This lecture will cover basic laboratory work on inflammatory mediators in atheroma and cells involved in plaques that formed the basis for large-scale clinical trials that established inflammation as a participant in human atherosclerosis and as a therapeutic target in this disease. The topic will highlight the practical clinical implications of decades of exploration of this topic.
1. To review the inflammatory process involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
2. To illustrate the role of inflammation as a common driver of cardiometabolic risk that links diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis.
3. To discuss clinical trials targeting inflammation in cardiovascular diseases.
