You’ve probably already established this by now but you should definitely be running green fluid, I learnt the hard way! The red stuff eats seals in the t4 and I went through 2 steering racks leaking fluid into the boots before I realised but in all fairness it was done by a garage at that the time who just added normal ATF fluid without checking which eventually killed them 👍🏼

Yea that made me whince! I use Fuchs Titan CHF 11S (green)

Hi Joel, great video and it also had others highlight the differences in fluid Colour. I’m about to sort this issue on a friends van and find all of this informative. My only suggestion to others attempting this would be to degrease the engine before starting the job! Always much nicer not getting so filthy. Well done!

Bought an old T4 recently with a faulty pump, this video has definitely saved me some money and is getting me knowing my van more! Cheers

Joel, if i hadn't seen this video I would have been very stuck. I had the same issue with my new pump having a different size union bolt in the new pump, so I swapped it for the old one, just as you did. Thank you amigo :)

Best way to do this is pretty much the same, except, have both wheels off the ground (not on ramps). When the pump is taken off and while the high pressure line is not connected, turn the steering wheel from full lock to full lock left to right a few times to bleed the rack of the old fluid. When you refill, do the same to get the new fluid in and the air out. Do not let the pump run dry when you top it up and start the engine.

another nice video joel and if it wasnt for it i wouldnt have known about the difference between green and red fluids either so its great that the community are sharing their knowledge on here. watching this really makes me wanna adjust your driver door though, that swaige line not lining up is really annoyying me🤣

Me too! I tried a few years back to bend and weld it back to the right position but gave up 🤓

@@JoelsStuff bend and weld? There's quite a lot of adjustment on the doors without having to do that, how come you were having to reweld?

Great video Joel, I’ve done the same and the results were night and day. I think you might be using the wrong fluid though. You have the same reservoir as me with a green top but you filled up with red fluid. To my small amount of knowledge on this topic there are two types of fluid and they are distinguishable by their colour, red and green. (There are tanks with red tops). Mixing the two together can cause premature wear on the seals within the pump. I made this mistake before I looked into a bit before I changed the pump. Might be worth doing a little research to see if you come to the same conclusion, if so it’s simply enough to flush the system through with fresh green fluid. Let me know your thoughts.

The power steering fluid looks to be red which, with your van having a green cap on the PS reservoir, is incorrect. The correct fluid is CHF11S. I noticed another T4 youtuber also had red fluid in his reservoir with a green cap. Different seals are used and if the incorrect fluid is used it basically eats the seals. How is the steering rack? Any signs of leaks? Are you topping up the power steering fluid often? When my rack needed replacing due to leaking the bellows on the track rods was full of power steering fluid.

Thanks for pointing this out, another viewer also commented on this. I have no issues but will get it sorted out!

When I had my van it had this exact issue. Had van at a low price because of this. It cost me the price of a steering rack and I fitted myself and drained and replaced with CHF now low and behold pump has gone now too.

Hi Joel, love your videos. I’ve just bought a T4 which is, mechanically sound sort from the steering. What Orontes you to change the pump? Mine is really juddery at low revs and often won’t turn at all without a lot of effort. The MOT garage said is was a knackered rack. I’m not convinced. Think I’ll try the pump first. Thanks

My steering pipe holes is kinda different from yours, the pipe collecting oil from the oil tank above is tied by bolt not clip, am tired of changing pumps all the time, it doesn't last

hey, i have the similiar problem, pump makes noise, left lots of oil and streering is very hard and scratchy. So i bought a new Pump the right green Oil and try to change it today but then i was wondering that i have no oil filter too and nowhere i found an ad for a new one or a picture of that missing oil filter may it be possible that there must be no filter in the cup? Does anyone knows if its important and if so where i can get it sorry for my bad english, not my native language hope you understood anyway.

Do you know if its possible to fit an air compressor pump for aircon within the pulley near the power steering pump?

I think I might have a go at this. My van is same age and engine as yours. I have an intermittent whine and groan when steering. Is that what you had? I think my pump is on way out as my belt is fairly recent.
@JoelsStuff
@JoelsStuff 2 года назад
That sounds exactly like what mine was doing (and it is now fixed). The job really is as easy as it looks. Only issue is getting stiff bolts loose, but that’s usually easy with the right tools. Good luck!

@@JoelsStuff Thanks! And thanks for the video's! I'm not that mechanically minded so it's been super useful seeing your videos. I was just about able to change gear bushings, the pump may be a bit too much but I'll try!

I'm having a problem getting my Power Steering pump off to allow me to get to the remaining bolts on the sump. I've undone the pulley and 3 bolts holding the pump to the bracket but the 4th one is absolutely solid and won't move. I've tried the penetrating oil and left it to soak but still not moving. Does anybody have any dynamite?
