool looking. Thought I’d share. 🥰👍🏻
Dear Mr. Archbold 👍👌👏 Well done (video and work). I absolutely love Mustie1! But he lives a bit far away from you. However, there is a possible solution nearby: I bet that Jim from Strong's Garage could help you with this VW (getting the engine running and the brakes free would definitely be a game changer!) He owns a split window bus too plus 2 bugs (I've seen those in several CWM videos). Maybe he could even lent or sell you tires/rims? Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Dear @@defaultuser1447 👍👌👏 Yeah, I guess the famous single cab is coming home. Is it really already one year ago that Mustie1 lend Crusty to a museum? Best regards, luck and health.
@@Chr.U.Cas1622 Getting there. I looked up the video that had everyone panicking, and he put it out in June last year. I don't know how long before that he dropped it off.
I see it as a GEM in the rough!Family friends owned one similar. When you showed the folding seat it brought back memories of us kids getting in the very back seat. It was the best spot!
Am quite surprised the front floor is in such solid shape. Having all the seats, and in good condition, really add to the value of this 1961 VW Type 2 passenger van. Will take a lot of effort to restore, but is very doable ... Whether your re$tore or $ell = great value ! Slainte' ! Cheers !
Hog heaven ! It looks 10yrs younger And the makeover has just begun . hours and hours of daydreams left in the old girl 👰 sparking joy across the world .
Ha! 😂 Alex, when you opened the engine compartment…our lawnmower has a bigger engine, oh my! I guess I’ve forgotten how woefully underpowered they were.
That bus is miles better than the ones I have seen people restore where every panel ends up replaced. New roof and new floors and outriggers would be most of the job done!.
Those louvers on the back end of the van it's for heat to come out not enter you made it look a hundred times nicer by taking those off so it's pushing out air but then it's trying to push an arrow at the same time but I don't that don't make no sense that was a big improvement I'm happy you did that that made my day
We had that same carpet in our kitchen in the 1970's. You've got yourself an awesome project right there and will be looking forward to more videos. :-)
That’s just how long it was in the field. I think, if memory serves, it’s about 10-12 years older than that! But I agree with you! It doesn’t look too bad!
Now that looks like a very good project. It is not in the bad of shape. The seats are decent and don't require a lot to fix them up just a bit of stitching to get them back together and cleaning. I am surprised how good the floor is throughout the bus. I think the biggest challenge will be the undercarriage but I am sure if you can't find some of the support brackets someone can make them. Hope you restore this would love to see it finished.
He has said that they aren't allowed to put anything in tge garage until the construction is complete and they have taken possession of their new home.
I would take my driver's license just to have a buss like that to roll up to my summer cabin with my dogs! The dream! With seat covers of course haha :)
The show American Pickers look at motorcycles, car and other things. Mike Wolfe has forever been looking for a VW bus like yours. He’d be so jealous and happy for you too. Congratulations on such a great find.
This is going to be a great project! I have wanted an older bus like that since I was seeing them at Grateful Dead concerts back in the eighties! I can't wait to see this thing when it's finished.
I’m so jealous. My preschool/kindergarten teacher Mary Callaham had a powder blue with a white top VW bus she named Maryham. VW buses have a special place in my heart.
You know what I love about you Alex, you are always so positive.Good for you, please stay that way!🙏🏻🥰 I am so looking forward seeing the Volkswagen “revive” ,love that word..😄I was born in 1956 and everybody had a Volkswagen, when I grew up.😁
