Their claims of a revolutionary car seem justified. I could easily see this as the car that marks the moment that EVs go from early adopters to mainstream.

I sat in the ID3 at the Frankfurt motor show, and played around with the tech. It's quite impressive especially the amount of space inside.

Great vid as always, thank you. I think VW are committed to a future in EVs because they can see which way the industry is going like we all can, but they have to balance the transition from ICE to EV to keep themselves profitable during the process. A combination of improved charging infrastructure and main stream car manufacturers building a wide range of affordable EVs will really get the EV revolution moving. After 100 years of ICE cars, full conversion to EVs is going to take time, but it’s unstoppable now.
@redxsage
@redxsage 4 года назад
Because the conversion is _'unstoppable'_ it should happen much, much more quickly. VW is aware of this. That is the reason for their delay in release. If you own as ny petroleum stocks, be sure to dump them the week before VW ID.3 is released.

It looks really nice in white with black trim and detailing. Driving A3 etron loving it. Charge it everyday or twice a day like my mobile phone. If the range on hybrid A3 was anywhere near 50 miles I wouldn't even bother to go fully electric as I am driving on electric almost 80 to 90% of time. Last I filled up with petrol was nearly 2 to 3 months ago. Once you go electric no going back, it's just so serene and calming. I don't think I got close to any kind of road rage since I got the etron a3. Loving it lots 😎

Charging at 11kW at home is only possible if your house has 3-phase electrics (Most German & Scandinavian homes do). UK home charging will likely be more like the usual 7.4kW.
@joetheprogrammer0
@joetheprogrammer0 4 года назад
Not sure what the cost to install is, but if you live in a house, you can ask your electric company to fit a 3-phase supply
@ouethojlkjn

@@joetheprogrammer0 Minimum of £1500 plus vat and then upwards. Depends on access to your property, local permits, road works, parking. It is not a small job. Average price is around £3,000 plus vat. I doubt it would be worth the cost to get that 50% increase unless there are other savings.
@niki123489
@niki123489 4 года назад
if you have a dryer or an air conditioning, you probably have a circuit to charge the car at 11kW too. Dryers and air conditionings need 220-230 V from the grid.
@joetheprogrammer0
@joetheprogrammer0 4 года назад
@@niki123489 In Europe, single phase is already 230 V, so tumble dryers here generally just run off single phase. That's fine for the 7 kW chargers, but for 11 or 22 kW charging, you need a 3-phase supply because each pin in the connector in the connector can only handle 32 A (~7 kW). Not sure how higher charging rates are handled in the US since 3-phase supplies aren't normal there as far as I'm aware (220 V is through split phase) and their EV connectors (type 1) don't support 3-phase

Like you, I was sceptical after several years of "Its coming! It's coming!", but sometimes the friends who show up late to the party we just busy getting primed - and they are often the most fun you have all night. I think VW will succeed with this car - and the platform. I hope there is an all wheel drive wagon version (like the Golf All Track) headed for Canada. It would be a great replacement for our Q5, and a nice compliment to our Niro EV.
@redxsage

I'm pretty sure Volkswagen AG plans to keep their all wheel drive EV platforms exclusive to AUDI and PORSCHE for the foreseeable future. And, Canada won't see any iteration of the ID.3 for 12-to-18 months after California. So, basically, never. This is a Euro car only for now.

Just for clarity. IONITY is a joint venture with BMW, Mercedes, Ford and VW... ID3 "Prototype" came after the design for ID3 was signed off to prepare the public. ID3 is much taller than the Golf. The ID.3 is 4261mm long, 1809mm wide and 1552mm high, which means it’s 3mm longer, 10mm wider and 60mm taller than a Golf.

@Pete.Bernfeld
@Pete.Bernfeld 4 года назад
It pretty much ticks all the boxes. Stockpiling is a good idea for a couple of reasons. It allows VW to sort out any production glitches, and allows for any software updates before release. Yes you have to wait for the release date, BUT it will allow you to get a firm elivery date if you order now, and if you wait until it's released before ordering, the wait won't be as long as it is now for other, supposedly available, makes. It allows VW time to get a charging network in place. OK, that's three reasons not a couple, but you get my drift. Price guessrimates seem reasonable compared to cars offering similar ranges, and the 48KWh version may leave the MG struggling. A new Beetle? Could well be! My 40KWh Leaf lease is up early '21, the coffee grounds in the bottom of the cup indicate a 58 KWh 'New Beetle' in my future.

We have a 1st Gen Leaf (a great car) and an ICE car for towing and long distance, and plan to swop both for a 200 mile-range EV in a couple of years. VW seem to be really going for the EV market with the ID.3, and with their technological and development might, I'll bet this will be a well thought out car. I've heard that VW have bought large stocks of battery materials to avoid future logjams. If the ID.3 is readily available from around £25-30k in 18-24 months then I might start forgiving VW for diesel gate. The icing on the cake would be if it can tow (hope), otherwise we'll have to switch back to tents.

I have a reservation and saw it first hand at Frankfurt show debut. Technical and build quality all looks very good and as I expected. Unfortunately all the insider rumours and extrapolation from now revealed German prices points to even the no options VW Id3 launch edition will come close to £40k (i.e very similar or even more than the disappointingly expensive premium Tesla model 3). The full options will be near £50k - and this is only the mid range battery remember! If true this is just unacceptable to me for a very definitely non premium brand and I will cancel my reservation. I definitely thought that VW were playing it straight when they said price will be around a well packaged Golf diesel. I don't know of any Golf that comes near £50k list price. Looks like I've been played as a fool.

Rear camera and energy brake assist should be standard now surely on the base model too. This is what I like about Tesla. They don’t scrimp on safety features even with their base models. Yes they are more expensive cars but surely in this day and age we should expect the best safety features as standard to protect your family. I agree with extras for higher spec models being things like the glass roof and sound system etc.

