The march's name sounds like it's named after the Battle of Wagram.

It was composed for the grenadiers that fought very bravely during this battle and stood their ground until the end. The actual name of the march is "Wagramer Grenadier Marsch"

It is also alternatively known as österreicher grenadiersmarsch

The Austrians lost this battle in July 1809 to Napoleon, however they made him pay dearly for the victory and inflicted 35,000 casualties on the french. The Austrians had 200 less cannons and 20,000 less men. It was a bloody slugging match that lasted 2 days. The Austrian retreat was well disciplined however they could no longer continue the war. This battle followed the battle of Aspern in which the Austrians lead by Arch duke Charles inflicted napoleons first defeat as emperor, in Wagram Napoleon got his revenge but it was not easy. When a french diplomat mocked the Austrians Napoleon said “it is obvious you were not at Wagram”

Wagram was one of the most honourable Austrian defeats in history. The Austrian troops fought so impressively that Napoleon told to a minister who mocked them: "It's obvious that you weren't at Wagram." Not to mention that Napoleon suffered his first major tactical defeat at Aspern-Essling, where whole Europe was surprised at Austria. France may subdued Austria, but at a really huge cost - French medical services were completely overwhelmed and Napoleon lost many veteran soldiers. Unfortunately, Lannes died at Aspern-Essling, a very sad event actually. Aspern-Essling and Wagram were major improvements of Austrian fighting performance compared to the previous disasters (Rivoli, Hohenlinden, Ulm and Austerlitz).

Good morning Dr.Ludwig and fans! You've already posted other versions of this wonderful march in previous years. I like to listen to it again and I like the picture. As you can see, I have temporarily changed my user photo. It's related to the custom of "sorcova", a custom in certain eastern countries (especially Romania and Bulgaria), a custom specific to the celebrations at the beginning of the year, supposed to bring happiness. Yesterday I didn't have time to explain, but I'm doing it today.The Wikipedia article about the "Sorcova" says that: "Sorcova is a Romanian popular custom, practiced on the morning of January 1st. This custom is very old and is spread throughout the country, being practiced mainly by children. Sorcova is also used to describe the object that characterizes this custom. It consists of a stick or twig decorated with artificial flowers of different colors, wherewith children slightly hit on back their parents or other adults from their family and friends in the morning of the New Year Day, wishing them, in special verses, health and luck. When they begin to say the verses, sorcova is inclined in the direction of the person to whom they address all wishes, sorcova playing the role of a magic wand, endowed with the ability to transmit health, youth and fertility to the vised one; verses are very suggestive in this regard. The text of sorcova, reminiscent of a spell, merely reinforces the movement of sorcova... This custom varies depending on the ethnographic region. In northern Transylvania, children go with sorcova from house to house, wishing health in exchange for local delicacies (candies, cakes, apples, nuts)... The term of Sorcova comes from the Bulgarian word Surov (tender green), allusion to the budded twig, broken from a tree, especially a fir tree. Some etymologists consider that sorcova derives from the Slavic word soroku (forty): the verses of sorcova consists of 40 syllabic groups corresponding to the 40 touches of sorcova: Sorcova, the merry, To live, To grow old, Like a pear tree, like an apple tree, Like a rose, Hard like the rock, Fast like the arrow, Stiff like iron, Strong like steel, Happy new year!". Excuse me Dr. Ludwig for doing this long "parenthesis" which has nothing to do with this march, but with the start of the year, when we should all wish each other the best and be positive and carefree like children. It seems to me that in Germany there are similar customs for the beginning of the year, but I believe that they are local or regional and are practiced until the Epiphanies. These are ancestral customs supposed to "exorcise" and positively mark the beginning of the year. Thank you and have a very nice Sunday 🎼🎵🎶🎺🥁💐🌲🎋🎉

It's nice to start afternoon of the second day of the new year with a brave march. We have the sun shining so brightly, reflecting in the snow. Imagine the combination of the Wagram March with thousands of diamond lights streaming in the snow and the sky flooded with sunshine. It's an amazing experience! Glory to the brave Grenadiers, well done, they stood their Heimat to the death. Rest in peace! Even though Napoleon won then.

Why would the Austrians create a march for a battle that ultimately led to their capitulation?
@TheAustrianAnimations87
@TheAustrianAnimations87 2 года назад
Wagram was actually one of the few defeats where the Austrian army performed very well despite extremely difficult odds. This march was composed for the grenadiers that fought very bravely during this battle and stood their ground until the end. Austria suffered slightly higher casualties than France, but France lost slightly more guns and standards due Austrian skill. Napoleon himself was so impressed by the Austrians' performance at this battle that he would tell a minister who mocked them: "It's obvious that you weren't at Wagram."
