Have you noticed oil sweating near the top of your engine? You may have a leaking valve cover, a common problem due to the fragility of rubber gaskets; over time, they become brittle and lose their sealing capabilities due to countless hot/cold cycles.
Ali and Mike are here to show you how to replace a valve cover gasket on a 2001 B5.5 Passat with 2.8 liter engine, but this video is applicable to similar-era Audi A4 and A6 models.

Great video I have that 2.8L v6 in old ‘98 a6 and been figuring I need VC gaskets this was a good video to remind me.. and I have major oil burning which I suspect timing chain tensioner gaskets, so I’ll do those and cam cups .. thanks for your video 👍🏻

I used a very different method to part the covers from cam housing as I couldn't get them to budge... I used some ratchet tie-downs looped around the cast of the breather tube then looped from above around a ceiling beam of my workshop. Tightened up the tie down ratchet then they popped loose. Not a recommended way, as lots could have gone wrong, but it worked.

I was surprised that RTV is being used for only the head/gasket and not the cover. I can understand using sealer in those areas where the gasket folds or bends and the triangular area I assume is near the cam. Other side is similar except you have to pull the overflow bottle from the rad out of the way. This job is mandatory when you pull spark plug wires and find oil soaked ends! So that's where all the oil is going! Glad it's not the head!

I used fel pro gaskets and only used small amount of high temp silicone on the corners. No leaks 4 yrs later. Do you really have to put sealant on the spark plug tubes if using gaskets already?

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but why no sealant on the upper side of the VCG? Also, just curious if the 2004 2.8 came from factory with sealant, or was it a dry install from factory? Asking because I'm currently working on one, recently acquired project for moms, and as of now I see no VGC leaks, but I do see red rtv all around the seams of both valve covers. Looks like it was possibly done at some point...? I received no maintenance history with the car, so no clue as to what's been done. Just know that I have a bad coil and will be ordering from you probably end of this week. Final question, are CCT, half moons, and cam seals also a common leak source?
@rhettbh
@rhettbh 7 лет назад
this is probably a dumb question, but the oil has to be drained to do this right? or does the oil drain below the covers?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
Hello Rhett, you won't have to drain the oil prior to starting this job. Most of the oil will be contained within the oil pan.

@Snowdog216
@Snowdog216 10 месяцев назад
Its common for those to break no matter how careful you are, its just an old part subject to a heat and gets brittle . I would suggest replacing the two hoses and the PCV valve. There is cooler line ni ...pp.le in the back of drivers side valve cover gasket that will need to be removed to get access, and the hard curved air intake hose that I think has to come out.
@corporaljd

What is the proper name for the radiator connector that is prone to breaking? I would like to replace it. The previous owner of my car or their mechanic broke it and taped it up with electric tape.

I finally found the part online. It is a "breather hose" or "crankcase breather hose." $25-50 depending on the brand.

@DaytonCarCare
@DaytonCarCare 6 лет назад
Yes this is wrong. You DO NOT need sealer. Only point you may need it is a small amount on the corners of the gasket that go over the cam guides. Also do not use any type of power tool to put on the bolts since they don't require much torque. Do them by hand. I forget the spec usually they are only 7 to 11 ft lbs.

You applied silicone sealant to the underside of the gasket - why not the topside as well?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 7 лет назад
Hello, it's only necessary to apply the silicone on the bottom portion of the gasket to make sure its properly seated in the groove.
@DaytonCarCare
@DaytonCarCare 6 лет назад
Actually RTV or sealant isn't necessary. These are pressed fit rubber gaskets that seal themselves. The nut studs guide them into place. Only place you made need RTV is a small amount on the corners where it bends over the cam shaft ends. Adding sealant will only piss off the next tech that has to replace the gasket in the future. lol
@nickyokley9745
@nickyokley9745 4 года назад
DaytonCarCare would applying sealant all the way around potentially cause a leak? I replaced them and applied a thin bead of sealant all the way around and they are leaking again.

@fcpeuro 2 года назад
You can always give a local dealership a call with your VIN number to learn the motor code of your V6. There are multiple engine codes for this model motor. Most B5 Passat's are found with motor code AHA & ATQ. For Audi A4's with this motor it ranges from AMX, APR, AQD, ATX, and AZR. For Audi A6's with this motor it ranges from AAH, AEJ, AFC, ACK, AGE, ALG as well as the motor codes found in the A4's & Passat's.