We just bought the the Model 3 Standard Plus at £37,260 plus £950 for a pre-fitted Westfalia type detachable tow bar. I think the price fluctuates along with the value of the pound to the dollar, but the lower, (yet very high specked) Model 3, is becoming more affordable as apposed to the 'luxury' reputation Tesla have. Seems on par with the VW price wise. My dad used to run us round in a succession of second hand VW Beetles........amazingly reliable. So I can't wait to see the iD's.

Other reviews noticed that the interior is more plasticky than the Golf's and the price creeps up rapidly when selecting options that you don't want to be without, such as a heat pump instead of a resistive heater. It won't be a game changer at all, but it follows the competition closely. Marketing of VW is still quite good, but don't expect it is heaven.

The ID3 looks so much like the Golf, will be interesting if it takes over for the Golf eventually. I don't think VW are late to the party, yes it took Diesel-Gate to change them which is unfortunate but they seem to be on the EV Bandwagon and eventually they will have more ID vehicles available. It is nice they are starting with a large SUV that costs more than most can afford. Just means once they do appear on the roads spring next year(2020) means less ICE on the roads.

The 58Kwh First Edition in the UK won’t be the Max spec, my theory is because this would come in above the £40,000 luxury car tax which plagues the model 3. I think, VW's claims of the ID.3 being the "next big thing since Beetle and Golf" are justified. For a couple of reasons, some of which already pointed out. But is IMHO worth to summarize them here: 1. It's a entirely new platform. MEB is the basis for all EV's coming out of VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi and the likes for the near future. One can expect many more models to appear. 2. It's design puts petrol car concepts to the rest. It's much bigger inside than you would expect based on the outer dimension. Shape has changed (no long bonnet anymore, no flashy air intake fakes, etc) to utilize what EV as a "all in the floor" platform has to offer. 3. There is an entirely new factory for it. They have been starting more or less from scratch. And there are more factories in the planning stage. They seriously bet on the car being successful and put their money where their mouth is. 4. The ID.3 is reasonably priced and offers reasonable performance and features. Price is Ok, range is fair to excellent (depending on model), they got the charging options right, the interior/exterior dimensions are suitable for the majority of usecases and the performance is also adequate for most people and markets. I will be in the market for an EV the next two years and the ID.3 is a serious contender. Teslas are too big for me, as I can do with something smaller - although they still have an edge.

Unfortunately the manufacturers have decided that small cars are only good for the city, so they put small batteries in them and low charging speeds. They believe for motorways people need big cars for some reason. I am perfectly happy in a small car on the motorway. The point being the new Zoe, nice battery size however only 50 kwh CCS charger as an expensive option and no adaptive cruise control as they say it is not designed for the motorways.

Also I want to feel like I'm not being screwed over on the price! The ID3 seems to start at the right price about £27k but the optioned car we all want is WAY more expensive than that. I think I'll just wait a couple of years and decide then. Although I would say the MG seems like a great deal ATM but I'd prefer a smaller car.

With their long and often dubious history, I'll believe it when it happens. The car sounds about right by 2019 standards, but they're still stringing out the release process; making people wait for unacceptably long times for a car in a rapidly evolving marketplace. The danger is that it will likely sound like a run-of-the-mill car at too high a price, a year from now. The MG and maybe the Peugeot/Dacia will (MG already have) undercut their prices drastically, and others will follow suit, in fairly quick succession. For Volkswagen to live up to their name, 'People's Car', both the price and performance need to be affordable and adequate for people's requirements. As stated, wait and see what happens, and then decide whether VW have provided the correct product.

Buy a cheap Peugeot or Dacia ... and be happy ... There is no reason to complain cause buyers decide. A corsa and peugeot are not comparable ... cause in 10 to 15 years they are crap or better reborn or reused regarding its metal. You can buy dozens of VW Golf in good shape from the 80ies but nearly no Peugeot or Opel Corsa. Why? crap - in the long run. i had bought a new Opel GSI 16 V back in its dawn as a Golf GTI hunter chaser killer. After 2 years the complete gasoline lines from the tank to the engine were rotted and leaking. Great engine, great seats (from a supplier), great design .... but a piece of crap, noises, ... rust. Born to rust. Never bought an Opel again and went on to BMW and its 7 series and 2 dozens of Mercedes up to SL 600 and down to Smart ... The id3 is a great car in the current state ... but I can not see if something better arrives. Haven't seen any serious competition while VW is attacking the entry level market at 20000€ or less with sko city go or seat mii or VW e-up. This is the real and easiest market for ev ... daily drivers with less than 100 km each day and a huge part of city traffic. You do not need 300 km range on cars in urban traffic like care agents for elderly or "meal on wheels" drivers or pizza delivery ... they drive 50 to 125 km each day 365 days ... as company cars. Ask a dhl parcel driver about his daily mileage in a city: 60km and most of that from and to depot.

My problem is the lack of physical buttons for instance the lack of rear windows switch on the drivers door is crazy since since they put them on the mk8 golf which shares most of the dash elements, the seat colours are just drab, give us a light interior option and some colours for the outside, red green, yellow,burgundy I really am struggling to justify keeping my deposit down and still waiting for vw U.K. to get a demo before making a final decision, why do car companies think that going ev means we want less creature comforts, only Hyundai and Kia seem to have got the formula right in the sub 45k category, Nissan still hasn’t fixed the steering wheel movement and listen to previous owners that we want a liquid cooled/heated pack I hate to say it but I may just jump to mk 8 gte instead and it’s a real shame vw kuldip have really done well but instead it’s playing homage to i3 and cutting corners everywhere
