Just discovered this vid, great instructions! Just wondering is there a way for me to use the map function (not pre planned route) but with the direction pointing ahead/auto adjust?? I gone a bit free range recently with my rides try to find different routes, however the map itself doesn't auto adjust and it is a bloody pain in the butt! Ended up stopping every 100m so I can check my phone... Not ideal.

Map management on the Wahoo units are sometimes a bit of a nightmare. Not really because it's inherently bad, but because map problems can put you in so much trouble. I'm just home from a bike trip from Stockholm to Amsterdam, about 1600 kms and passing through Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. One morning while cycling through Germany, the ELEMNT app said there was a new firmware, so I installed it while eating breakfast. That same day the whole Germany map just vanished from my ROAM mid-ride. I had a spare ELEMNT which I used the next day, and of course the same thing happened to that one. In the end, I managed to get maps back on the ROAM, I think a few extra firmware updates were involved, but maps still act strange, and have done so before. For example, now that I'm back in Sweden, I'm unable to download the Sweden maps, despite the ROAM having 2.2 GB of space available. At one point a few months ago I got desperate and plugged the ROAM into my laptop and just deleted the entire maps folder. Fun fact: the folders you see on the ROAM aren't automatically created when you factory reset the unit or something, so once the maps folder is gone, the ROAM knows nothing about maps. The ELEMNT app will tell you that there are no maps on your units, and no maps are available for download. At that point I was pretty sure I had essentially bricked my ROAM. Fortunately I have multiple Wahoo units, so I manually created an empty maps folder, plugged my ELEMNT in, had a look in the maps folder to see what things looked like and whether there was some file that might be some kind of config file for the whole map management thing. IIRC I found such a file, and copied it over to the ROAM, and I believe there was some kind of hand-editing by pure guesswork involved, and gave it a go. IIRC I needed a few attempts, but eventually the ELEMNT app said that maps were available for download, and the downloads actually worked. PHEW! I seriously consider doing this thing all over once more, just to document it, and possibly put up a video showing how I did it. Things would be a lot easier if Wahoo had empty map folder structures available for download. If they had I'd probably do a fresh reinstall every few months just to keep things running smoothly...

you can set up your laptop at as hopspot via windows 10. then connect to your mobile to that windows hotspot you just created. This means that using closed hotell wifi you can connect more than one device to the same connection

Hi Shane don't know if this ever happened with wahoo. I just got new phone and pair the app with my bolt and my account transfer no problem except my history. It's said "no worked out recorded", but I have the whole history in the bolt. I have go around myself with any troubleshooting with wahoo (which are not many)and fix everything, but I can't fix this one.

Hi Shane, As an Aussie, you are probably the wrong person to ask, but... I just picked up a ROAM and noticed that there are options to download maps for other states in the USA. I assumed the whole USA would come preloaded, but from the looks of it, this is not an accurate assumption. Do you know if I’ll need to download each state I plan to ride in (usually ride in five different states a year due to travel)? I don’t remember having to do this on my Garmin or on my original Elemnt.

Oops, I think I was misreading what my phone was telling me. I think it does have the USA preloaded, it just has updates for every state, but is only calling my state as the one “local” to me that need to be updated. Not even sure I am explaining it right, but I don’t think I have a problem, LOL.

Hey. I'm a bit confused with these Wahoo apps. I downloaded two.. One is the element one is the fitness and I have no clue how to access maps on my device. I'm not sure why it's always so difficult to find maps. At this point you should be able to open a menu, select a map on the device and follow it. We have to sync, locate, search, need WiFi need this that etc... Is there an easy way to figure this out. Thx

I wish I was tech savvy.. No clue to how to sync a map. Are there two different aps. I uploaded the Canadian map on the roam but no maps came up. Don't know how to locate them on the app. In this tech savvy world this shouldn't even be a process anymore.

Really like the Roam, my issue is I'm trying to support my local bike shop, Long story short, the order for devices in bulk are on hold related to the ROAM firmware updates, so I'm told. I am literally getting impatient and want to hit AMAZON and get a bundle pack.

