How far can a Hyundai Kona travel at speed in appalling conditions? Let’s find out, and while we’re at it my wife gets to sit in the drivers seat and give her opinion. I’m not sure she’s quite ready for adaptive cruise control but it’s entertaining seeing her try to use it!
The idea of this video was to see if the Kona can really match the range we see quoted all the time if you drive it like a petrol or diesel car. 70mph on a motorway mile after mile. It’s going to struggle, surely?

22k miles into the ownership of a Kona electric (my first EV) and I couldn’t be more impressed. Majority of those miles have been on the motorway between the West Midlands and North Lakes and I tend to get an average efficiency of between 3.2 - 4 mi/kWh. Not as impressive as many people report but still provides a reliable range of >200 miles even in cold and windy weather which is more than enough to make my key weekly commute without the need to stop and charge en route (what originally persuaded me to get the Kona). Agree that adaptive cruise coupled with LFA takes all the effort out of motorway driving and makes long journeys much more relaxing. Find the stop-start function in crawling traffic particularly useful.

This was a very good realistic review! Sarah was very brave to try something new for the very first time in the rain and on camera! I hope you tell her we think that was impressive! I currently lease a 2018 Ioniq PHEV but the next car in 2021 will be a Kona EV 64kW if I can manage it. You two are hilariously refreshing! Thanks ever so much. I own a 2019 Niro in Vermont. Over 5 and a half months, I have driven it 8411 miles at an average of 4.59 miles per kWh or .135 kWh. I have driven 241 miles, charged to 100% and had 22% let when I got hone. Mostly drive at 60 on the freeway. However, winter is coming and studded tires and -10C°. US high speed charging infrastructure is primitive, was in Quebec last week and there was a lot more. Drove back in 2°C at 62 with the heat on and performance dropped to 3.6 miles per Kwh

Hi Ryan, let me start off by saying OMG your wife is such a character, . She had me in stitches 😂😂, excellent that was sooooo much fun to watch. Thank you. 👍, and thank you to your mrs she is great. You must invite her to more of your reviews on EVs. Secondly although my wife owns a 2018 leaf and loves it i think the kona could well be on our list when looking for a second EV in a couple of years time. It sounds to me like the perfect EV for what i need it for. Great vlog Ryan. Keep up the excellent work. 👌👍

Thanks Ryan, very useful. I’m not a fan of the interior but clearly if you need or want range then this is worth considering. I think it’s easy to fall into range is everything mode & for some folk it might be a necessity but that range has a price which for my family I can’t justify. I don’t need it, so I’m not prepared to join the waiting list. Can’t deny it’s appeal though. Loved your wife’s thoughts & comments, mine would be the same with cruise let alone adaptive cruise.

We also have a red Nissan Leaf Tekna (30 kWh) plus a blue Kona (64 kWh), and I loved this video so much I invited my wife Liz to come and share it with me, sitting on my lap. She is also rather tecchy averse, and she is now OK with the Leaf for her daily 40 mile commute across Glasgow, but a bit worried about driving the Kona, but she loved the video. We have a big 700 mile trip next weekend all the way from Glasgow to Cheltenham and back., and I hope this has given her the confidence to give it a go and enjoy all the extra feautures. So thanks to you, and your lovely lady: she is a RU-vid star in the making, and I have no doubt one day we will meet up in realspace. {{{hugs}}}

I am going to test drive a Kona EV this week. Very excited. I live in Quebec, Canada which accounts for 60% of all electric car sales in Canada! I've had my Kona electric since July. I can get 300 miles around our local, hilly roads, driving lightly but not absurdly slowly. So keeping up with traffic, sticking at the speed limit when appropriate, etc etc. On motorways I agree with your 240-250 estimate, but reckon I was getting that at 75mph - but the conditions were nothing like as bad so less strain on the battery. Just a magnificent car.

My Kona Electric Premium SE 64kWh gives the same kind of range as your review model. Same drop of range in cold and dark conditions. Worst so far was a 212 mile drive up the M6 where I had no destination charger - chose to duck off to a rapid charger at Carnforth just in case. Effective range on 100% charge was 205 miles. Same as you, heater, AC, lights, wipers, heated seats... Everything on. Summer driving, I was regularly getting 280 miles on a full charge. The car's indicated range does give a high degree of confidence and alleviate range anxiety!

Hi Ryan, great video and your wife was great! I was wondering, did you have the Adaptive Cruise control on when you hit the rock, if you did, do you think you would have missed the rock if you had it turned off? Because in theory, you'd be concentrating more due to not relying on the 'lane assist' etc. whilst driving. By the way I'm glad you both had a good time at the Wedding👍👍😉🔌

The same as Paul I also get over 300 mile out of our Kona, all be it at a slower pace than 70. At the moment on local driving at speeds around 30 to 55 I get 5-2ml per kw. Very happy with that. I’m told the regen on the Kona is huge at over 100kw but I’m not sure how accurate that is.

