VW Golf Review--GOOD FIRST CAR?

Is the Volkswagen Golf a good first car? Many people ask what I recommend when looking for something practical, with good handling, adequate power and nice interior? The VW Gold does all of these things thanks to a 1.8L Turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp and 199 lb.-ft of torque using regular gas. The Gold has independent suspension and a good platform for above average handling. The interior of the Golf is simple, with nice switches and look and two screen sizes starting with a 6.4-inch unit or optional 8-inch screen. These both come standard with Android Auto or Apple Car Play, plus the screen doubles as a backup camera. The Golf is sold in many different trims, starting at a three door hatchback, a 5-door version, a Golf sportwagen, Golf Alltrack, GTI and Golf R.

I was fortunate enough to have a brand new 2010 Golf as my first car. I had wanted a Golf/ GTI since I was a kid. VWs were sort of aspirational for my family who could only afford Japanese cars at the time. I was super happy with the upscale nature, solid feel, and practicality of mine. It was 7 1/2 yrs old and had nearly 100k trouble-free miles on it when it saved my life in a crash going through an intersection at 40 MPH (60 kph). If you've got the budget, for just a small price premium over other cars in the same class, the VW Golf is a car that is as refined as cars a class or 2 above. In my opinion, it's the only car in its class that doesn't "feel" like an economy car. I highly recommend.

I just sold my 07 GTI to a friend that was in dire need for a car. My GTI had 283,000 km on her when I sold it to him. It runs beautifully. I sold it certified. I wasn't trying to unload it. Anyway it was a great car that never failed us. Keep up the great work Zack.

Korean cars are sold in Europe with zero tariffs thanks to the EU-South Korea free trade agreement (FTA), which has been in force since 2011. The EU figured the size of Korea was handleable with no fuss but Japan on the other hand is too huge to let in freely. Just as you said, Nissan is working well together with its parent company Renault in Europe, but the others are struggling to compete in the highly protectionist bloc economy market.

I'm 19 and have a 2017 manual 5 door Golf S. I think it's a great first car (not my first, had a Jetta TDI previously and a Scion FRS for a bit). But mine just hit 10k miles (16k km) and it's been excellent for both driving around town and road trips. Also, it has to have one of the easiest manual gearboxes on the market. The one thing that has surprised me has been the fuel economy; I did a 280 mi (450 km) trip last week and averaged about 45 mpg (5.2l/100km). My only complaints are the lack of a 6th gear and the wide gap in ratios between gears 1-3 that make smooth shifting difficult as well as the fact that it hangs revs like crazy. Also, at 3k miles an o2 sensor went out which was covered under warranty (would have been ~300 USD). But the interior quality and materials are excellent with no rattles to date (NOT true about my old MK6 Jetta) and the standard Android Auto is great as it gives you the option of running Waze in dash which when paired with a good radar detector makes for a great highway cruiser.

I like that it has an oil temperature gauge - especially because it's a turbo. Most people don't know that you can kill a turbo if you fail to bring the engine oil up to operating temperature (90 - 100 degrees) before revving it up beyond 3,000 rpm.

I think first car buyer would be more along the lines of like a Kia Rio, Kia Soul, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa, Nissan Sentra, etc. Something that is $13k to $19k. $25k is a steep start, even a base price of $20k.

The Elantra GT (hatchback) starts at $20449 in Canada. The Cruze hatchback is closer to $21000. The Rio, Accent, Fit, Fiesta, and Versa are all smaller than the Golf. Then again, most manufacturers don't sell a 'base' model hatchback anymore in Canada.

The only drawback now is the price is higher than it was a few years ago. In comparing 6 different comparable models from different manufacturers, the Golf was the most expensive. I was this close in getting me a 2015 vw golf. I got me an online subscription to Consumer Reports. According to CR, the Golf "spotty reliability" is one of its greatest weakness. The models 2015-16 are bad, the 2017 is ok and the 2018 is really bad. I have checked almost all vw golf/gti/jetta RU-vid reviews for models 2015-18 and very few talk about the car's reliability. Yes, they are nice to drive but what's the point of buying a 3-4 year headache. Shouldn't "reliability" of a car be a part of a review?🔬🔬🔬 ...🤨🤔

Great points about the merits of the Golf. Also, consider the new 6 yr warranty for 2018 models which is a nice-to-have if a buyer is considering keeping the vehicle for a while. Between the turbo and supporting systems as well as all of the electronics in the vehicle, I'm not sure that I'd want to run these vehicles out of warranty for very long. I'm considering a manual transmission GTI middle trim (SE in the USA), which is around $28k USD.

The manual handbrake is the reason why I'd buy it in Canada - no electrics to fail and jam the handbrake on, which can ruin the brake pads and rotor surfaces of the rear disc brakes.

Yes, believe it or not some of us out of school in our first jobs can actually afford these cars on our own. For anyone in the market, I would strongly suggest the Civic EX-T or Hatch if we're talking mid-trims here. Dyno tests on CivicX confirmed that the 174HP figure is at the wheels for the 1.5T engine. I had a 2017 Golf Wolfsburg as a rental, and truth be told I could feel the torque out of could be felt much more than the Civic, night and day difference. But, the quality of life in the EX-T is superior to me. The suspension feels much more compliant and sporty, the steering more direct, the seats more comfortable, the interior a bit quieter, and just the overall look of the dashboard and center console is bar none in this class. If I got a Gold, it would be the GTI no contest, but in this mid-ish 20's, I really think save up a bit more for the EX-T, especially since in Canada it comes with Sensing (in the states it's a $1000 add-on for the EX-T, which is a steal of a price).