Yeah, that's a Wahoo thing. I WISH they'd sell them on Amazon so I could get a few $ in affiliate link clicks. The BOLT isn't on there... so I don't suspect we'll see the ROAM in there any time soon.

@@arturkubinski5970 They're basic on the Elemnt and BOLT, yep. The Roam has more detailed maps. I believe they're all sourced from OSM anyhow. The upside is that Garmin allow OSM as an alternative.

@@gplama yes it's the latest firmware, and I noticed the August update addresses a similar issue. However, despite having around 60gb available the App tells me I have 90mb available. I was able to download an update to maps only be deleting a few obscure countries, so, it works but likely not as intended

@@gplama This is horrible. Only 2.8GB of internal storage, for a 350€ device. They could have fitted 32GB easy in there. If maps are poor on my device, it will go straight back to Amazon... I cant download the map for Spain... Only 160MB available, and its brand new, with no maps in it...

The maps are not "pre-loaded", they are simply "loaded". Common misuse of the prefix "pre". To say "pre-loaded" would indicate that they were loaded before they were loaded. Not possible.

WAHOO devices do not sync DOWNHILL Strava Live Segments and potential buyers should be aware.

Mate. Get a grip on life. According to a quick Google search, Strava themselves have disabled downhill segments. If you've got a unit (Garmin?) that is syncing them, it's on borrowed time. You've posted at least 10 times on this channel the same message. Consider this message final. One more spam like raid and you get a shadow block on here.

@@gplama Thanks for your reply but I was expecting a bit more serious investigation than just a google search for the matter. For some this may be a deal breaker. I have contacted Strava Support several times but they always have answered with this general statement: 'At this time, we do not sync downhill segments to devices for Strava Live Segments. Please keep in mind that our system recognises even the slightest negative grade, and there may be segments that display a 0% grade that will not sync to devices for Strava Live Segments.' I am sure that Garmins continue to sync DOWNHILL Strava Live Segments because most of my friends have Garmins. I am considering buying a Garmin to get this feature back and retire my old Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. From my google search, I do not have any other means, I think but I am not sure that Garmins calculate segments from point to point whilst wahoo uses gps. Probably this maybe this the reason that garmins may not have been affected. I have not posted it 10 times on this particular review but once on any related review. I have contacted DC Rainmaker as well who promised at least to ask… If you want to shadow block me then go ahead. Now I have an opened pending incident with Strava Support. I am attaching below all ticket details. Ticket Details: January 18, 2020 10:19 Dear Support, I am having a problem with my Wahoo device not synching descents (only descents - your 1st point). However, what I am asking is if this happens only with Wahoo devices because my friend’s Garmins are synching downhill segments for Strava Live Segments. If Garmins do continue synching downhill segments for Strava Live Segments, I will buy a Garmin device. Looking forward for your reply. @@PanayiotisLadjias You've spammed my channel with comments on the same issue for days across my videos and want me to investigate something that is clearly unsupported by Strava. They say so themselves. My take, as posted, is that you're on borrowed time with Garmin syncing something that Strava themselves don't support. I suspect Garmin will and should remove this feature in the future. How can they offer a feature that's not supported by the source? Go ahead and ask Ray to do more legwork on this, that's fine.

I have confirmation direct from Strava that downhill Strava Live Segments is NOT supported by ANY head unit. As per one of my replies days ago.

@@gplama Thank you very much for checking this out! This is however the same answer I am getting from them for more than a YEAR now but it seems that Garmin devices have a way to sync. I am confirming this in every single ride with my friend's garmin devices. You can test it by yourself starring a slightly downhill segment. On Wahoo it won't appear but on a Garmin device it will. I am having Bolt for almost 3 years and I am super happy with it (especially now with the varia support) but it seems that Garmin devices will continue to be on borrowed time for quite long time. Wahoo updated Strava Live Segments API with update ELEMNT WF48-2169 since the 5th of December 2018! 2 years now!
