How to change the fuel filter on a 1999 Volkswagen T4 Transporter 1.9 Turbo Diesel.
DUE TO ISSUES WITH A RECENT BATCH OF FEBI BILSTEIN FUEL FILTERS I WILL NOT BE USING THEM AGAIN. I AM NOW USING BOSCH FUEL FILTERS.

Great tip! I am about to do exactly this as my T4 came out of a tunnel yesterday and lost power completely. After pulling to the side of the road it turns but doesn't start so fingers crossed its the filter. Thanks for this!

Hi Matt, hope you get it fixed, if it is the filter that is causing fuel starvation at least it will be an easy fix, let me know how you get on.

Was looking for this operation. Informative, clear and just overall excellent. Subbed too.

Just spent well over an hr on this job. My unexpected issues.. jubilee clip screws were super stiff. Took about 10 tries on each to remove. Next the filter was very hard to get out, needed a hammer! Replacement filter was a different brand and had less space for the return value to sit, the metal surround didn't allow it to sit into place, so I had to find pliers to fashion it outwards to fit. Next, old filter had proper gunk in, so couldn't transfer to new filter. Fitted it empty, have cranked the van for 20-30 mins on and off. Van is now broken down 🥴. Weird thing is I can fuel in the fuel line going right up to the fuel pump, but it still won't start. I suppose the positive is I'm close to home so shouldn't take too much to sort this tomorrow when it's light. So for anyone reading please ensure you get the right fuel filter that actually matches the original & if your not doing this in daylight, use a good torch & use gloves too, or you'll get fuel all over the hands.

Sounds like there is air in the system, always best to tape the fuel lines out of the way to stop them draining and to ensure the filter is filled with diesel before fitting. You can always fill the filter with Liqui Moly Diesel Purge instead of diesel, I did this last time and it works a treat. If you are not using a genuine VW fuel filter I would only recommend the Febi Bilstein or Bosch fuel filters, I have used them for the past 13 years on my van without issue. Also, not a good idea to pour diesel from the old filter into the new filter if that is what you were attempting, always use fresh fuel. Hope you get the van running again.

Mine was a complete arse last time this was done. Had to vacuum diesel through with a hand pump to get it going again. Glad I took it to the garage to get done lol.

Oh no, did you suspend the pipes to stop the fuel leaking out?

I always turn the ignition on and off 3 times after to prime up, then run for 5 minutes this ensures all the air is out of the system

Hi, this is very helpful as ill be tackling this job on the weekend. Before i do so, i've been advised to prime the filter with injector cleaner (Redex / Wynn's etc) filling completely, cranking engine over a few times and then leaving overnight. Will this be advisable / benneficial ?
@T4TipsGuides
@T4TipsGuides 7 лет назад
If I was to clean the injectors I would build a rig and run 500ml of liqui moly through. This would bypass the fuel filter and would recirculate the liqui moly, a small inline fuel filter is used to stop the crud from the injectors going back through. Rig costs about £5 to build, I might make a video showing how this is done, just need the weather to improve!

If you don't fill the filter before fitting it. Does that cause more problems?
@T4TipsGuides
@T4TipsGuides 8 лет назад
It may take longer to start, or it may start then cut out, I always fill before fitting that way I don't have any problems.

We bought a filtre which didn't fit correctly. Failed to fill the filtre which didn't end well. Re filled the new filtre and primed the pump. All good. Thanks for your video. Works fine now.

Is it necessary to top up the filter?
@T4TipsGuides
@T4TipsGuides 7 лет назад
I have always filled the filter with diesel, this way there should be no interruption to the fuel supply.

What would happen if the drain valve was not closed? Would it still start?
@T4TipsGuides
@T4TipsGuides 5 лет назад
Hi, I added that comment to the video as one time I received a fuel filter and the drain valve was open, if I hadn't checked if it was closed diesel would have poured straight out the bottom of the filter.

im getting air in my fuel line between the fuel filter and pump. the van starts just fine but as you increase the revs more air is drawn in. i think it could be the white piece of plastic on top of the fuel filter not making a good seal. i had a crash on the corner of the driver side (where the fuel pump is) ive seen 2 drop of red fluid drop will i believe is hydraulic fluid any help or tests i can run would be greatfull

Hi Vinnie, sorry to hear you are having problems with your bus, the part you need for the fuel filter is a "Diesel Fuel Filter Thermo Valve T Piece, VW Part Number 191127247A, you can buy a Febi Bilstein equivilent for around half the price of the VW genuine part, the Febi part number is 02087. As for the drips, I am afraid I do not know what that could be, sorry. Hope you get it sorted. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the advice i've ordered an Thermo Valve and i'll put a new filter on while i'm there might aswell for the cost. Also found and injector pump with new seals for £25 so i'm buying it even if i never have to fit it :)
@T4TipsGuides
@T4TipsGuides 7 лет назад
That is good to know, I have a box full of spares. The thermo valve has two o rings that form a seal, these can shrink, dry out, crack after time. Always best to replace the valve and seals and the same time. Smear a bit of diesel on the o rings before fitting.
