Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM Review: 8 New Things // Hands-on Walkthrough

In-depth review: dcra.in/ROAM
Here's everything you need to know about the new features of the Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM, primarily from a navigation standpoint (which, are...well...the only new features). Though I do talk about the new color screen, the ambient light sensor, as well as how the new mapping works - complete with turn by turn directions and route recalculation. I then go hands-on to show what data fields look like, plus things like browsing on the map to route to various locations, and Strava routes. Not to mention trace back and plenty more. Dive in for all the details!

@@shaneturner4630 Some of us need a bigger display because our sight has gone and wearing glasses and sunglasses is a No no. So it might not suit you, but it suits me. Edge screens as an engineer are difficult to save if dropped. This has been built so if you crash or it gets knocked off it will survive. So nice to have an opinion, but that is all it is.

I navigated 210 miles across the UK over two days using my Bolt and it was more than enough. My Bolt also tells me street names etc. I actually prefer the monochrome display on the bolt, I hated the colour screen on my Edge 520 which is one reason for parting with it.

In the absence of actually needing a new device I almost always find myself wondering what the next version may be like. I think with people reportedly waiting longer than ever to replace their smart phones, perhaps the similarly incremental approach in sports technology will eventually force manufacturers to look at introducing more substantial and fully functional features in each new device iteration. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Not enough features to upgrade from the bolt just yet. I will stick with Wahoo though as in my experience they don't have the poor software issues that Garmin have. The Wahoo's "just work". Garmin works .... sometimes.

I have one of these on order (got 10% off and free shipping). Assuming they get turn-by-turn with Strava routes working, this will do everything I need. I also like that I can recreate an outdoor ride using the unit to control my Kickr. I've been using an Edge 500 for seven years now. I also have a Hammerhead Karoo, but it's had enough issues that I just don't trust it to work all the time, so I'll give Wahoo a shot.

Excellent review. You addressed the screen size early on which I was interested in as going from a water-damaged Bolt (side button flap detached) to std Elemnt was disappointed in gaining a cm or 2 of height and no extra width. Looks like the Roam bezel is better. That said, I like the simplicity of the b&w display and the breadcrumb feature once you get used to it is delightfully simple. I never use turn-by-turn as it takes the fun out of riding. Just become savvy with the breadcrumb. Fearful that the extra map detail will make it less useable/more Garmin-like. Trying to fit too much into too little (not just size, but computing power)

The side button flap on my Elemnt has come loose as well, just so you know. It's a Wahoo issue not simply a Bolt issue (unfortunately)

I've the Garmin 1000 and it has been amazing!!! It is however 5 years old and battery lifespan seems to be dropping, even with everything turned off while riding. I am thinking of upgrading to the Edge1030 but was considering the Wahoo Roam as it does seem decent. A lot of my friends use Wahoo now and the price is a lot better than the 1030! Good video as always 👍

Could you do an update review if they changed/added features? I am in the market for a GPS for riding MTB. I love the features that Garmin has like telling you the remaining route distance, remaining elevation on a climb, etc. However, I can't stop seeing people gripe about software issues that plague the Garmin and that's really pushing me away from it and towards Wahoo, but I really want that data among other features. THanks!

Hah, I never noticed until now that Wahoo uses the top LED array to show you the index of the page you are at as you cycle through them -- cool! That said, I am probably switching from my Bolt to the Edge 530. Just waiting for the 530 to become actually available and see if any major issues pop up.

I know a lot of people jumping back on the Garmin bandwagon for the new 530, but honestly none of them even need a computer for routing. Leaving GPS out of the discussion, it seems the Elemnt Bolt still wins hands down as far as user interface and the companion app.

Garmin 530 or Wahoo Roam? I’m coming from a Garmin 820 which has been buggy at times, not as good at navigation as I hoped and after 2.5 yrs use now only has a 4 hour battery life. My 810 before that was less than perfect too. The 530 seems to have cool features but Wahoo has a reputation for being less buggy

@milehighsi

shanmac77 I’ve done this in the past. Trouble is that your phone screen isn’t designed to be on for that long. You have to force it not to dim or turn the screen off.. which means that the battery deteriorates. Even more so if it’s in direct sunlight. You’ll also want to get an anti-glare screen. Sweaty hands make operating a phone touchscreen quite difficult. So many times I struggled to unlock my phone after it locked during a big effort, i.e. exactly when you want data. If you’re in a crash, the last place you want your phone to be is out front taking the brunt of it. I could go on. These points are all fine if you’re a casual commuter. If you’re doing long distance or high intensity rides, though, a phone just doesn’t cut the mustard.

