Wages across Florida are not keeping pace with the increases in the cost of rent and home prices. Especially in a city like Bradenton, south of Tampa, where the local McDonalds is only paying $13.50/hour for crew.

$13.50/hour translates to $27,000 per year working tull-time. Which is about how much the rent for the typical apartment now costs in Bradenton.
These low wages in Florida mixed with skyrocketing rents and home prices does not seem sustainable. Could a big real estate crash hit Florida as a result?

It’s Florida, she’s afraid of the 3G. In a couple of years she’ll realize there is a 4G, so 5G will just blow her mind, and she still doesn’t know what all of it is. Realistically, she only makes calls with the free Wi-Fi, because she doesn’t even have a real cell plan… 🙄

I work at a grocery store in New Jersey as a dairy clerk. I make $23 dollars an hour. My weekly paycheck is around $900 with overtime after taxes. Me and some buddies rent a 4 Bedroom House. My share is $1200 a month utilities included.

Sounds like you are doing well off. Your monthly wage is $3600, which means you have $2200 after rent and utilities (more on months with 5 paychecks). If you can't live on that then you need to budget better. Your finances are about the same as mine except mine is measured in Canadian dollars and doesn't go as far.

When I got my first fast food job it was in 2013 ish and I worked with lots of different folks even then. Really young people worked the register but there were mostly older to elderly people there.

Slow down new purchases but with 30/40 year fixed mortgages lots of people won’t feel it (unlike in the Uk with 2/5/ rare cases 10 y fixes) you guys feel it by being stupid with cars 0% down payment on a 100k trucks (extreme case), or just living in debt with credit cards..

These jobs used to be for new workers and seniors supplementing their social security. By raising the minimum wage you put pressure on other skilled jobs to stay ahead of the minimum and this causes inflation for the entire economy.

@@krissz22well this is the fast food industry, completely different dynamic from a restaurant or diner. Sometimes these signs are just for show and they're not really hiring. In fast food shifts are typically micromanaged to be understaffed to grind whatever they can from the people they have. Also Fast Food workers haven't been mainly high school kids in decades, it's usually middle-aged men and women often immigrant families that have to share an apartment so they can afford to live there. Typically the only high school kid would be the cashier. Big burnout in that industry mainly due to being overworked, not with hours but with workload.

This is what "competitive wages" means, that you will pay more to keep a good employee from leaving for somewhere that pays better. Except all the traditional manufacturing jobs are gone, and aren't coming back. Coal mines used to employ hundreds of miners. Now, modern coal mines only need maybe 6 engineers per shift. And forgot about factories. The people who own the McDonald's are also the ones who own the rentals. They say they can't charge enough for a happy meal to pay wages but won't include that they sell 100s of meals a day. The rich are doing fine. Pay the workers.

Dumb idea. If you increase wages, you increase cost of the services, always. And McDonald's franchisee don't own the land. They rent the land from McDonald's Corp. A store owner used to be able to live quite comfortably with just the one store in the early 90's and beforehand. Now, with insane increases because of inflation, franchisee owner/operator need 3 stores running at equal capacity just to get that same level of comfort. They may have more money than you, make no mistake, they're no longer rich.

The people who franchise the business don't own the rental. McDonald's takes rent from the franchisees and those costs have to be covered or the owners lose the franchise. So, no, the only way to raise wages is to raise prices in order to pay the franchise fee/rent.

Nobody is supposed to be able to rent a house on minimum wage. One room, at best. Sadly what happens with that assumption that they should be able to: rents and housing prices & food skyrocket. Then the people who have careers that used to make 4x min wage now only make 2x min wage, while batting extremely high inflation -- which is exactly what we're now seeing in many states across the US. Come check out California, where it's 15/hr and will be 18/hr in a few Years. All the single parents who were making 40/hr cannot afford rent.

Some places are only paying $13.00 an hour, goodland ks for example. A #7 meal with extra soda is $9.14. the same meal in Burlington Colorado is $8.14! You get charged food tax on fast food in Colorado.

Came here to say exactly this. The video has a valid point. Expenses and inflation are out pacing income growth across the board for nearly all jobs. Families that were just getting by 4 years ago are now really struggling. However, no one should expect to be able to live on their own with just a minimum wage job. McDonald's is for high school and college students, and people whose spouses are the primary income and their McDonald's salary is just supplemental income.

If you think the color of one's skin and language they speak is the root of the housing problem then there's a word for for that. Pretty effing racist. By your "logic", Toyoko should be the least dense area in the world. And BTW, the word you should of used is climate and land density. The reason why Minnesota is less densely populated is because it has more land area and it has a harsh winter continental climate. Like how 50% to 80% of the world's population is found in tropical, temperate and mediterranean climates (Southen California is mire closely related to a mediterranean climate). And at the end of the day, none of that really matters if the cities in the geographic area didn't hinder vertical building. Southern California can handle all of the population without the insane housing costs if only the region would support building up and provide dense public transportation projects (instead of spending 2 billion on widening the 405 for rich people toll roads.)

