He was an American that truly made the Berlin Philharmonic perform to its top potential. Mazel, who passed away, along with Valery Gergiev, are the top 2 conductors. Listen to Gergiev conduct Prokofiev's The Firebird and it makes your skin stand up. Truly magnificent.

@@lalalalelele1189 Well I used to be like you. Operatic singing was the bane of my existance. I still think it is rather ridiculos to sing the same 4 verses of a stanza more than once and for the life of me cannot find much enjoyment in operas where the singers haver to constantly repeat how "furious, furious, fffuuuuhohohohohrrious, fuhuhurious, furioooooooooooos" they are. But thank god for Wagner inventing the music drama, which is more like a sung play where usually no one repeats any phrase, and the orchestra is equally if not more important than the singers.

Awesome... It is my favourite list, and I play it from time to time when I have a spare moment to leave anuthing else aside and taste the gorgeous sound of the BPO, Maazel knew every corner of the score and conducted it in a manner I have only heard from Mehta, Barenboim and Thielemann among the conductors still alive. No one else comes even close to this. Then in the past of course we had Knapperstsbusch and Furtwängler, perhaps Strauss and Kempe.

Does anyone know whether the brief sad motif at the beginning of the clip and at 1:40 is a recurring motif in Wagner's Ring cycle? I've heard lots of Wagner's instrumental themes, but I haven't listened to the Ring in its entirety. If it's recurring, do you know where in the Ring cycle i could hear it? Thank you in advance.

You may find a million versions of it if you search for "Zürück vom Ring", which is the last line of this opera and of the Ring cycle, and leads directly to this orchestral finale. An opera's "song titles" are often the first line that is sung in that particular segment -- it makes more sense in older formats built on Arias and Recitatives, and it's a pattern used for CDs of Wagner even if it makes less sense for the 'music drama' format. This is useful knowledge if you ever need to search for highlights: "Leb' wohl", "Winterstürme" and "Hojotoho!" in Walküre; "Sorglose Schmiede", "Bin ich nun frei?" and "Heda! Heda, hedo!" from Rheingold; "Heil dir, Sonne!" and "Nothung! Nothung! Neidliches Schwert!" for Siegfried; "Heil dir, Günther!", "Brünnhilde, heilige Braut!" and of course "Zürück vom Ring!" from Götterdämmerung. Pardon the garrulous answer. I like this music.

vesteel, it is. Jonas, you're right, but Maazel edited the Ring to be an hour long and not require any voices. That's the Ring without words. That's vesteel's question. But anyway, the last part does have words: Hagen shouts 'zurück vom Ring'.