Im a huge fan of Zack for many years. His verdicts on vehicles are trully amazing. But I disagree with Zacks review on this video. Yes, VW is an awesome brand who makes high quality vehicle and I myself used to drive one. However, you need to have a solid income if you want to get a German brands. They cost much more to maintain compare to Japanese brands. Zack's recommendation would make sense for wealthy people. However, for an average people VW is bit too expansive to maintain especially if they are young.

Hello, a new VW has a 4-year warranty, hardly a money-pit, plus you can buy an extended warranty.

Zack, we will have to agree to disagree , the Corolla iM has a 6 speed manual, costs less and does not need an extended warranty. On top of that Toyota makes hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Canada and employs thousands of Canadians ;)

Some people can't sleep at night unless they buy an extended warranty. You probably will never use your property insurance policy however it's required if you have a mortgage by the lender. I enjoy sleeping knowing my RS5 and Boxster S have extended warranties. I feel like sleeping after that long type.

Outside of the scheduled maintenance stuff (oil and other consumables), what did you find with your vehicle or know of, in general, which make German vehicles more expensive to maintain -- assuming the vehicle is under manufacturer warranty? I'm genuinely curious as I'm considering an '18 GTI.

I wish the 1.4L TSi engine had chain camshaft drive. It uses belt instead, very risky, especially with VW.

Currently contemplating about buying this Golf, the Mazda3 or the Hyundai Elantra Sport. Which is the best buy?
@runforit420
@runforit420 6 лет назад
Mazda3 - nice car, but firmer suspension and more road noise. It does handle really well. Similar fuel economy with the 2.5L 4 in the GT models, even though Transport Canada rates the Mazda3 GT as having higher combined fuel economy. Mazda also doesn't support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, yet, but Mazda keeps saying that those systems will be supported "in the future". Elantra Sport - great suspension (as firm as the Mazda3), good infotainment system (the Infinity stereo is fantastic), quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission, and a really big cargo area. Drawbacks: after my Ford Focus with the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission, I'd be a bit hesitant to buy another car with a dry dual-clutch transmission (Hyundai did have some problems with it in the the early 2016 Tucson models, such as the transmission arbitrarily shifting into neutral, but I believe those problems have been fixed), and there is a lip in the cargo area when the back seats have been folded down, so it makes loading long and heavy items, such as Ikea furniture, harder to put in the cargo area. Golf - very quiet on the highway (as quiet as my Ford Focus on the highway), softer suspension tuning (but it doesn't wallow at all). One of my colleagues has a 2015 Golf with the 1.8 TSI and 6 speed automatic (torque converter automatic) and his car has been more reliable than his old 2008 Toyota Matrix. VW has had indifferent build quality in the past, though. I hope this helps!

Ramzi Tabbara Elantra Sport easily. Tech, luxury, and speed. It goes for around $19k here fully loaded. So nice
@ramzitabbara2639
@ramzitabbara2639 6 лет назад
@runforit420 All good points, I'm leaning most towards the Elantra Sport (because of its power mostly.) But like you said, my main concern is the transmission, I heard it's kind of rough at low speeds. Ugh why isn't Hyundai Canada's powertrain warranty 10 years like Hyundai U.S.A? I would've bought it in a heartbeat
@ramzitabbara2639
@ramzitabbara2639 6 лет назад
@Blake Swan I'm assuming you're in the US? Because that price is impossible in CAD (atleast in my region - it's about $34,000 after taxes and fees)

As Zack mentioned, the Golf's torque is really more impressive than the horsepower. There is 199 ft-lbs with the automatic - the manual does not have 199 ft-lbs (I think 184 ft-lbs). While the 1.8TSI has about 31 hp less than the Elantra GT Sport, the numbers really bely how much power it actually does have - the Golf feels more powerful than 170 hp. Hyundai has had problems with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission in the past - instances of shifting into neutral unexpectedly when the car is in motion in the 2016 Tucson, which have been fixed and it doesn't seem to be happening anymore. I test drove the Elantra GT Sport and the transmission is a lot better at low speeds than my Focus' transmission, but, then again, I don't creep forward in a car with a dual-clutch transmission - you're either on the throttle or not, and the clutches and release servos are also brand new. It also shifts a lot faster than the PowerShift transmission, which is fairly slow to shift. The Golf's automatic also shifts really quickly, almost as fast as the DSG, which I'd completely avoid due to previous historical problems that I don't think have been completely worked out by VW. I found that the dark headliner made me feel very claustrophobic inside the Elantra. Also, keep in mind that because of Hyundai's aggressive "factory incentive pricing" that happen often during the year, Hyundai and Kia resale values aren't incredible. The Golf will hold its value better than a Hyundai or Kia. Also, in the GTA, the financing rate on the Elantra GT Sport is higher than the Golf currently at 84 months.
