Wagner: Tristan and Isolde - Prelude and Liebestod | Waltraud Meier, Daniel Barenboim & WEDO

They’re the two most famous sections of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde (Tristan and Isolde): The first act prelude, and Isolde’s ‘Liebestod’ from the third act. They’re presented here by an extraordinary lineup: Daniel Barenboim conducting the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Waltraud Meier singing Isolde's Liebestod. The much-loved pieces were performed in the year 2006, in a concert encore at the Berliner Philharmonie.
The prelude alone of Tristan und Isolde wrote musical history. It begins with the legendary ‘Tristan chord’ - so harmonically ambiguous that, with it, Wagner had broken with every conventional theory of harmony in one fell swoop. The chord creates an ominous suspense that cries out for harmonious resolution, yet every move to resolve it only further compounds the initial tension. This creates a perpetual, musical limbo. The opening motif of the Tristan chord is woven all throughout the opera’s prelude - leading it to be characterized as “desire, made into music".
Desire is certainly the overarching theme of Tristan und Isolde: It is the essence of the love story between the two. In worldly life, this love not only remains unfulfilled, but ends tragically. On the metaphysical level, however, love is celebrated as rarely before: As Isolde holds the dead Tristan in her arms, she sings one of the most sensual love songs ever written. Her ‘Liebestod’ - literally ‘love-death’ - is a purging of all things earthly; a glorification of ecstatic union with the beloved.
Waltraud Meier, one of the world’s pre-eminent Wagner performers, is filled with fervor and devotion as she sings the part. The choir members, standing behind her, observe the magnificent mezzo-soprano with bated breath. A more stirring vocal performance could not be found.
Whether you’re a lover of Wagner or no: Enjoy these two milestones of musical history!

What a legend Waltraud Meier is. The looks on the choir members' faces says a lot. Professional singers mesmerized, stunned, entranced, with an absorbed smile. I am grateful to have heard her sing the Wesendonck Lieder in concert. This woman knows how to captivate every soul in a room.

❤ The production is what you call perfect. However, I would like to add, the enormous amount of work involved in creating such a sound creates colour, space, form and balance. I am very moved by how engaged the orchestra is. Be the only one lives into and can see all the way into the soul and originates its power in an element that gives us listeners - what they themselves do not get, because, they work to create - what we get. Learning to listen is learning to linger. You see Wagner, you feel his spirit. Tragedy yes. It is what we are as humans. Many classical enthusiasts make the fatal mistake of comparing who is the best. Instead of watching and listening to the interaction. Many productions - especially classical records or LP's has been produced over many years. Some up to 7 years. Before it goes into production. Striving for perfection can be destructive, as mistakes are not mistakes, but provide a dynamic human content. The classical world is not to satisfy its audience by proving its perfection. The art of being alive. Unfortunately, this world has lost so many talented musicians and singers because it was ruined by bad talk and publicity, by people who do not understand or are capable of dynamic humanity and strive to turn art into a kind of sporting competition. And saying "the best" is not nice. Because I can say that Copenhagen has the best Wagner voices in the world. That's not the point. Even those who qualify as the best do not like that role at all. So if Opera is to survive, it is a strong necessity to open up to empathy and the ability to see the joy it is. Anyone can, when they have their heart and soul. Thank you for being able to experience this living space and thank you RU-vid for making it possible for everyone to listen. Oh, if only we could get the very young involved, and let them play with words, thoughts and uplift others, instead of being derogatory and offensive or the bullies. A good unity is to lift, bring out the rare talents we have. We have many wagons, but unfortunately we are unable to bring them forward. Be aware and take care. All are good enough.❤

Extraordinary. I happened on this today totally out-of-the-blue. As it began, I immediately noticed the camerawork here is sheer genius. Meier and Barenboim shown displaying (without obstruction) what made/makes them the artistic lightening rods and spell-casters that they are. Every single performative detail here is individually completely fascinating and yet somehow totally subsumed into one coherent and potent whole. The extended silence at the end says it all. Thank you for this fine post.

Bravo to the Berlin audience for holding absolute stillness in the hall after the cutoff, until DB dropped his hands. Even the Maestro himself seemed reluctant to let go of the ephemeral moment. And I'm sure different genres have done similar for many as well. There's great pop music just and not-so-great classical music. Thankfully, whatever one thinks, Wagner gifted this to the world, and musicians from many genres have ended up standing on his shoulders, whether wittingly or not. And to have that shiver of recognition in music one may perceive on the surface as "very different" from Tristan (or whatever else) makes it all the more powerful.

, I would imagine that Wagner heard everyghing in his head, and was able to transpose it to sheet music. What is so amazing is his capability on some of his orchestral compositions where he was able to create up to 4 melodies and counter melodies running concurrently without any discords. A prime example of that technique was Maestrosingers.

Hör ich nur diese Weise, die so wunder - voll und leise, 6 00:13:37,000 --> 00:13:47,000 Wonne klagend, alles sagend, mild versöhnend aus ihm tönend, in mich dringet, 7 00:14:00,000 --> 00:14:10,000 auf sich schwinget, hold erhallend um mich klinget? Heller schallend, mich umwallend, 8 00:14:25,000 --> 00:14:35,000 sind es Wellen sanfter Lüfte? Sind es Wogen wonniger Düfte? Wie sie schwellen, 9 00:14:44,000 --> 00:14:54,000 mich umrauschen, soll ich atmen, soll ich lauschen? Soll ich schlürfen, untertauchen? 10 00:15:00,000 --> 00:15:10,000 Süss in Düften mich verhauchen? In dem wogenden Schwall, in dem tönenden Schall, in des Welt-Atems 11 00:15:27,600 --> 00:15:37,600 wehendem All - versinken - unbewusst - höchste Lust!
