Note: Long side of the shift plate should be on the vehicle right side, not the left side as stated in the video!
Part 7 of the restoration of our 1973 walk through bay window named Lily. This video is a quick but detailed step by step on replacing the front shift rod bushing. Late bay windows have a larger and arguably simpler front end to their shift rod and bushing. I had not seen a video showing how to change the bushing for an early bay window, or a video explaining the difference, so here we are.

@@SundryTalesOfConstance79WESTY always appreciate it. The difference is why it took me so long to get to this quick fix. All the other bushing videos have been with late bays, and I was confused on why my shift rod was so different. Finally figured it out 😅

It’s pretty straight forward. There’s other ones further back on the shift rod that are a bit more involved, and I still need to to that (once I figure out how 😅). I believe your early bay should have the same style as mine. Must other videos I have all seen are late bay (not counting 73) and have a different bushing style.

@@callalilycollective I’ve been working on the brakes and it looked the same to me. I’ll check later. It’s 19 degrees out so working on the bus is done for today. Where did you by the bushing? And will any grease work? Thanks so much!

@@Johnhasabus think I just got it from either jbugs or one of the many other VW retailers. You can buy all the bushings in a set on Amazon but it’s over priced, and you’ll only need 2/6 it comes with. Make sure you change you fuel lines asap if you haven’t since getting the bus. Also recommend the blaze cut system for engine fire protection. I would do this prior to doing the shift bushings.

Hey i was just taking my scat shifter out and noticed that ball on the shifter that goes down into socket , had no little rod on it. I was trying to see whats the issue when i lost all my gears at once but now i feel like thats why i have to get new shifter assembly because it definetelly has to do with it.

Sounds like that would do it. Without that pin you really are only controlling forward/aft position. Need that pin to control the roll. Fingers crossed that’s all you need 🤞

At the 3:11 mark you show your shifter plate has the longer flange on left. Not sure about buses, but for beetles the longer flange is ALWAYS on the passenger side. Vw would never have them different ways for different models. Are you sure your shifter plate orientation is correct?

I am not sure, and doing further investigation now. I don’t know how many previous owners there were, but there has been a lot of questionable things I’ve found on this bus so far and I just put the plate back the same way I found it. This might explain part of the difficulty in finding reverse. I’ve found two threads on thesamba that confirm what you’re saying, but also a photo that appears from an old VW manual that looks like the long tab could be on the left. Appreciate the help! Once I confirm the orientation I’ll add a text card into the video so others don’t make that mistake.

@bertsparrow thank you so much, you are correct, the long flange should be on the right side! Added a note in the video at 3:05 to hopefully not misguide anyone else, and updated the video description with more details. Amazing how much easier it is to shift into reverse now 🤣

Ha good point. Force of habit from having no bushing and needing to shift hard. This was a few months ago and I have since adopted a much softer shift motion.

Indeed it is, but 73 is a transition year, so 74 and up have a different bushing. I believe the 68 through 72 (early bay) have the same bushing setup as the 73, but that could be wrong.