Marketing, most likely. They commit to a release date/press event well in advance. Things get delayed on the development side, and they ship a product out that might need software updates out of the box. I'd assume there's a solid 30-60 day lead time from manufacturing to delivery to a consumer.

Love your reviews! Now there have been a few more updates by wahoo, do you think it has improved its value versus a Garmin Edge 530? Having a wahoo kickr core I've been impressed how much better that device is now than the day I bought it thanks to steady firmware upgrades. Garmin seems to dump and run, never fixing issues before moving on to the next device. I'd like to upgrade to a Roam from a Garmin edge 130, but based on this review is be edge 530 all the way. Very interesting and great comparison with the other units. I am weighing up the ROAM vs the Edge 1030. As a long term Garmin user (Garmin Connect history and currently Edge 800 and VivoActive etc etc) the Edge 1030 seems to be the right choice. However to buy-in now, as the 1030 has been around for two years it may be that we could see a 1050 in a year or so. What do you think, Is it worth waiting to see what Garmin release, or could it be a long wait?

@jk0000079

It does work. It just has its own "features" from day one, which I am not too happy with. ... Like: When I am on a group ride, and half-way in we have a planned 20-30 min coffee break (long enough, so that I'd like to save the battery, and not force the Bolt to stay on the whole time), when the group decides to resume riding again, I do not want to be the one, whom they have to wait for, just because my Bolt needs 2 minutes to "resume" a simple 40K ride ... Or, when I am riding alone, using Bolt to navigate, in a foreign environment with a very dense set of round-abouts and heavy car traffic (getting out of town, to the start of a planned ride), and I take a wrong turn, by mistake, due to the low resolution of the Bolt's display, and me not wanting to be zooming in and out, when approaching a planned turn, instead of concentrating on the traffic situation - then there is no simple way, to get back on the planned route, but to stop, and see for yourself, how to slowly, manually navigate back, instead of being able to just keep riding. ... And end of last year, on a rented bike, there were unexplained signal dropouts to my Stages gen3 left-only crank powermeter. (We did eliminate all possible "simple" causes with Stages support, while I was still on vacation, like low batteries, eventual watter-bottles, or air-pump in the way, etc). I did send the powermeter to Stages, when I returned from my cycling vacation, and they did replace it, but they did say, that they found no issues with it, on their testing gear (and I have no way to re-test it, in a realistic scenario, since both my bikes @home have a different crankset {with their own gen2 Stages powermeters, which I had no connection problems with, thus-far, with the Bolt}) ... So I guess, I am just looking around, to see, if, 2 years later, there is a unit on the market, which will make my life with it less "bumpy".

Be wary of using the 'take me to' feature. I've used this on the ELEMNT several times and have come to grief each time. Ill stick with the Wahoo Bolt. Now we can see where Wahoo is way behind Garmin. These "new" features are only new for Wahoo and they are weak examples. You can be sure a new Wahoo Element "Bettr" must be in the works, the ROAM is an intermediate step. So think twice and save your money. Wahoo is great for the basics but if traveling and riding or doing an unfamiliar "training camp" Garmin is king. Nothing better than descending in the Pyrenees and having the next bend highlighted to judge the exit angle and thus your entrance speed. Garmin is amazing for racers, pros and traveling. I use Wahoo for training locally. Uploading routs using Ride w GPS works seamlessly w my Wahoo Bolt.

@@Pansee actually I believe the Bolt is more suited to that kind of tour than the ROAM, since the ROAM will most likely not have enough storage to store the maps for the countries you passed, while the Bolt has no such problems.

I have troubles with the power data displayed on my element ROAM, average power is higher than normalised power. Using a left-only 4iiii crankarm. Anyone else recognizing this problem? When comparing the 4iiii date to other power meters (not using the element roam) the readings are fine.

i Don't think you mention anything about the out-front mount. I read somewhere that it is a fragile thing that can break easily...and your precious little device can fall off...what's your take on this ?

