Its no question the Wacaco products have been an awesome addition to my field kit. Espresso on the trail is a great thing. Here is my comparison of the Nanopresso and Minopresso If you're interested in the Nanopresso or Minipresso, see the link here: amzn.to/2YolDwH

i've got an nanopresso, an ikea milk frothing mug and a milk hand beater, an hario coffee bean handy grinder, an baby milk bottle for warming the milk by hot water. these costs me less than an hundred usd, while i could make a wonderful cappuccino every morning by myself, which is better than some cafe to me.

The Minipresso doesn’t have the barista kit. Get the Nano, much better accessories. Also the Mini comes as either ground version or pod version, the Nano can do both as you can get an adapter for pods. Nano definitely more versatile. Finally... use some decent coffee ffs. You’ve gone to the trouble to get some decent portable espresso machines yet you are using over roasted, long life supermarket rubbish like Lavezza or Illi! Check your independent coffee shops out and buy from one that you like. Avoid chains (you know who) as they charge the same money yet their beans aren’t freshly roasted and their coffee tastes burnt.

If you get the Minipresso for Cafitally pods you can refill the pods which enables you to carry a number of prepared pods with you or to use a used pod as a 'basket' - ie refilling it in situ with ground coffee.

Sergio, I have a nanopresso. I can tell you it will not keep water hot inside the unit. It is a dense plastic, it will radiate heat efficiently. The water reservoir is noticeably warm after one use. There is no vacuum insulation like any good thermos. That said, you can extract a shot with warm or even cold water, but it's nowhere near as good.

if you want the rolls royce of profiling espresso as we use with the big La Marzoccos and Slayer espresso machines, you can actually do this with the custom made to order www.portaspresso.com/page010.html ... The maker is in Australia and he custom makes each one! he has videos here on youtube also to present how they work... not many in the states know about it except us hard core espresso lovers! and usually somehow tied to the industry! he does not mass produce because he wants to make sure every single one works.. forever basically! check em out! I have a few large espresso makers, la Marzoccos to Fiorenzato to Rancilio and this little dude can produce as good or better than they can! the trade off is how many you can produce! lol anyway my rant! As for your videos! they make Ham enjoyable for people again in an age of cell phones and internet.. I too found myself back in the game! I just picked up a Kenwood TM-D710G and decided after seeing your videos and others that its still hot soo.. General is was! and maybe Extra! keep up the enjoyable Videos!

What about ground coffee in the minipresso ns - does that clog the thing or works ?
@gilles111
@gilles111 3 года назад
The NS stands for Nespresso, so you need to use Nespresso cups in that one. There is no filter or cup for ground coffee in the Minipresso NS. The Minipresso GR is for ground coffee. If you want both options, better buy the Nanopresso machine and order the Nespresso unit separate. In the Nanopresso you can switch the unit for ground coffee and the Nespresso unit (you can also combine the Nanopresso Nespresso unit and the large water container of the Barista kit or Nanovessel to make a lungo). The Nanopresso comes with a lot of options and accessoires, the Minipresso only in GR or NS, there is no extra NS unit (or GR unit) to buy separate. And to answer your question, using ground coffee in the Minipresso NS clog the machine.

