Owner Tamiko decided to downsize her home after tragically losing her husband. With her kids grown up, she no longer needed the space and the opportunity opened up for her to build a laneway house on the Vancouver (BC) property of her mother, brining the family closer together.
Find out more about this tiny house and others on our website: www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com...
The house, designed by Tamiko’s brother-in-law, architect incorporates elements of wabi-sabi (the world view of acceptance of imperfection) and Japanese design, drawing from Tamiko’s Japanese heritage. The home was designed and built with a lot of love and attention to detail creating a very special place for her to call home and begin a new life.
I hope you enjoy the full video tour of this very special home.

Between the loss of her husband, friend, and her kids leaving the nest, it sounds like she's had to endure a lot of seismic shifts in rapid succession, yet her warm and welcoming demeanor have remained strong. Wonderful to see her thriving in a space that I hope has brought a renewed sense of consistency to her life.

I love how she credited the Architect, interior designer and contractor for their hard work, such a lovely humble sweet woman...i dont usually see a lot of them doing this in real life. I am a huge fan of this channel and would request Bryce to mention the architect and design team atleast once, even as written text, cause even though the client initiates the idea and funds this, the houses are design team’s child, when we appreciate beautiful architecture who should also appreciate the hands that raised them, a little motivation & appreciation goes a long way.

While your point is well taken and spot on, many of the homes Bryce features are designed, and often built, by the owners. Many of them are DIY or they work with a friend, or family member who shows them how. I feel that he typically does a great job giving credit to the people involved.

I really enjoy all these episodes but THIS one had so much more meaning to it for me. She talked about her grief and transitioning from the home she shared with her late husband, and the way she expressed what was important to her in her living space was quite personal. Plus, the way the home was connected to her mom’s house was so special. 👏🏾👏🏾❣️

@@janetwalker3541 that's true where buying a house is concerned, but less so when building on already owned land. Property costs vary wildly from place to place, but building materials and labor costs are more uniform. There probably are fairly wide variations in permit and inspection fees in different areas, but I doubt it amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars. I still say half a million is pretty pricy for such a small house, no matter WHERE you build it, especially if the property is already owned.

I always wander why people don't by an appartment in a condo when the objective was a smaller footprint. An appartment in a bigger house consumes less ground space and less heating and it is more affordable. I think tiny houses where ground space is precious are about self-fullfillment. I also think that the treasure box in this clip is doing a great job at it.

@@Coromi1If you have lived in a large single-family home most of your life it's difficult to transition to a shared apartment building with the possibility of noisy neighbors, and less privacy. Apartments don't give you a personal garden space or a private backyard, which many people love. It's understandable why many don't enjoy the idea of a living in a 2 story condo building or something similar. Personally, I have strong anxiety living in apartments, but that may be because I grew up in my families quiet ranch-style home.

@@Coromi1 condo, strata rules aren't for everyone. 2 bedroom condos of abt 7-800 sq ft cost over a million already, plus you have to pay strata fees etc. Vancouver is a very expensive place to live in, the reason why the city allowed lane way homes is for homeowners to make it a mortgage helper if they choose to rent it out.
@Coromi1
@Coromi1 4 года назад
First, I am happy for the lady in the clip and I think it is a wonderful tiny home. But let's look at the bigger perspective. Ground is scarce and valuable in Vancouver. How should society organize it? Clutter all scarce green spots with tiny homes? Gardens are important for the city climate (heat, air pollution), for rain water to trickle into the ground, for animals and life quality in general. It is better organization to built appartment buildings where you can place more people on limited ground. You can do better insulation and more efficient heating. And you can built high quality buildings with good sound insulation and pleasant looks. Also, please look at the even bigger perspective - the most important one. I don't know about Canada, I am German. In Germany and the US, neoliberal ideology has turned large parts of the country into wastelands without jobs, money, doctors, culture and without hope. Now we have inner-country fugees who flee the economic and cultural wastelands in favour of few prosperous cities. There is no way - not tiny homes and not appartment buildings - to create enough homes for all those people. The nescessary solution is to reverse the downward spiral of large parts of the country. "The markets" won't do that.

People seem to have a problem with the house costing so much and not being tiny enough, but I think it's lovely that this woman obviously has the money for a regular old apartment but decided to go for a more unique, smaller and simpler route instead ☺️ Tiny homes on trailers that are lovingly handmade from reclaimed materials suit some people's styles and budgets and are great, and other bigger homes made to the highest standards suit others, and are also great! She seems like a lovely woman too, I wish her well in her new place

About building a tiny house, here is a helpful page you may like: "Tiny House Safety - 20 tips from a safety expert" at tiny-project (.) com Examples of points made: Do not vent a gas/propane water heater unit below an operating window. Vent your waist water piping and storage tanks, if any, to above the roof as these may be explosive gasses. (found under # 11)
