Interesting! I guess this is before Warner Wolf adopted his catchphrase, "Let's go to the videotape!" I also think Larry Kane went to Philadelphia soon after this. I remember him as a Philadelphia anchorman, although I could be wrong, as we got stations from both cities when I was growing up in NJ.

New York may be the bigger market but Larry Kane should have stayed at Channel 6 in Philly. Action News in Philadelphia has always been the best local news program.

As a commenter suggested in a CBC Hockey Night discussion page, we lost some of our decorum along the way when they started putting advertising on the boards.

Appearing in the Dollar Savings Bank ad was Ron Masak, who later played Sheriff Metzger on "Murder, She Wrote."
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 5 лет назад
I remember that commercial! However, because of a potential bank failure, Dollar Savings Bank merged with Dry Dock Savings in 1983, becoming "Dollar Dry Dock Savings Bank". In 1992, financial mismanagement forced the New York State Banking Department to seize the company; Emigrant Savings Bank bought the majority of their branches as a result. The original Dollar Savings Bank went out of business in 2004.

WABC-TV didn't like Larry Kane. They were jealous of him. He was good... very good. He was from Philly and wasn't allowed to joke with the NY upper crust. 01:57 Warner Wolf gets annoyed and puts Larry "in his place." Larry got tired of being ostracized and was welcomed back home to Philadelphia where he worked CBS and NBC flag-stations WCAU 10 and KYW 3.

New York City is pothole compared to other markets. It may be number but that "New York Arrogance" shines through its TV stations like you were in a men's room hearing nothing but gossip in between toilet flushes!
@wmbrown6

You sure it was WABC management? I know Kane was often at loggerheads with 6 P.M. co-anchor Roger Grimsby, for sure . . . at least he made it to New York. Ron Hunter never got that chance. After Chicago, for him it was all downhill. However, there was some scuttlebutt from what I read in a New York magazine article about him commuting from Bucks County to New York during his time at Channel 7.

First sports story: Rangers and Flyers skating to a 2-2 tie. However, things would start changing as concerns regular-season hockey endings... In 1983, they added a 5-minute OT period. In 1999, they gave one point to each team if regulation ended in a tie, and then the 5-minute OT went 4-on-4. And in 2006(still in effect today), they added the shootout if the 5-minute overtime is still tied. Now, NO regular season game ends in a tie!

My mom met Spencer Christian about 25+ years ago when she was working at a rest area on the GSP she mistook him for Reggie Jackson. How'd you end up owning the resturaunt Jerry? Easy, money laundering, the joint's a mob front(I'm part Italian before anyone gets butthurt). I owned a 78 Cutlass, I miss that damn car.

I like Larry Kane, but man oh man was he NOT a fit for the station at the time. While the rest of the station was doing Eyewitness News, he was doing Action News. This was in the days when they were two incredibly different formats - Action News was speedy, hyperfast delivery, while Eyewitness News was relaxed, personality driven news. I mean, the differences are clear just when you listen to their respective THEME SONGS!
