Hello, I enjoyed the video. I have a question. Why did I put gravel inside a Wabikusa ball and is the coconut fiber the right material for plants to spread their roots?
@JurijsJutjajevs
@JurijsJutjajevs 4 месяца назад
It’s explained in the video, but in short the pebbles add additional weight, in case the balls will ever be transitioned into a submersed setup (used for planting aquariums) as this will prevent the ball from floating up due to uplift from plants. Coconut fiber is great for plant roots and is sold as potting soil due to its excellent attributes.

Pumice in the original may be power sand actually, it has a lot of nutrients for plants
@microcox
@microcox 4 месяца назад
Wondered about that too. A ball made of pure coco fiber wouldn't have any nutrients in it?
@JurijsJutjajevs
@JurijsJutjajevs 4 месяца назад
Power Sand is 99% pumice. The newer basic or advance versions have „organic“ component which is basically peat moss, which has similar amount of nutrients as coco fiber. I doubt ADA is using the superior version of power sand that has additional additives in it. However, there is no need for large amount of nutrients in the substrate of the wabi-kusa ball. The reason is they are cultivated in a hydroponic like system and all nutrients are provided through the water column or spraying. This way gardeners have control over the growth speed. Same with potted plants in big plant nurseries like Tropica or Dennerle Plants. Potted plants are cultivated in rock wool that has 0 nutrients in it.
@microcox
@microcox 4 месяца назад
If there's still time to add that to the next video, I feel like we lack your perspective on why there shouldn't be any nutrients in the ball. Anyway, very cool video and perfect timing for me 😅
@JurijsJutjajevs
@JurijsJutjajevs 4 месяца назад
I don’t think nutrients compounds are bad, they are simply not necessary if cultivated in a hydroponic environment. Anything with crushed soil will be messy, and other materials are more likely to rot and develop a nasty smell

@@JurijsJutjajevs yes, I’ve already watched! Just one question…how do you adds nutrients to your wabi-kusa ball, just into the water?
@JurijsJutjajevs
@JurijsJutjajevs 4 месяца назад
I dose 1ml APT 3 (compete) in 500ml of water and pour it on top of the ball after weekly cleaning. In addition I spray them during the week 1-2 times with APT DEW (foliage spray) that also has nutrients in it. Meanwhile after few weeks all plants have rooted and I have roots tangling under the ball. They suck in nutrients from the water. And coco fiber isn’t completely empty in nutrients. It’s just not as rich as ie aquasoil

Interesting, the ones I made have done amazing. But like you said I’ve never seen one from Japan. Seems like a lot less nutrients in coco fiber. But I’ll try this way next time I’m making them. Thanks for the tutorial.

I’m not saying other ways, recipes, don’t work. But they have several disadvantages imo.
@jonisolis9645
@jonisolis9645 4 месяца назад
Instead of plain water you could soak the coco fiber in a fertilizer water mix. That is what I would consider doing. Do not make the mix too strong as it can cause a delay in getting the stems to root.
@JurijsJutjajevs
@JurijsJutjajevs 4 месяца назад
Letting the balls dry out and soaking them in a water nutrient mix is a good idea 👍 in my case I added water nutrient mix into the aquarium, so ball will soak up evaporated water with nutrients and I give the plants a regular spray with APT Dew
