TSI TECHNOLOGY
Following the success of its TDI and FSI engines, Volkswagen is launching the latest in a line of pioneering inventions with the introduction of TSI petrol technology.
FSI uses the direct injection of petrol into the combustion chamber to improve efficiency and hence reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Taking this further, TSI uses -- for the first time ever -- an FSI engine which is then dual-charged through a combination of an engine driven supercharger and an exhaust gas turbocharger arranged in series.
The driving characteristics of the new TSI engine are improved over those of the current FSI unit. The belt-driven supercharger operates at the lower engine speeds, with the turbocharger coming in as engine speed increases. The result of this is excellent driveability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque.
Key to the TSI's success is that direct injection allows an abnormally high compression ratio of 10:1 to be used in conjunction with high maximum boost pressure of up to 2.5 bar absolute. This enables the relatively small engine to use very high gearing to provide exceptional fuel efficiency for a petrol engine, particularly at motorway cruising speeds. As an additional bonus, the TSI engine provides driver enjoyment, producing high power and torque across a rev range from 1,000 to 6,500 rpm.
The new TSI engine has a capacity of 1.4-litres (1,390 cc) and produces either 140 or 170 PS. The 170 PS version has the same peak power as a conventional 2.3-litre petrol unit but with 20 per cent lower fuel onsumption, returning 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle. It also produces impressive torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) from 1,750 through to 4,500 rpm. All TSI engines drive through a manual six-speed gearbox. A DSG automatic option is also available with the 170 PS engine. This will be offered later in the year with the 140 PS unit.
TSI technology has already received international acclaim, having been named Best New Engine of 2006 in the International Engine of the Year Awards. It also won the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category.

I have owned a 1.8 tsi Jetta for five months, purchased new. - exceptional performance, in particular the torque delivery, behaves like a midsize V-8 - exceptional fuel economy, I drive 120 kms/day, round trip. Average fuel economy typically mid-5-liter/100 kilometres - extremely happy with the all-around package of performance/handling/build quality On the down side, car is in getting a clutch problem diagnosed under warranty. Intermittent chattering, not related to driver error. Also, having previous experience with turbos, purchased extended warranty (to 200,000) in case turbo technology isn't sustainable over the long term.

I own vw gold mk 6 1.4 TSI 118 KW 2010 with less than 100k on the clock and I have low compression in the cylinder 4 and misfiring. I just rang VW Australia and they said the car is out of the warranty, so you are on your own. Great service and reliability VW!

oh, and audi a4, a6, a8, passat and exeo's frontwheel suspention is amazings cool, just to look at, a 4 link system, witch allows variable wheel angles when the wheel turn. i can't express my self en how the escribe the effect. but it's a race car type suspention. it has spare holes, to adjust the wheel angle, even the link bar from the steering looks cool and technical. i have repaired an accidental vihicle and was required to change the part with the wheel bearing and a new wheel. amazing!
@naturalyshocked

all cars should be build like that. you can even add 4 wheel drive if you find a donor car on the scrap yard. you need the gearbox, the rear axle system(subframe with differantial and suspention). voila, a beast that takes tight curves on town road like it's cheese, i have done 200+km/h+ (friend's '98 audi a8) on a land road with the 2 right wheel in the mud, that smal the road was for 2 car to pas. it's superbly safe personal race car for daily use. i wish all cars where like these ...

there is a chain to control the the second camshaft, the one for the outlet ports. on the front side there is a belt, but it only drives the inlet shaft. the 2.5,... tdi has 2 of these chaints. 125ps for a 1800 is good number, else it would endanger other models. i think for the aluminium head, it's a real good number. the 125ps version has some of the parts required for the turbo version, already build in. there is a tube under the radiator for the intercooler

It depends on the initial cost of the vehicle. It takes a long time to recoup the extra initial cost in fuel savings. You may wear the car out long before the fuel savings matches the extra cost of the car. If you are looking at just economics you have to look at the total cost to own the vehicle. I think Yahoo gives this cost for vehicles. Civic is probably at the top for cheapest cars to own.

The supercharger enhances airflow into the engine, making a purer air fuel mix, reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. The turbocharger makes use of waste exhaust gas to improve power output, therefore making even more use out of the fuel.

i know, that smal civic vtec from the crx did that. but that was an exeption. the normal civic with vtec was, if i remember correct 110ps. but it's a high rpm machine, i think contineu racing trafficlights, wil get boring, the engine noise, although it sound pretty sweet. but how long with it last? a 6000+ rmp machine against a relax running 2.0 engine. like i said, you need fast 0-100km/h and when possible, with no noise, you don't want that people can hear you comming.

this is different than GDI engines. this engine can 'regarding it's mode' run on a ultra lean mixture, much less than the 1 to 14.x required optimal mixture. per combustion stroke it injects 2 different mixtures a rich and a lean around the rich mixture, preventing the engine to get hot and burn every last particle of gasonline.