Very good video, well explained and good overall process to compare these little machines. However, you lost me when you said you are using Lavazza, and tastes like bitter chocolate. YUCK. You wont taste any difference if using bad coffee from the get go. Go ahead get yourself some specialty whole beans, grinder, and a gram scale. Then you can test them, otherwise it is a waste of time really.
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 5 лет назад
What do you recommend?
@eda7875
@eda7875 5 лет назад
Well on the scale, a .1 gr scale is pretty light, but I understand backpacking every little thing counts. You can dial in with a .1 gr scale at home and use a timer to time the process, then only use the timer outdoors. Outdoor conditions might chance the timing a little bit though so I suggest you watch for blonding as well. You basically ended up making long over-extracted shots that are bitter, that's why you taste bitter chocolate. Espresso should have some bitterness to it but it should also be sweet. On the coffee. If you cut a banana it will oxidize quite fast and turn brown, right? well same thing happens with coffee. If you grind it, it oxidizes and gets stale very quickly (in a matter of minutes), this results on coffee that will taste bitter and weak, losing all of the complex flavors. Lavazza is a cheap mass produced coffee think of it as like bud light for beer, well not as bad, maybe samuel adams light or something like that. Go to a local roaster and find a bean that's not roasted too dark, and make sure it has been roasted in the past 5 days (fresh). You can also order black cat espresso from Intelligentsia, it is good and has a traditional espresso taste to it. A bit over-priced for how good it is, but it is a safe bet. For the grinder, which is even more important than the espresso machine itself, you can buy the baratza sette, grind your coffee and test it at home, then you can pack the ground coffee and take it with you. Hey it is not the best, but coffee that was ground hours ago is better than coffee that was ground maybe months ago!. An electric grinder can be expensive, so there is a second option (manual ceramic burr grinder). I personally like the Hario mini which goes for $25. Cool thing about the mini is that you can take it with you, it will add a little weight though. Espresso is not forgiving at all, you can't really ignore the bean, grinder, and brew ratio. I suggest you check www.homebarista.com to guide yourself through the espresso making process. You really have to grind the coffee yourself, and dial in your shot, you can't skip that. Your video is really good and everything is very well explained. And kudos on pre-warming the cups. I updated my comment and like your video because your work is good, just really need to make a fair comparison with real espresso and good beans. There is another channel of a guy who tests portable espresso machines, he's doing everything right, look it up. I won't say who he is here because I don't want to advertise him on your channel. It is portafilter by the way lol.
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 5 лет назад
I appreciate the detailed reply. I actually have a JavaPresse hand burr grinder and a countertop burr grinder, so I think I am not far off from getting some better results. Is there a recommended bean you can buy online? Thanks again,
@eda7875
@eda7875 5 лет назад
Give the grinders a try. Yes you can buy quality beans online. I like Brio Coffeworks, their espresso bean "Calypso" is good, if you want to try something very sweet and unique try their "Ethipian sidama ardi" www.briocoffeeworks.com/collections/single-origin/products/ethiopia-sidama-ardi This is one is extremely good but very hard to brew, calypso is more forgiving. Brio is a very small roaster located in Vermont and all their beans are fair trade, they make really good stuff. Another option is "black cat espresso" roasted by intelligentsia, you can also order online. Intelligentsia is a much bigger roaster, I believe they are located in Los Angeles but also have facilities in the east coast (Boston). You can also do some research and find local roasters that make specialty coffee. Specialty coffee will be around $14-$22 for 12 ounces. Yeah it is a bit "expensive" but think of it as good quality, difficult to buy good wine for less than $18, so it isn't that bad. Look up local roasters, you'd be surprised how many small roaster companies are around. It is kind of like the micro-brewery boom. Remember to use the nanopresso in non-pressurized mode by removing a little piece of rubber in the porta-filter. It is really easy and it is in the instructions. I suggest you get a little more coffee than you think you'll need as it will take you a few tries to get the hang of it. Good luck.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse well,being italian i m extremely picky about coffee . Too much trouble. I use a stove top espresso maker with my jet boil. Works a lot better.

You take that on a hike?

So.. weird question. I see how this is good for travels to save some money but cant you just fill a thermos with coffee/ espresso on a hike and drink it on the spot. Does coffee not sit well?

@@Pandababy1950 It's not a weird question. But it depends on the duration you're away from electricity/home. If you are more than 6-8 hours away, very likely you can't keep coffee hot. A fresh espresso also doesn't keep that well. small volume, not much heat capacity, most thermos are too big, and you will end up heating the air inside and losing temperature of the coffee. The short answer: it depends.

Actually jetboil + nanopresso is a great combo. Then you can have soup as well. I have the jetboil french press and it's OK, but nothing like this.

Dafuq?! You know you don't buy pre-ground coffee right? You need fresh beans and a quality grinder to get the best results.

you dont use pre ground coffee for espresso (usually for quality). ground coffee will stay good for about 24 hours if kept in a vacuum seal container. but more so, pre ground coffee is not fine enough for espressi

You can spend your time grinding, plus the added weight in your pack, or you can get the coffee going and get on to the radio time

What did you do wrong in making this espresso? Everything. I am on the internet, so I know more and can do everything better than you. Where is my channel demonstrating my superior skill? I didn't feel like making one. I need to leave some internet money for the amateurs.