I’m a millennial. I was a Bering Sea commercial fisherman for 7 years working 4000+ hours a year and the most I ever made was 60k. Hiring policies and regulations fills our American fishing vessels with foreign nationals who will work for peanuts. Now I’m a plumber and have to live with another plumber because neither of us can afford anything around Seattle where we live. So it’s not always. Work ethic issue, I’ve only ever busted my ass and still can’t every picture the American dream for myself or those around me

That depends on where you live. $20 is good, but people have terrible spending habits. It won't buy you a $350k house, but if you budget right and do certain things, you can make it happen. My mom works real-estate and told me about a bunch of classes you can take to lower your house payments and such. One of her coworker interest rate was 0.9% on a $280k house.

My expenses including my less than 300 square foot apartment come out to about $1850 a month not counting food and gas or anything other than bills. Try eating, driving and keeping stuff like cleaning supplies stocked off $350 a month. Thats central missouri, nowhereville. How the hell am I supposed to save up for a down payment on an overpriced home?

@la8ball instead of considering that consider production vs compensation and you'll see for the past 10 years what should be a parralel line has gone up significantly in production and down in compensation remember every year your boss doesn't give you a raise they are paying you less for that next year. The majority the issue isn't laziness or bad spending it's the largest labor issue since the 1920's that's putting a wrench in things.

I've traveled to 5 states this past year and lived in 3 of them. Its the same story everywhere. Im earning wages that would have been absolutely phenomenal for me 5 years ago and now its just enough to skate by. I'm single and was living in a studio until recently, so my expenses are much lower than many others out there. Its not looking good, folks. I've been getting substantial increases in income steadily for the past few years and it still feels like im getting nowhere.

According to a financial planner your rent should be 25% of your income. At 13.50 an hour, you should be able to cut it by working 4 full-time jobs. Maybe the fact that nobody wants to work is really that nobody wants to work two full-time jobs just to share an apartment with somebody they can't trust, all to just barely hold on until the car dies.

This isn't the issue at all. Most states have what is called a no limit ceiling to what you can charge for rent. If you want to make the rent on your owned property to be 65% what a minimum wage worker makes the state nor president is gonna help you. You have to go to city Hall and impeach your governor for it and it isn't breaking any federal laws so good luck with that. As for the guy above about learning a trade. Most kids nowadays have to have a job and graduate college above a c to avoid being kicked out. Not every kid can juggle the stress of working and staying up at school.

At 13.50 an hour a full time job makes you $2,160 a month. There are studio apartments in Bradenton going for $850 right now. That's a reasonable price to pay for rent, it leaves you $1,310 for your other living expenses, and that's working at McDonalds! The lowest entry level job basically anyone can get! It's not impossible to get by on today's salaries, you just have to be intelligent with your rent and other monthly expenses.

@LawDawg717 it has been pretty rough as a 20 year old I moved out at 17 and have been working 2 jobs and more recently started going to school to be an airplane mechanic and everyone calls me crazy because I work so much but that's what it takes to be able to save money in america I'm lucky I was able to buy a mobile home and pay cheap lot fees. These last 3 years have been pretty fun 😂 I should be done with school this summer and make double my income starting so the struggle will be worth it but godamn almost 4 years of this shit and I'm sure it won't be easy after this either I'll just have more money

@@p5yc40naut To qualify for any rent you need 3x the monthly income. They would not qualify for $850 at $2,160 a month. Also, the listed rent is usually before any fee's are added. The fee's typically add up to an extra 150-200$ to the listed rent price.

I asked the manager of the gas station near me what the companies starting pay was. She said, "we have a very competitive rate of $12.50 for new team members". Told her I need a job, not a hobby.

McDonald's where I live in TN is $11 for crew. Can't buy groceries let alone rent with that kind of pay. National minimum wage needs to be raised, some jobs around here are still offering $7.25 as starting pay and its not feasible.

My first 1 bedroom apartment W/G/S paid was 520 a month and that was 10 years ago. Now the same apartment for the 1 bedroom is 1,550 a month and now you have to pay W/G/S plus they make you pay for Comcast cable TV if you want it or not. It's ridiculous.

It's called "capitalism" and the stain of private business ownership. The owners and CEOs have it all and make you pay out the ass while they hoard all wealth and trickle down your cgwsp income as you have to work more and harder for less making then profit to hoard. It's the effect of the Regan administration's "trickle down economics" and sustaining capitalism which is profit for the rich at all cost as you pay out the asshole for everything including insurance and basic necessities of living. It's called capitalism and everyone swears it "works"

Did the point of this video fly over your head? We're not even talking about home ownership. Rent is over 2k a month. Sorry, but someone working full-time at any job should be able to afford at least rent. And, imho, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a minimum living wage that can afford to support a small family, that goes up and down with inflation. All these bankers want to profiteer, we just want to live.