The interior quality suffers, I know, but I bought this car for the sole purpose of sporty driving, and, trust me, it delivers spectacularly. currently producing 125bhp and 200nm of torque when I chip-tune it, it will be 158bhp and 270nm. can't wait.

why is 5 valve unsuccesfull, i once removed the cam shafts to exchange the chain on them, a 20v 1800 engine - a4. i was amazed about the cams angel on the 3 inlet valves(they vary), smaller and therefor closer build, it's not that complex, it has a total accetable build quality. hydraulic valve adjust. the more valve, the more air effortly get's in, better vaporization of the fuel. yahama uses it on his bikes, do you think they also wrong¿?

no, never drove it, but i did repair a volvo 850 t5 estate, police in holland used it. the police in the U.K. also. it's a car for salesman on the road. (due to economical reasons), i have a '94 vectra 2.5 24v stocked, a engine designed by coswordt, 5 speed gearbox, only 170hp and something like 2100 pounds in weight, it's a rocked. 4 cyl with gearbox, are better for the 50km/h speed limit stop and go traffic makes a 5-6-8 cyl engine lazy, to much gear change or drive high rpm in 2nd gear.

we littaraly race in the cities. it's to crowded for the policia to function probaly in order to do something about it. but going like 80km/h where 50 is alowed is not uncommen here in rush hour. on the highway it's 'somewhat' publicly accepted to drive 140, where 120 is alowed. i don't think you would be beabled to drive here on your first day, without getting scared. i can asure you, it's scary as a passanger. it goes hard here on the roads.

the old citroen AX 1100 was caple of getting faster to 70km/h than a bmw 750. litle fast cars are real fun to 'rally' in. bigger cars are more dangerous to drive sporty, because of the weight in the cornes. litle cars are fun, you don't need speed, you need fast 0-100km/ times. i think that0's the most importand factor in european minds

These TSI engines are now suffering from a lot of major engine failures at low mileage too. Timing chain problems and piston/ring problems.VW has pushed the envelope too far and unfortunately the consumer is paying the price.Avoid at all cost. This engine is a liability. (depending on how i get it, i overhaul this or the other, but wheel bearings, axles and suspention wil be overhauled. i have been thinking about this cars for over atleast 3 year the dsp is cool, it's slighly faster from 0 to 100km/h.

why, many 2.0 engine are tuned for economy and don't even reach 150hp(atleast in that time). marking technical, it's a good number. 1600 engine did around 90hp in that .... why, vw, still sells 5 valve engine. the only mistake, i might see here, that it is more exspensive, it need more parts and interruptions of the production line, to build others.

(in mostly) hmm i never saw those result in consumption in normal car 2.9 liter per 100km.. what car and engine ?

well what can I say. Buy a turbocharged benzin engine... but if someone think that it will be economical (especially in street race) so he is wrong I like small and light cars too but not for journeys or normal race - bigger cars are more stable especially when u drive fast (about 160-200km/h) and are safer, small cars are ok but in the city..

pfff clearly you have never seen a ford focus rs with 301 bhp from an 2.5 liter .. the thing with hp per liter is devious, because how much of that power do you have avaliable at any given time? ... despite all that I love turbos, they make for slower engines than NA but I love my 1.8T when it wooshes away ..

Problems: The engine exhaust 1000 times more particles than a modern diesel engine with particulate filters [TV germany: "VOX auto mobil", 26.01.2014]. Over the EGR comes the particles to the intake side and pollute the inlet valves. The exhausts get more and more toxic and the engine can fail. This is an gradual process and a expensive problem for the car owner.

Not anymore. The new EA888 1.8TSI and 2.0TSI has the traditional injectors in the inlet manifold and also direct injectors in the head. The inlet injectors will clean the backside of the inlet valves...

The tsi is answer to yesterdays requirements not tomorrows requirements. Most of advances are evolutionary not revolutionary. Tomorrows requirements are engnies that get better thermal effecncey than fuel cells. high Torqure

because more than 4 valeves per cylinder is using in high RPM engines (bikes ect) who gives u power in very high RPM, In normal engines where u need a max torque available as low as possible more than 4 valves gives u nothing and put the max torque very high what is not economical and uncomfortable Like u see the Japanese who put 4 valeves per Cylinder (far before Germans start to do that) didn't put however a 5 valves per C. to cars engines ? guess why

@evydaemon Nothing wrong with the turbo on this engine, just muppets treating turbo like crap ie. not letting turbo cool down before turning off, revving the shit out of it when its cold and not bothering to change the oil. Whats not cost effective about this engine?the extra fuel you would use in a 3.0 l v6 could buy the car after three years.

enter audi 5 valve 2009 in google. the vectra does 7.3 or 7.5 to do 0-100km/h acelleration. (but you need to skilled with the gearbox, because it reaches 6000rpm realy fast and cuts off there, realy anoying if you having fun overtaken people on a 2 lane landroad. even thoug i realy enjoy engines, i recommend 4 cyl for daily use. it's just more practical. automatic sucks, unles it's a DSG, pdk or any other dual clutch system. witch acellerate faster and more efficient.
