Having heard so many interpretations, I asked my self why this was so overwhelming. Reinmar has to my ears a most unusual voice with a unique timbre. It also sounds as if the microphone was placed closer to him than is now usual. The effect is something both intimate and epic.
This might be the best recorded performance of Walkuere's final scene. What it was like to see and hear this Wotan on stage must have been an overwhelming experience.
Few scenes can turn me into a sobbing mess quite like this one, and this is one of the best-sung I’ve ever heard. Incredible consistency. Also the horns and strings are world class. Thank you!
Just ate up a whole comment!!! Hearing Wagner sung like this, Italian it and lyrically by a huge voice gives me even more inspiration and hope about singing this role. I use to think of Friedrich Schorr as my favorite But this is so much more stunning Tho it is not live and that changes the dynamic Plus, recordings are deaf to the 5th dimension of sound, which is volume. But wow!!! Love the feet of clay on the 'nie!'
make no mistake - the VOLUME was there - despite the wider vocal range! The choice of deciding on basso, baritone or tenor depends on where the voice sounds the most beautiful! Reinmar could easily have sung Siegmund or Tannhauser - but how well. Also - recording imperfections mar the assessment.
Nice,...strong voice also...this Hans Reinmar .... but really preference for Matthias Goerne.......with his very special voice timbre and interpretation.... Since years his Lieder, Schubert ...unbelievable...and now also in Wagner....Amazing ...WOW ! We wait for him in Amsterdam...next month...more than WELCOME ! Must be a real happening !
+Nol van Vessum I will say that as much as I enjoy Goerne in Lieder, he has nowhere near the vocal power required for a live Wotan. It's really a rare voice with the power and tone required. Plenty have the timbre...few have the power.
