I was a rural white kid growing up in 80's upstate New York. White people and Black people did not mix. I can genuinely say that the Cosby show was my first Black influence and my first positive Black influence growing up. It certainly didn't fix the racial issues of my town, but the Cosby show gave me and my parents the basic foundation that we are all people and we all want the same thing. And, it was up to us to build from there. It is complicated. I understand that Cosby is a symbol. And yet his actions are a horror in reality compared to the facade (much like Hollywood). This is one of the issues with tokenism. You have a greater chance of elevating false gods rather than recognizing people as individuals.

I really think we need to talk about men in general, and why this predatory behavior still keeps happening among all races, ethnicities, and religions of men. Rich men and poor, famous and not, huge numbers engage in blatantly abusing women in big ways and small. The truth is many men still feel that they have an inherent right to any woman’s body and that women are just less valuable than men. More men of color voted for trump in 2020 than in 2016, despite seeing his abusive behavior for four years, full of hate, racism, and endless misogyny and yet they were somehow okay with it while women of color didn’t vote for him and he got a lower percentage of white women’s vote than in 2016. Women all know that this behavior is rampant because we are all on the receiving end of it. Stop calling it ‘domestic violence’ when it’s male brutality. When it’s a woman who does it call it female brutality but we all know that it’s almost all men. I don’t hate all men but I am sick to my very soul of the endless abuse that I and my sisters face. It has to stop!

All I can say is... "celebrity" and talent, for that matter, is a wild thing. If any ordinary human being, man or woman, had dozens upon dozens of victims come forward saying their bodies had been manipulated and abused against their will... no one would question it. Only when it comes to celebrities, and particularly those who have made a major cultural or racial impact through their talent, do we pause our reality and search for all sorts of justifications and analyses.

In the midst of the Cosby scandal, I saw a clip of the entire Huxtable family singing a Ray Charles tribute to their grandparents. Not only was it my favorite episode of the Cosby show, imo it was rare and incredible moment in TV. Moreover, it was probably one the only times where I saw my family traditions reflected on TV- I was like “hey! We do stuff like that!” I will always appreciate and cherish the work and the ground work that Cosby laid. It was a part of my childhood, and it really was a blessing. For that he was vilified by some haters in said community because they didn’t want to or weren’t ready to make that change. I have nothing but respect for Mr. Cosby. I admire Bill Cosby, but was never so wrapped up in him as a person outside of his character, that my life ended when I heard the news. I didn't feel a loss or a disappointment. If people will quit making celebrities their Gods and role models, then this wouldn't be a discussion. And this goes for Bill, Harvey, and all of those who the Hollywood world is keeping their secrets for right now, only to wait until they are exposed to say, "I knew it all along." R. Kelly, Hollywood stars knew and said nothing. Now five years after his death, Hugh Hefner is going under, people knew and said nothing. I blame the people who knew, and said nothing for allowing this to go on so long. Not attacking the survivors, but the people in his space seeing it happened and not calling it out.

But a bunch of us saw him as a role model. He had kid shows before I was born that were still airing when I was a toddler to middle school. Kids idolize. Picture Pages. Fat Albert. Pudding Pops. Then, in college, someone loaned me recordings from his records. It was a whole new side of him. But it was a ruse. We’re having a conversation like this one about other people. How do we separate the people who founded the United States from slaveownership?
@Karen-pk3uv
@Karen-pk3uv 2 года назад
Are you actually interested in this conversation or are you asking a rhetorical question?
@koshersalaami
@koshersalaami 2 года назад
@@Karen-pk3uv This is an actual question. I have my own answer but I’m not completely comfortable with it, it’s not a complete answer, and I’m not sure I’d be comfortable with any answer because every solution leaves major problems. We get stuck with this question a lot: What do we do about people who did great things and also did terrible things, particularly when we still benefit from the great things they did? Washington and Madison were slaveowners but basically gave us the United States as we know it. Throwing them out completely throws out too much else. Cosby’s case is complicated by the fact that so many of his victims are living. For Confederate generals it’s easy: Everything they accomplished was in support of two fundamentally bad things: slavery and treason. My answer is to teach it all. If you teach about Washington you teach about both aspects of Washington in all its detail. You teach about the fact that Jefferson spoke out against slavery but didn’t take his objection seriously enough to free his own slaves, so let’s not give credit for lip service. The problem we’re running into at the moment is interference around the country with actual historical teaching. This is showing up big time with Critical Race Theory which absolutely is NOT about Whites Are Evil but is being treated as though it were. It’s difficult but necessary to insure to the extent that we can that our education falls on neither facile whitewashing nor facile PC. Reality is complex. Teach it.

I loved his great bits like Noah & the Ark, Chicken Heart and Fat Albert playing Buck-Buck. I watched the original Bill Cosby Show (where he played Chet Kincaid) and, of course, the cartoon Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids. That's the Bill Cosby I choose to remember. I hate that another of my childhood memories has been ruined by Cosby's all too common human failure of not being able to handle mega-success.
