I’ve seen the same issue with your old pump from others as well…. Weird that they just pull out like that. I’ve hear good things about that carter pump, keep us posted on how you like it. You’re so right, the community is awesome! We all learn from each other making it even better.
Nice video EZ! I used the same fuel pump for my Beetle project paired with a Malpassi FPR008A regulator and a standard motor products RY33 relay that needs a tach signal to close the relay...might be overkill but I liked that the relay only works if a tach signal is present, safety stuff..
Good to see the Carter worked so nice. You probably just have the pump on a manual switch so you can stop it if you like. I did one like the early 911 Porsche wired them with a fuel pump relay but my SR17x starter had a extra terminal that was only hot during cranking that could be used to override running the pump at start and Alternator D+ will keep the fuel pump relay coil latched as long as the engine is turning over fast enough to charge.
Great video , anytime I can learn something new from someone with experience good or bad , I feel it is worth my time. Have safe and happy travels and keep those videos coming 👍
Glad to see you back in the saddle! I’ve been looking into this pump problem as well. Per Milo Manx, I installed a modified Holly fuel regulator which lowered my pressure to 3 1/2 psi which was a tremendous improvement over the 12# I had before. According to technical service at Carter, model P60430 has a pressure rating of 4~6 pounds and recommends model P90091 (looks the same), which has a pressure rating of 2~4 psi and is available from Amazon for $44.31. Of course, using a pressure gauge will tell what a pump will actually deliver. Your channel has been a tremendous help on my VW kit car. Thanks for your good work!
Thank you from here in Wales (UK) . I'm here building a UVA Fugitive Sandrail, not half as sophisticated as yours but just as pretty as a picture. I've got my petrol tank up-front and think I'll fit mine with a bipass fuel pressure regulator to ensure constant controlled pressure, but it was good to see the way you tackled the job. I enjoyed your video. Stay cool and keep rocking,, Roger
Much as I hate those clear fuel filters in the engine bay, it definitely made diagnostics on the compromised membrane of the pump in my situation obvious. . I'm putting in a mechanical but this video is really making me lean towards getting a inline like that. Thank you for sharing knowledge.
your pump wires are the same colors as my Baja Bug pump wires are, watching you get creative thinking is alot of fun with a good functional touch! I miss watching ya enjoy life!
Quick tip when checking fuel pressure with an electric pump. Always have the engine running, the added voltage from th ed alternator will typically raise the fuel pressure 1-2psi. Great video and also excellent heads up on those Mr.Gasket fuel pumps. Yikes! 🔥
Yeah never use the pressed in fittings on fuel pumps, and definitely use the correct pressure for your type of carburetor, thanks EZ for the videos, they may seem obvious or simple to some people but every day a new person decides to become a first time vw owner and they will definitely need your help, thanks again
Hey EZGZ, Kevin here from Australia. Great video. My standard pump is playing up on my 63 bug Betsie and I'm thinking about going electric. Well I've decided I'll be ordering my new electric pump tonight. You'll have to give some follow-up feedback on the performance of the new pump. Anyhoo thanks for sharing man. ✌🏻 Peace.
Thanks for these post's! Just noticing this post because I'm replacing my electric inline on a 71 Super. But I thought I had read on the Amazon listing for the 2-3 psi Carter GP60504 fuel pump needs to be under the fuel tank as you have done because it is not self priming. Has anyone else heard the same? Sorry if I've missed any previous mention of this condition.
Great video! I ordered the carter from the USA, not fitted yet. I got the p90091 which is correct for the 1600, 2-4psi. I got a regulator to be safe. I have more of an idea how to install now, thanks 😊
I may have missed it in the video even watching it a few times. Did you need to add a regulator after the pump ? I'm probably going to use this Carter setup on my 34/3 single carb. Glad to get new videos from ya, happy the cardio plumbing is running well! 1 🌎 1 ❤️🙏🏻
Nice video! I've got a vw sand rail I'm installing the same fuel pump on. Did you wire a relay for that pump or just go from ignition switch to ground? Love the videos!
@@TheEZGZ so you ran the power wire from the coil and then grounded it near by? That's an amazing idea! I was going to run wires to the ignition switch and back but that is a smarter idea just running it from the coil! Thanks!
Good video EZ , do you think if you pulled on that fitting on a new pump it would pull out, any ways look’s like your ready for the trails, thanks for sharing, I will have to start putting up some videos on the Manx soon, later
Well, I'm thinkin it was made to pull in case you don't want a check valve. I going to try leaving it out and run a 1/8 pipe tap in it. It's got threads on the other side??? It's junk so might as well try.....
I have what might be a dumb question I just replaced my old style fuel pump works well just curious does the electric fuel pump last longer or is it just preference.
I didn't have a choice. When I got my 1800 engine it was a late model fuel injected case and the factory did not put a hole wear the fuel pump is supposed to be. I have run them for decades without problems. It just cleans up the engine compartment and the new china pumps are low quality. It's a 50/50 chance of something going wrong. Just roll the dice and do what your heart tells you. It'll be fine!
Thank you for your response was just wondering i like your videos there very informative my car is a 4 seater street legal sandrail with a 2110 found it at a buddies house behind an old shed got it dirt cheap while I was fixing it all up I have to say more than once I was wishing you were my neighbor but I got going pretty damn good I get compliments all the time and sometimes people ask if its for sale. Lol never, I prefer to drive that more than my silverado any way thank you for your videos
How would you plumb in a return line? I accidentally left my fuel pump on and my plugs ended up getting fouled and had a non starter for few days before I figured out what I did.
Any brand recommendations? I found one in a Napa with about 2 inches of dust on packaging and bought it as it was only one available when I needed it. It's the old dial style generic brand and I really don't trust it.
Long time no see!! What type of electric pump would you recommend if you are still running a single carb? I still use the solex/brosol carbs on my aircooled motor. The mechanical pumps gives crap after a few months of driving. Want too go electrical.
Thought about that but decided not to. The tranny gets hot and bell housing and clutch cable limit the space plus the starting motor and electrical is to close for comfort.
