During the height of the Cold War, on June 9, 1982, American President Ronald Reagan went on a state visit to the German Capital of Bonn in West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) at the Hammerschmidt Villa.
The Bundeswehr was represented by the Wachbataillon, the official honor guard of the German Armed Forces. Various German marches were performed by the Military Band (Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr) including the famous Prussian presentation march titled "Preußischer Präsentiermarsch."

A few things worth noting: - The Musikkorps has two drummers. - The officers wear white gloves, while the conscripts wear dark grey ones. You don‘t see that anymore in the Wachbattalion these days! - The arm swing is slower and feels way more natural. I love it! - Spielmannszug and Musikkorps don‘t play together. - The drill with the rifles is notably faster. - Also 1:05 Helmut Schmidt, my beloved. Thanks for uploading! Nice to see something from the other side of the border! :)

-West German-era Bundeswehr march tempo and step was faster -drum bass sound louder -and the wide spielmannszug and the Musikkorps have 5 men to the sides, a common marching formation in the Bundeswehr

It is nice to hear a different entrance march. I do wish that today they would have some variety in the marches they play to enter and exit the ceremonies.

I am sure if this has something to do with the recording type but the drum beat in this clip is a lot heavier and quicker than it is today (compared to recent Bundeswehr parades). Maybe the Bundeswehr music band performanced differently during the Cold War era? Anyways, great upload as usual. Thanks! I really enjoy it!
@MaximusandHistory
@MaximusandHistory Год назад
No, they perform about the same. It depends on how many bass drums are present in the band. Sometimes it's one, sometimes its two. Also, you must factor the size of the bass drum! The larger the circumference, the deeper the sound!
@wxyxx4795
@wxyxx4795 Год назад
@@MaximusandHistory That explains a lot. No wonder why the NVA music band was energeric, they had many bass drums and cymbals during performance.🙂I must say that a parade without "Trommel mit Becken" is no parade at all!
@MaximusandHistory
@MaximusandHistory Год назад
@@wxyxx4795The NVA knew the importance of bass drums, hence why they used a lot of them. The main characteristic feature of a military march is its strict rhythm and cadence. If a band is performing a march, it must have the appropriate instruments to maintain said rhythm (bass drums, cymbals) otherwise it becomes very hard to actually "march" to the march!

The swinging of the arms while matching seem to be looser and more natural than in 2023. The rifle drill movements also look faster and more akin to the imperial/Wehrmacht style. At least in my eyes anyway.

During the closing years of German conscription, conscription time was shortened to nine months instead of the previous 11. The commanders of the Wachbattaillon now had the problem that new conscripts wouldn’t have enough time to learn the drill and would therefore upset the precision of the formation at state visits. So they decided to slow it down to make it easier for everyone. In retrospect (and in my opinion), a slower drill makes room for more inconsistencies in the formation so that wasn’t the smartest move. Although take that with a grain of salt, I‘m no soldiers only an observer.

Great material although clearly not all of Villa Hammerschmidt vintage. The first bars of the German Anthem are not played in honour of President Reagan. At 0:57 you see Secretary of State Al Haig, German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and the German Foreign Secretary, Hans-Dietrich Genscher. Only later, after a cut, do Ronald Reagan and German President Karl Carstens (who would have officially welcomed Mr Reagan) appear. PS: The Bavarian march is a gem and played with more panache than you'd often hear these days.

Another RU-vidr by the name of "Risitas le Grand" recently uploaded the ErsteMai parade of the NVA in 1956. Looking at that footage and comparing it to this Bundeswehr footage, I noticed that both armies marched with rifles although the palms are flat in the Bundeswehr's. Do you know when was the last national parade the Volkarmee marched like this as in thid Bundeswehr footage?

Last time was in the 1960's, after that they began to swing their arms in Soviet style (up to the arm pit level) rather than at the belt/waist like in Prussian tradition. However, they technically still marched like this until 1989. But the dimensions of the SKS make it harder for the rifle to rest against the shoulder, so it looks like its kind of sticking straight up and they were using Soviet army style swinging during the last years of the GDR so it looks different. Take a look here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dUP9pcEqYII.html

@MaximusandHistory Год назад
@@yeapxuen5291 Yes, they were using a lot of Soviet drill movements during that parade. I have the very first NVA drill manual, which was published in 1957, one year after the NVA was created. It was likely they resorted to using soviet drill in 1956 due to the lack of a drill manual.

@@MaximusandHistorythe NVA also always marched with a closed fist as in the Soviet style as opposed to the ancient open hand march that has been used since Prussian times. The distinction for the NVA, as you pointed out, is that at first the fist was only raised to the belt but gradually got higher in true Soviet fashion. The NVA was a very fascinating mix of Prussian and Russian drill. Lots of detractors say it was purely Russian but that just simply isn’t true. Thanks for all of these videos!
