As a boy I met Werner Klemperer growing up in Beverly Hills during his Hogan Heroes Days and he was so happy to hear me go on about his Dad and my love for Wagner. I saw him again in a production of Sound of Music . He couldn’t have been nicer.
I worked a couple of years as an usher at the "old" Met in NYC. Don't know if I ever heard Klemperor, but I heard and watched plenty of Wagner. my first time watching the Gods climb to Valhalla almost knocks me, a wise guy from the Bronx, a Yankee Fan, off my feet. I used to sneak in the girl I married, and a bunch of my urgent friends, after the swell in the reserved seats all left when every first act ended. I wonder if that was done in the Coliseum back then? I am listening to this right now.
As others have noted this is not quite Ring without words but it's also a pointless because Wagner said the words are the main thing in his music drama, and he worked on the texts for years ahead of scoring them. His argument in his treatise.
@@pauldoan8391 But possibly not good. Wagner's text is a hybrid of imagined old German and his own poetry with some stick rhymes. By itself it might be unintentionally funny. But where it is useful is say Tristan, which he called a plot ( Haendlung) not an opera, and in the famous Liebestod the actual scene is called Der Veklaerung (transfiguration) which makes sense reading the text, something that few people do, certainly in English.
It's a different piece. The first hour is 'opera without words' (well, some of the Ring cycle without words.) Then come the Wiesendonck Lieder, which are a set of songs Wagner wrote while brooding over his own sins (and while writing Tristan and Isolde.) Then come the overtures and preludes to the operas (or some of them at least.)
I love Wagner's music very much, but all of them are too long to listen during limited time of everyday life. Hence this kind of digest edition is often suitable for me as a BGM music.
@@1953Parsifal The great composer Rossini said something like "Wagner has great moments and terrible half hours." Whatever, in terms of deeply emotionally moving orchestral music there are few who can match him!

I was in the Philharmonia chorus at the end of Klemperer's career: he was a stricken oak in those last performances but I count myself extremely fortunate to have taken part in them, they were unforgettable experiences!
Unbelievable! Highest quality ever - not only regarding the composition and the interpretation but also the technical aspect of this outstanding record
Agree, but the magicians spell is even more magical in Bayreuth hearing it live as I did. The euphoria keeps you elevated for many days after the performance.
Thanks Classical Music for an outstanding recording of Wagner music. Otto klemperer, together with Furtwängles, epitomize the years of glory of the classic German school of conductors who defined the XXth century. Klemperer was specially gifted for symphonic music, ad he conducted Wagner as a symphonic composer. He was not far from the mark. Wagner operas for non savants are difficult and lengthy; this collection is a splendid introduction to the melodies that characterize the higher Wagner's art form, the operas. Quality of the recording, thanks to the remastering, is superb.
This is very incorrectly titled. if is not the Ring ohne Wörten but, rather, a collection of orchestral segments of his entire output with some of his songs thrown in, as well. As such, it is lovely but it is not the Ring Without Words.
In 1958 Klemperrer conducted a complete Beethoven symphonic cycle at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the performance of the 9th Symphony was rated as the performance of the century!!
Beautiful, mythic and inspiring us all to greatness. Wagner was sent by the gods to help us see Beauty. Klemperer does a first rate job throughout, capturing both the Fire and the subtle Beauty of Wagner.
Wonderful Wagner/Klemperer with or without words. Klemperer and Furtwangler directing Wagner.. Who could ask for anything more? There's another impressive Wagner/Klemperer recording, this time with words: The Flying Dutchman /EMI. Don't miss it if you want to feel and "see" the wild sea. Thanks so much this uploading➕
Thanks for the beautiful music. The composer must have drifted into space contemplating the earth below all the while writing down,, note by note, how he felt by what he saw.
One might think that this is treason to the genius of Wagner for whom opera was the synthesis of music, voice, theatre but I think it underlines the beauty of the music.
Do you realise that the more spiritually troubled an artist is the deeper they dig into their creative abilities? Wagner, Mozart, and others had personal demons to placate and exorcise, and out of the whirlwind of their personal quests came this kind of beauty. To a point, the human organism must be pressured and traumatised towards the best it can be.
Well it certainly helps to express those things, but I don't believe it's what makes the artist so great. Vincent van Gogh, with his mental instability, I believe hindered his artisic expression, because if he didn't have it, who knows, we may of had more and better artworks made by him.
Although misnamed, this compilation seems a superb showcase for Klemperer's Wagner. Bravo, "Classical Music/ /Reference Recording!" (During this time of live-performance "starvation," I suggest we make extra efforts to remain thankful to all participants in the digital and the virtual music supply chains.)
wow so beautiful I'm kinda surprised this has the sigfried idyll, Tristan und Isolde & die meistersinger in it? those aren't part of the ring cycle but nonetheless its nice to have a compilation of wagner's best works. to be honest I'm not in love with the adaptation of Siegfried idyll here although its beautiful I dont think I prefer the chamber orchestration even though that was the original concept for the piece...only thing that would make this recording better is if it was the richly orchestrated version of sigfried idyll...then it would be perfect....
WAGNER, nije za mene.ON JE bio. HITLEROV LJUBIMAC ... ON,WAGNER je ZA TZ. REVOLUCIONERE a ja sam. HUMANISTA !! FRANÇOISE. TREUSARD je njegov "DUH".....
here is not IMPORTANT WAGNER AS A MAN, NEVERTHELESS . HE WAS A PRSONALITY, BAD OR GOOD. IT IS HIS MUSIC THAT MATTERS and it is magic which ambraces you from bottom to top and and goes involving you in never ening charm and beauty. i was bright up on VERDY. WHOM . I , IT I..ADORE, BUT WAGNER, I PRESSUME. HIS MUSIK. IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING I KNOW. BY THE WAY, HE LIVED BEFORE HTLER. it had nothing to with him. you must know that in that time GERMANY, as NOWADAYS DID NOT EXIST, NEITHER DID ITALY, SO IT WAS A WISH TO UNITE THE COUNTRY AS HOMELAND FOR ALL PEOPLE LIVING THERE, THE SAME AS EUROPE UNITED AND USA, I HOPE I HELPED A LITTLE,

I am one, amongst the countless masses, who have contributed virtually nothing of any real value over the course of their lives. We, the seemingly worthless, have been dragged kicking and screaming through the centuries by a select few of truly exceptional beings. The fact that they existed at all, and that their work continues to persevere, must count for something. And maybe when it's all said and done, by the simple act of appreciating it, I count for something too.
How did I overlook Klemperer? WOW !! Normally I would be looking for Szell/Cleveland for Wagner, but I guess from now on I'll be looking for Klemperer also. Klemperer seems fast and crisp. I don't necessarily prefer that, but it's Interesting.
Nice, but that's a collection of Wagner pieces, not the "ring without words". Tristan, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, die Meistersinger and Rienzi isn't the ring....
God reaches down and touches a select few.....Or perhaps God touches all of us, but only a select few make a mark. Whichever the case may be, Wagner made his life count.....
"We have the impression that we are listening to a chamber orchestra with an intimate and shimmering sound". We dont "have de impression". This piece was indeed recorded, at Klemperer insistance, with only 13 musicians, as in the original score.
Whilst it is supremely interesting to listen to this, Wagner needs words. The words become one with the music; often one cannot distinguish between when the instruments play and when there is only singing.
