I did just recently have to replace my driver CV axle. However it was the original axle with 260k miles on it and the main reason why it went bad is because the boot ripped and the cv joint got full of water. My passenger axle, which was replaced a year before I lifted it, is still going strong.

@KlaptOutOffroad

In theory, it should work length wise. However because the entire rear axle assembly has swung down 4" more than normal, you might have some clearance issues with the shock rubbing against the coil spring. I haven't tested that yet, but it's something to keep in mind if you try it.

@KlaptOutOffroad
@KlaptOutOffroad 6 месяцев назад
Mine has the manual 5 speed. When I daily drove this thing stock for several years, I hated how low the gearing was because the rpm would be pushing into the upper 2000 range at highway speeds. Now with the bigger tires, it cruises around low to mid 2000s
@YeahWhatever30
@YeahWhatever30 11 месяцев назад
With the strut extender would you still need to do the sketchy ass ratchet strap spring compression? Or could you grab enough to get it set up?
@YeahWhatever30
@YeahWhatever30 11 месяцев назад
So I decided to go ahead and do this on my 2002 vw jetta tdi. Turns out with the strut extenders you do not need the precompress the springs for the struts. Which was nice. I also found some 2" shock extenders for the back which I bought 2 sets of and just doubled them up. Now I just need to get some tires and hit the backroads.

@andrewmackenzie3340
@andrewmackenzie3340 Год назад
If I'm not mistaken, i swear someone already makes rear shock extenders for the back if needed. My front strut mounts need replaced so im really considering just getting the rest of the stuff and going to town. Besides hitting that pinch weld, did you have to cut anything else for the tires to fit? Also do you have a video on your brush guard up front?
@KlaptOutOffroad
@KlaptOutOffroad Год назад
ya know, i had never thought about it until now, but theres a chance those front strut extenders might fit onto the rear shocks. It still wouldn't make the shock long enough as it needs to be 4 inches longer, not 2. However it would mean making a shorter, stronger bottom shock mount. As far as tire clearance, hammering in that pinch weld is all I did. They still rub against the inner fender liner, but that won't cause any harm. Also, here's the video to my brush guard ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qq5fbp3OhiM.html

@dteche1985 on mine, my tires nearly rub the rear inner fenderwell and that's without the plastic liner installed. There's also only a ¼" gap between the tire and the bottom spring perch of the strut. I think if you hammer in the inner fenderwell and either install wheels spacers or cut a notch out of the spring perch, you should be able to make them fit. If you haven't already done so, look into the "lifted water-cooled vws" page on Facebook, I've seen plenty of MK4s running larger tires on there so maybe you can track down some better info on the procedure.

There's some camber on the front wheels, but it's hardly noticeable and while I don't put a lot of miles on this thing, i havent noticed any abnormal side wear in the approx 5000 miles I've put on it since the lift. Same goes with cv axles. I replaced the passenger one a few years before the lift and it's still going strong. I did have to replace the driver one not too long ago, but it was the original with over 250k miles on it so it was over due. Long story short, I can't say weather prolonged driving such as using it as a daily is going to cause premature wear of tires and components, but just using it for certain trips and only putting a few thousand miles a year on it seems to be working just fine for me.

@thomasbilheimer7705 could check for play in your cv drive shaft. At stock height it may not have been noticeable but with the lift the cv joint in the axle is at more of an angle and might be making it apparent that it's worn out. Atleast that's the first place I would look.

@@KlaptOutOffroad I have extra 40mm height with all stock rear coils and shocks, but under coils placed rubber spacers about 30mm. Now I plan to change leaking rear shocks to BILSTEIN - B4 OE Replacement 19-140032 and maybe coils with cherokee ones (Lesjofors 4142108). Also I have screw-on extenders for rear shocks with 29mm lenght. What do you think about my choice of hardware? Maybe cheaper ones exists, like chinese or something? I have chinese thicker front coils and they are ok for 5000km and about for a half of year.
@KlaptOutOffroad
@KlaptOutOffroad Год назад
@@stockfootagez if your planning on going with cherokee springs, you'll definitely want to loose those rubber spacers as you won't need them. One thing I didn't think about until now is there might be issues with the shock rubbing against the spring is you use screw on extenders and mount to the original shock mounts. With the way the whole rear axle assembly swings down with more lift, it pulls the shock closer to the spring. I had that issue when I mounted the F150 shock before building that shock extender. Granted it's a much thicker shock, it still possible it'll still rub with the thinner stock shock. The shock extender I built kind of protrudes out and away from the spring, so it gives it a little bit of clearence between the shock and spring. Also, I've gotta ask...what spring only lasts 5km/half a year? I couldn't imagine having to change out my springs twice a year!
@stockfootagez
@stockfootagez Год назад
@@KlaptOutOffroad Thanks for detailed answer, and the springs are lasting much longer - I have only mentioned that mine lasts at least for half a year without any problems and I'm sure that they will last at least a decade.

Your rear springs and axle have different geometry, you can lift them but you'll have to research what others have done and it may cost a bit more. It may also limit the amount you can lift it without significant fabrication or modifications.

@salihplayer480p6 when you say suspension rod, are you refering to the strut or shock absorber? If so, the front of the vehicle still retains the strut inside of the coil spring. Just think about then adding the lift kit and springs with the big tyres your going to have an insane iff road golf
