WAGON TRAIN 1957 Cast: THEN & NOW 2022 Thanks For The Memories
Wagon Train is an American Western series that aired 8 seasons: first on the NBC television network (1957-1962), and then on ABC (1962-1965). Wagon Train debuted on September 18, 1957, and became number one in the Nielsen ratings. It is the fictional adventure story of a large westbound wagon train through the American old West, from Missouri to California. Its format attracted different famous guest stars per episode, as travelers or as residents of the settlements they encountered. The show initially starred supporting film actor Ward Bond as the wagon master (replaced after his death in 1960 by John McIntire) and Robert Horton as the scout (eventually replaced by similar-looking Robert Fuller when Horton opted to leave the series).

I used to watch Wagon Train as well as Death Valley Days back then. Robert Fuller has been on a lot of westerns as well as emergency. Still out there and performing good show.

Ward Bond (Major Seth Adams) and Robert Horton (Flint McCullough) were the original cast members. Stuntmen Frank McGrath and Terry Wilson were friends of Ward Bond, for whom Bond used his influence to be added to the cast. McGrath had broken his back performing a stunt in 1955 and hadn't worked in two years, and was in great financial distress. Bond fought to get both his friends regular speaking parts, although both also performed stunts on the show. In the earliest episodes, McGrath is smooth shaven, but became the bearded comic sidekick (like Gabby Hayes or Fuzzy St. John). Terry Wilson was gradually worked in as a regular, at first as just another passenger on the wagon train, then as a passenger who leads a mutiny against the Major's leadership, then as trusted member of the wagon train, and finally as an employee of the wagon train. By the end of the first season, Bill Hawks had been established as a long time right hand man to the Major. Hawks was a married man, whose wife was a nice lady, whose wife was a hateful witch, and eventually Hawks was a lifelong bachelor. Producers apparently didn't think that viewers could remember from one episode to the next what Bill Hawks had been perviously. Robert Horton refused to renew his contract when it ran out after 5 seasons. NBC didn't want the show without Horton, and Wagon Train moved to ABC in September of 1962. John McIntire had replaced Ward Bond as Wagon Master, after Bond died of a heart attack in a Houston Texas Hotel in November 1960. McIntire's Chris Hale was more amiable than Bond's Major Adams, and the show wasn't quite as good without the Major's bluster and sarsasm. Scott Miller and Robert Fuller was tried as replacements for Robert Horton, but ratings tanked. Wagon Train grew stale after the fifth season, but westerns were fading by the early1960's. As many westerns as there were in 1957, it is hard to bellieve that there are no new westerns on tv nowadays.

Left wing nuts made sure that there are no westerns on TV. 1. Can't shoot Indians. 2. Can't show women in subservient roles. 3. Can't show anyone shooting a gun

The man on the left is Leonard P. Geer but the man on the left is Will Geer who played Grandpa Walton on The Waltons.

It's amazing how much older men looked than their age back then. I always assumed Bill Hawks was in his 50s, and Major Adams in his mid 70s. Much like Jock Ewing on Dallas (Jim Davis) who looked like he was 95 at the time of his death, but was just 71. It shows was heavy smoking, very popular, in those days, did to people. No disrespect, at all, but just the truth. I was absolutely STUNNED, that Ward Bond was just 56 when he died of a heart attack. My boyfriend is close to turning 52, and looks 25 years younger than Bond did, at the time of his unfortunate death. But my BF has never smoked a cigarette in his life. I still find it hard to believe that Bill Hawks was in his 30s during this series. But, I guess, such is life.

It's fascinating how appearances can sometimes be deceiving, and factors like heavy smoking can age individuals prematurely. It's a reminder to prioritize our health and make choices that support our well-being.

THAT WAS NOT MORGAN WOODWARD IN THE LAST SCENE BEFORE GEER. IT WAS LQ JONES WHO WAS IN THE CAST OF THE VIRGINIAN and many movies and other westerns. I also do not believe the younger Will Geer in your picture was actually Geer either.