Very disappointing to see Wahoo release such a lackluster product. They have shaken the market a few times but this is definitely not one of those times.

I'm still waiting for the bolt to get proper "take me X" routing.. you set a destination and the bloody thing takes you down every back alley it can find, like it's terrified of sending you onto a normal road in case you have an accident. I know it's not just an issue with where I live, because google maps picks a far more logical route (further distance but far fewer junctions and other stupid shit). Until they fix that, I'm not hugely interested in an upgrade

You're going to be waiting forever. The Bolt can't and won't ever have this capability.

I am new bike computers, so forgive my noobishess. Can you simply just record your rides out on the trails without downloading specific routes the device will want me to follow? Will these devices tell where I am at on trails without downloading them ahead of time? Also, I heard a problem with the Roam is that when you go off course, it tries to get you to go back to the point you originally left instead of how it is like on Garmins where you can just get back on track wherever you want. Is that true?

Depends on how you plan to use it. Wait 3-6 months and see which has made more headway and has the features you seek. Both released unfinished products and have already dealt with production issues.

I'm a Garmin user now, but back when I used to own an ELEMNT, there were two extremely annoying bugs that ultimately contributed to my ditching it. First, the cue sheet did not automatically scroll after a turn. Instead, the distance-to-turn field for that turn continued to count down into negative numbers. To get back in sync with my current location, I had to flip to the map page and then back to the cue sheet. Even then, the results were not ideal. Instead of showing the upcoming turn and the next two turns (which is what I think most users would want), it showed the upcoming turn and the two *previous* turns (turns that I had already made and did not care about anymore). Have these problems been fixed by now?
@pss999
@pss999 5 лет назад
Ah yes, I noticed that as well. Showing the previous turns was maddening. I haven't tried routing yet this year (long cold winter here in Montreal) so not sure if they've fixed that with any of the recent updates.

Or decrease the bezels. I often wonder how many people actually use the LED's. While I think in theory they sound good (and I'm sure some vocal users will sing their praises), it's something that almost nobody mentions when they talk about the ROAM. And when the BOLT only had one set of them, nobody seemingly cared - which makes me wonder what the % is of people that actually use them (or more specifically, pay attention to them).
@grvl307

@@Dcrainmaker I use the LEDs for power monitoring during training. I also use the top leds for routing as the speaker of the original elemnt is very weak. Had lots of great adventures that way :)

Bottleneck for maps and workouts only 2GB Space for Maps and Workouts on the device! I've contact wahoo support for space specifiaction of the roam. I've got back that the roam has 4GB but only 2GB are available for maps and workouts. The "but only" come from the wahoo support. Now we come to the problem,on the bolt a germany map has aproximatly 350MB on the roam 1,1GB! I live at the boarder of germany france and switzerland and make sometimes bike holydays in spain. With the bolt this was no problem with the roam it is! it is not possible to have the maps on the device! In the year 2019 its a madness to deliver a device with 2GB space for Maps. Competitors in this pricerange deliver 16GB space. In my opinion the roam isn't a new device its only the old elemnt with new sceen and button. I belive if wahoo want, the could make a Firmware upgrade to the deliver the new rudimentary routing feature also to the old bolt and old elment! With this less space and the high consumptions of map space the new roam is much more inflexible than the old bolt and elment!
@TheRdrage

I've now played with the Roam and saw it has basemaps of most of the globe on it. You can delete the countries, provinces, states, districts, etc you don't need, update those you do and should still have plenty of space. I have the entire US and most of Europe and some South America and it still has over 300mb available. I'm quite certain none of them have highly detailed maps for the entire globe stored on the head unit. Perhaps the Wahoo rep should have explained this to you.

Hi, I bought a wahoo elemnt roam , it is the worst thing I could of done, the elevation sensor is reading below what it should, so when I did a 200km cycle, it told me I had 920 meters, but really I had done 1230m on strava, 1246 on a garmin 520, and wahoo told me my reading on the ride would have to be out, 121m every 10km, before they would address the problem, which means my meters gained would have to read less than 10 meters climbing, on my 200km my cycle was in the slieve blooms mountain in Ireland, so wahoo roam is useless to anyone in Ireland that likes climbing
