This is me assembling a Type 3 engine with a 1600cc displacement off of a 1967 Volkswagen Squareback. About 80% of the parts used were restored from the original engine. 10% were new parts while I had to do a treasure hunt for the remaining hard-to-find parts.
Follow my build thread in the link below for more details. Lots and lots of pictures

Beautifully re-built. VW's design of attaching fan direct to crankshaft was clever - in case of fan-belt breakage, you can still drive till battery goes flat - unlike the Beetle. I had 2 Fastbacks, miss them dearly. Type 3's were unique in that they were VW's but without being VW's if that makes sense.

awesome video to get motivated to continue on my 69 1600 type 3 engine. I lost motivation a little over a year ago at around 1:50 because I felt like my piston rods weren't going round smooth. Even though tolerances were measured on the crank and the rods were machined. I will just stop worrying and finish building it. I will watch this video again at slower speed to see what steps I need to do next.

Yup! over the course of two years, I spent the majority restoring/repairing/sourcing parts and didn't record any of that. Disassembly and reassembly is quick. But parts are harder and harder to find for these.

@jeremydoc
@jeremydoc 4 года назад
I learned a lot from youtube; following several channels and learning about VW's from various sites such as TheSamba.com. I actually have my build thread for this in there, feel free to check it out. Link is in the description :D I also have 3 books, the first two of which I used heavily 1. Haynes Manual (haynes.com/en-us/volkswagen/type-3/1963-1973) 2. Bentley, Workshop Manual - My square is a 67, so I used the blue one. 68 and up use the brown bentley. www.bentleypublishers.com/volkswagen/repair-information/vw-type-3-manual-61-67-lpv800139.html) 3. How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen air-Cooled Engine (All models, 1961 and up) - This one was a bit too wordy for me. I liked the first two because they had a lot of pictures and exploded view diagrams. can a Type 3 motor be mated to a Beetle trans for use in a dune buggy or other such aftermarket application?
@jeremydoc
@jeremydoc Год назад
short answer, yes, type 1 and type 3 engine cases/transmissions can pretty much bolt up to each other. my spare transmission that I have laying around is off of a bug and I use it to mount a starter motor and bench test my engine. Just take note of the size of the starter bushing that's inside of the transmission though. I covered this on Episode 10 and 11 in my playlist. something to do with 6 volt and 12 volt differences i think. if that's all squared away, you should be all good.... the biggest thing is that the cooling aspect of the type 3 differs from the type 1 in that the type 1 has the doghouse shroud thing ontop and the type 3 has the cooling shroud in the front of the engine (opposite end of the flywheel). because of this, the type 3 engine may not be cooled properly on a buggy. I'm not sure, you may be okay since it's a lot more open back there for a dune buggy.

Maybe I didn't see it but no tinware under the barrels , it's there for a reason. Best thing to do on the carbs is disconnect the chokes , to much fuel washes the oil of the barrels, they start fine with them disconnected

@@bigears4426 Jeremy is not using stock Type -3 deflector tin under the barrels which is likely why you missed seeing it. He installed Type-1 deflector tin instead. That is the same tin I assemble all my Type-3 engines with as well. Type 3 deflector tin appears like it should cool better, at least on a Type-3 engine design. It does not. It is good for throwing as far as you can and not looking back.

I rebuilt an engine for a guy -sane type -when I had a small VW repair shop -could never get it started -in car -over at guys house -never could get it started -racked my brain going over everything by the book - removed engine -took back to my shop -totally disassembled -then re -assembled engine completely by the book ( yesrs of experience behind me ...) -kid’s parents ( he was 19 ) calling me numerous times a day threatening me over it not being done -REINSTALLED engine a second time -STILL could not get it to start to save my life ...ended up giving them all there money back -lost all my money on labor AND they got a new engine -that I paid for. -one of the worst damn experiences of my life. Glad that your engine worked -but I was ready to kill myself.