I've had a Kona for a few months, I find it's pretty much impossible to get under 4 miles/kwh, even at motorway speeds. The GOM does start out a bit wierd sometimes, l've seen 370 after.a full charge once, but it does get a lot more accurate towards 50%. At lower speeds, with a little care, 300 miles is very achievable,at least in UK spring/summer temps
@ateeqn1985
@ateeqn1985 4 года назад
mikeselectricstuff OK, but if your kona is '68 or early' 19 plate the GOM needs a software upgrade because too optimistic (see nigel's video, ev puzzle). 4mi/kWh *64kWh =254mi so about the same as eNiro if your driving uneconomically. Still really really good. Personally I trust a 'single charge' journey much more than GOM, which have been reported to tail off below 50mi range. E niro definitely can do 250mi at ~ 70mph with a/c on. I expect kona can do a little more due to airo dynamics. On a similar note my eNiro economy rarely goes above 5mi/kWh.. It is usually 4.3 mi/kWh. (all my experience is based on the last month of UK weather)

Thank you to Sarah for getting you going then would your channel exist if you hadn't got the Leaf? :) Love the adaptive cruise part, I would've taken hands off do it myself in my Ioniq with LKAS but the Kona has LFA which is better to just try it good for about 10s can get a drink or reach for something if alone in car from the glovebox even. My cruise is always set to adaptive, wouldn't drive without it.

Interesting test of the cruise control, I thought general advice was not to use cruise control on wet motorways due to the increased liklihood of aqua-planing. Most systems cause the vehicle to speed up and lose control. Shame about the tyre, lack of a spare in modern cars worries me.

This review couldn't have been better times. We have had a leasing offer from our energy supplier, EDF, on leasing an EV and the Kona is one of the models offered. We are hoping to look at/drive one in the coming week and see what happens. At present we have a 5 year old Prius which has only done 40,000 miles but we have roof panels and it seems sensible to take advantage of them.

most people would drive about 140 miles in bloody awful UK traffic before needing a pee stop. Pee stop takes about 20 mins even when direct so that extra 100 miles in case, no loo, no charger, no tea or coffee etc should alleviate that propagandised anxiety form some quarters are still so fond of.

I don't understand the commons about using cruise control in the rain. 1) it should be adaptive so it helps maintain distance. 2) the car has traction control. What the hell difference does it make if the road is wet? It will have the traction and react the same way as if cruise wasn't on in those conditions. Seriously people, I've used cruise in the rain for 40 years and had cars with adaptive cruise for the last seven, with no problems. it's not like you can't still brake yourself if need be.

Lot’s of opportunities to be accused of ‘mansplaining’ there Ryan 😬....Mrs. E. Niro drives the car more than I do but has been reluctant to use cruise control..Using all the buttons is a ‘man thing’ apparently..Mmm, OK. The Hyundai looks great, same drive train as the e-Niro but a bit smaller. Quoted range on these cars are identical. When it comes to giving people an idea of the realistic range on these cars I think we have to bear in mind that neither of them were really available until the Spring this year..so no one has gone through a full winter with them yet. We are up to 13,000 km now and our weekly driving around rural France suggests a comfortable 500 Km (300 miles in old money?)... This is based on my taking a note of the kWh/100 km reading when finishing a journey. As yet we have never gone below 10% on the battery, we charge it once a week and go from 20-80%, only going up to 100% if we have a longer journey coming up. On the autoroute cruising at 120 km/h (typically) I reckon the range drops to 400 km, so about 250 miles..This is based on runs to Bordeaux airport (200 Km each way) in the hot summer (35c plus) with air con running hard..but of course you get to the airport to collect or drop off your person, you have to pay to park and there’s a row of free charging points, so you get some 7.2Kw top up. In April we did a trip to Orleans (see video on Kia e-Niro diaries channel)..it was cold, raining and into a headwind all the way. On leaving it said we have 480km range on 100% charge..The distance to Orleans from here is 280 km...but on arriving at the hotel we had less than 100 km of range left...all motorway driving. So, I reckon in the winter we will get a bit less than that on long journeys with fast roads. Thanks for a really useful posting, it really is a shame that both Hyundai and Kia can't deliver these cars. My Kia dealer in Niort says they on had 3,500 e-Niros for the entire French market this year and he is already sold his allocation for 2020.

I’m not saying the range is exactly the same, (254mi) but the Model 3 Standard Plus, is currently £38,500, (which i can’t afford). But Hyundai have just given Oct 2019+ prices of the Kona Electric: £35,100 Premium, inc. PICG £37,450 Premium SE, inc. PICG As the latter has a list of £40,950, the car will be subject to VED. Free for first year, then £320 per yr. for 5yrs. Effectively adding an additional £1,600 to the price tag. But be careful about what you’d like extra on the Premium. If the added extras raise the base price to £40k exc. if the PICG, you’ll still be paying VED.
