In this video I cover a windscreen rust repair on my VW T4. My T4 high top had rust around the windscreen surround since I purchased it and I knew it the windscreen would need to be removed to see how bad it is. I had the windscreen removed on insurance with a new screen scheduled for fitting a few days later to allow rust repair time on the windscreen surround. Autoglass removed the screen which thankfully revealed a surround that although had surface rust, it didn't need any new metal welding in, so I remove all visible rust, treat the areas and paint with Rustoleum paint. Once the new windscreen is fitted the windscreen area should now remain rust free for years to come.

i agree with some of the comments and i was a fitter with autoglass for 8 years and it is really important to prime and paint the surface of the aperature to at least factory specs, i would personally put 2 coats primer and 3 top coats on, the primer that is put on before bonding the screen in is an adhesion promoter and offers virtually no rust protection so if you see any rust coming through get them out and get it removed so you can do the job properly, when i was with them they had a lifetime warranty on all work carried out and if this is still true dont be shy in getting the job rectified

Hi mate. Just a quick thumbs up and thanks for posting this. I've got a T4 too, and this also needs repair work around the screen. Like some other comments, I'm surprised the windscreen chap wouldn't let you treat the area. But as you say, we can only listen to the pros. I just wondered if you are planning on polishing the rust oleum paint? Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming buddy👍

Hi thanks for the comment. I think they say don't treat/paint because they cannot be sure what is used and some products may be inferior so best listen. Yeah I plan on polishing up the paint, the final shots were filmed with 1 coat all over the van, currently done coat 2 with 2 more to go with videos to come once finished

Looking back at this job 6 years later, is there anything you would do differently?

No, but I’ve not owned this van for many years now so I dont know how it’s holding up so many years later

Any time you go bare metal prime it with 2k epoxy primer then some 2k paint, if you do not have a spray gun then at least apply the epoxy primer with brush or roller but please use it and stop using paints that do not have hardenerand are not 2k. the only place the 1k paints are good for on a car is on inside of your wheel wells to make it black again on top of the original protection. Oh and there is rust still there on top of the windscreen under the railing where it meets the roof, i just did mine and did have to cut and rebuild it all as you can not buy the parts.

I don't understand , so is your windscreen man thinking windscreens are fitted at the factory to bare metal ? Surly windscreens are fitted on top of paint . I think your windscreen man is talking out the top of his head ( polite version ).

Thats what the guy from Autoglass said, probably because I was on about applying some Kurust to it to protect it but he said don't do that as they wouldn't then fit the screen and best just to leave it bare as they treat it themselves before applying the bond and screen

Ok fair enough i just have a vision of us all running around with glass on bare metal , ha . Looking good.

I can't imagine that their windscreen bonding compound will cover all of the bare metal so I would personally at least paint it before the windscreen is refitted. As you say, from new the windscreen is bonded to a painted surface and not to the bare metal.

I wanted to rust treat and paint it all but you can only go off professional advice when it's given and this is what they said

Sounds like they say that just to keep the business going - no rust treatment = more customers returning to refit their windows... Capitalism.
