Le Variazioni K. 398 nascono da un frammento dell'opera di Paisiello I filosofi immaginari - su libretto del Bertati - rappresentata nel 1777 a Pietroburgo dove Paisiello, l'anno prima, era stato chiamato da Caterina II, con l'incarico di direttore di corte e di supervisore dell'opera italiana, e dove il compositore soggiornò fino al 1784.
Tornando in Europa, Paisiello incontrò a Vienna Mozart il quale gli fece ascoltare le Variazioni. L'episodio è ricordato da Mozart stesso in una lettera.
Il tema e le variazioni si susseguono senza soluzione di continuità e con la caratteristica di non presentare mai alcun segno di ripetizione, di «daccapo». La prima variazione punta sulla mano destra e in un veloce «legato»; la seconda, prevalentemente su un rapido «staccato» di biscrome, dissolvente in una assorta rievocazione della seconda parte del tema. La terza mette in risalto la presenza della mano sinistra.
Dalla quarta variazione, il discorso si fa più movimentato e più elaborato. Al carattere quasi d'improvvisazione che emerge dalle prime tre, si sostituisce un lavorìo più minuzioso, e più ricco anche di soluzioni armoniche. Lo spazio si allarga e la musica spesso indugia in «cadenze» o è affidata (come nella quinta variazione) ai «trilli» i quali ripropongono soluzioni già sperimentate nel Rondò della Sonata K. 281. Un impeto di più deciso virtuosismo sostiene l'ultima variazione, che è la più ampia, e che porta, attraverso il clima fantastico di una imprevedibile «cadenza», alla ripresa del tema. Nelle ultime battute, è di straordinaria ricchezza espressiva il ribaltamento della struttura ritmica, la diversa accentuazione data da Mozart al tema di Paisiello. The Variations K. 398 arise from a fragment of Paisiello's opera The Imaginary Philosophers - with a libretto by Bertati - performed in 1777 in Petersburg where Paisiello, the year before, had been called by Catherine II, with the role of director of court and supervisor of Italian opera, and where the composer stayed until 1784.
Returning to Europe, Paisiello met Mozart in Vienna who made him listen to the Variations. The episode is remembered by Mozart himself in a letter.
The theme and the variations follow one another without interruption and with the characteristic of never showing any sign of repetition, of "all over again". The first variation focuses on the right hand and in a fast «legato»; the second, mainly on a rapid «staccato» of bisquavers, dissolving into an absorbed re-enactment of the second part of the theme. The third highlights the presence of the left hand.
From the fourth variation, the speech becomes livelier and more elaborate. The almost improvisational character that emerges from the first three is replaced by a more meticulous work, also richer in harmonious solutions. The space widens and the music often lingers in «cadences» or is entrusted (as in the fifth variation) to «trills» which propose solutions already experimented in the Rondo of Sonata K. 281. An impulse of more decisive virtuosity supports the last variation, which is the widest, and which leads, through the fantastic climate of an unpredictable "cadence", to the resumption of the theme. In the last bars, the reversal of the rhythmic structure and the different accentuation given by Mozart to Paisiello's theme are of extraordinary expressive richness.
Antonio Castagna graduated from IMP “G. Braga” of Teramo and, subsequently, he perfected himself with Maestro Franco Medori and Maestro Carlo Zecchi.
He has held numerous concerts and recitals in Italy and abroad (ARGENTINA, AUSTRIA, SOUTH KOREA, GERMANY, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, BELGIUM, HOLLAND, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, USA). He has participated several times in RAI radio and television programs.
He played in Salzburg as part of the Salzburger Schlosskonzerte and in Paris, at the Italian Cultural Institute, as part of the “Hommage à LA FIGIA DI JORIO” event.
He toured Basel for the Consulate General of Italy.
At the invitation of the Italian Cultural Institute, he played in BRAZIL, in Rio de Janeiro, in the prestigious National Museum of Fine Arts.
He played, with the Teramo Trio, in Philadelphia (USA) in the Marshall Auditorium of Haverford College, in the Lincoln Hall of the Union League.
He was Director, from 1996 to 2012, of the I.S.S.M "Gaetano BRAGA" of Teramo. He was a piano teacher at the Conservatories of Foggia and Teramo.
