VW T4 Eurovan won't start due to gear selector? This could get you home.

2001 Volkswagen Eurovan VR6 Automatic wouldnt start due to gear selector interlock. I accidentally found you can bypass the interlock by opening the relay 175 case and making a connection manually which starts the car so long as key is in start position and gets you home . Culprit was faulty gear selector module on the side of the transmission.

Great, Thanks, your video is the only place that shows where that relay actually is. Also, check to make sure that the passenger seat is locked in place and facing forward. The eurovan will not start if it is not locked in place.

Thanks for this, mine was the inhibitor switch that sits in the gearlever housing. The end had snapped of so would not engage the switch in P or N 👍

@@caseypage2 if yours is an automatic, then it's on the gear selector. Remove the hex bolt that holds the top part of the selector and then remove the plastic housing. It's a quite large switch on the side of the selector. There's a right angle bit of plastic that had snapped away from mine, I glued it back on and it's still working 👍

Thank you!! Yes the relay is really wedged in there! 1. Do you think the starter relay caused limp mode, or the neutral safety switch (related to gear indication) on the side of the transmission that caused limp mode? 2. Anyone know what the other relays are that are hidden under the stereo? My repair manual doesn't mention them. Bless

I believe on ours it was an issue with the neutral safety switch (095 919 823F) but can't be sure as this was years and many problems ago.

It’s called the multifunction switch or sometimes gearbox control. There are 2 types and later T4’s are the easy one to get. The plugs are different. Not sure if you can rewire and early one to fit a later switch.
