My rundown on everything Kickr SNAP. Unboxing, setting it all up, and my first ride(s) on this wheel-on Smart Trainer from Wahoo. In this video I cover the unboxing, building, and a few tips and tricks for mounting your bike correctly and getting the unit working optimally. The Aussie Hump Day Ride features as the unit is pushed to the limits in the Watopia race lap, then we look at the data using Ray's DCR Analyzer Tool.

As a first time kickr snap owner and a newbie to all things cycling (injured runner in rehab!) your video contains valuable information that I wish they put in the quick set up pamphlet. I mean clean tyres should be obvious now that you mentioned it, but it wasn’t to me! The 2 x 360 degree turn of the blue knob very helpful as was the spin down explanation. Now if I could only work out how to get everything talking to each other! Garmin watch, iPad, cycling app etc. Thanks

What I love about your channel is that you don't insult us with crazy intros, constantly hawking the viewer to like and subscribe (as if we didn't know how or that's it's free), or always pushing your other social media, blogs, etc. You realize that the internet is efficient and the viewer is relatively proficient and just focus on content. Sorry this comment had nothing to with the video's content but wanted to share.

Cheers. I do ask people to sub, or like, or interact as that's really what keeps it ticking along. Zero growth means I'm doing it wrong. I need a quick intro to set the mood/etc... but I'm happy it's working as-is for now.

Well, that seals the deal for me! I’ve been going back and forth up and down the past two weeks binging your videos and just a few other channels but this video lets me know what to get for winter 2020-2021 here in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I so much appreciate what you have done. In addition Im going to save up for those excellent power pedals to use on my spin bike and for my road bike next spring summer 2021. I think it will be well worth the money spent.

Great review, as always. Collected my Wahoo Kickr Snap, set up was a doddle and I'm very impressed. This is my first smart trainer, and I've not longed completed my first 30 min ride on Zwift, can see me getting into this! Just need to build confidence in standing on the pedals tried it a couple of times and it just felt so unnatural, but then it probably wasn't helping that I was wearing trainers instead of being clipped in. Already looking forward to having another ride tomorrow.

Great review. Nice to see the power meter comparison. I own a snap. And had the initial setup issues. If you don't do the advanced spin down the brake force is wrong. So you can hit a hill in zwift and you will show less power. On the android wahoo utility you need to tap the snap trainer icon 10 times for the menu to reappear. Hope that helps others.

I'll be interested in a long term review, though with all your trainers I'm not sure how much use it will get. Mine started very accurate and repeatable with regard to power, but now I have no confidence in it at all. It's not a huge issue for me because I use my quarq, but it makes it a lottery for my wife who doesn't have a power meter. And yes, firmware updates, tyre inflated to same pressure, spin down before each ride. Another quality video though. Keep it up.

As a male e-bike user, I just stumbled upon an intriguing new project called the Freebeat Morph 2-in-1 e-Bike. Watching the video, I'm truly impressed by the outstanding features they've incorporated. The ability to charge the bike in indoor mode is mind-blowing! With a brushless 750W motor and 80Nm torque, this e-bike offers exhilarating speed and power. The 80mm front suspension and puncture-resistant fat tires promise a smooth ride on any terrain. The Smart Saddle Detection+ feature not only enhances fitness goals but also keeps me motivated during indoor and outdoor rides. The concept of converting burned calories into CO2-free miles is truly innovative and environmentally friendly. This e-bike could revolutionize the way we cycle! Can't wait to explore the outdoors with it!

Quick thought. Instead of marking the tension knob with a sharpie, use a piece of masking tape. We change bikes fairly regularly and top is rarely in the same position twice. Moving the tape is simpler than a tension knob covered in marks

My wife uses the data from her Snap. I have a Snap and a power meter on my bike. I've noticed how it reads varies a lot based on how long the spindown takes (basically how much you tighten the unit). It responds well but it seems like you really need to get that about 10-12s range on the spindown time to get decent data. I've even found the closer to 11s I get, the closer it reads to my dual sided meter. For the most part I think the Snap is a great unit because the lower price does leave money towards a dedicated power meter. Which means you can get good data both indoors and out and still have a very reliable smart resistance unit. Only thing that changes the cost a bit is like Shane said, if you use it a lot it is worth getting a trainer tire. So if you alternate between indoor and out a lot and only have 1 wheelset, it may be worth buying an extra rear wheel. An 11 speed wheel, cassette, rim tape, tube and tire cost about $150-250 USD depending on the exact spec (I got a MAvic Open Pro with Ultegra hub and cassette which was about $250, my wife got Mavic Open with 105 hub and cassette which was about $150 after all parts). That means the effective price of the unit for us was closer to $800 rather than $1200 for the full Kickr. Still, after buying 2 Snaps that means we had $800 left in the bank towards her power meter that she is getting this fall.

Thanks. You had much better luck with power accuracy than I had about 15 months ago. No doubt Wahoo has worked on the firmware in that time. What I would be interested in is how the power accuracy is after doing the advanced spindown on an Android device. When I had a Snap (and a replacement) myself and others with Android devices seemed to be the ones who couldn't get it calibrated right. ios users seemed to have far less problems.

I've had this trainer since October 2016, it was my first smart trainer, still is I guess. yesterday I found that there was an issue with the power connection on the turbo itself when preparing for a group ride, the power would cut out when female port going into the trainer would be at a certain position. You'd manage to get it to work and it would drop out again. I've logged 2260 miles on Zwift over the years and this was the first major issue with it. Thankfully I was able to get it fixed (Cutting/re-soldering PSU, taking out the detachable PSU section of cable and making it a solid cable) and rolling again. I Can happily say this trainer has provided me with a great amount of training miles for the price I paid at the time and when the time comes for me to upgrade, I won't feel like it hasn't lasted me.

Had three punctured tubes on my new Kicker Snap using a dedicated trainer tire set to prescribed tire pressure and giving it the Wahoo prescribed number of turns ( 2). I think the problem is leaving it tightened when not using it - its not set it and leave it, gotta slacken off and re-do it next next time...I'd wish I'd known so passing it on. Great to see your vid on Wahoo that they now have a calibration in game as I don't have a mobile and would have had to keep borrowing my Mrs/sons phone...you just need to do the first calibration via the Wahoo app and thereafter use the Wahoo in game one..after a 10 min warm up.
@KerenWang

By leaving it tightened I presume you just keep the bike on the trainer all the time? did the puncture happen during riding or just sitting there?

Ok so I'm new to the world of in door trainers and trying to decide if I want the Snap. Can you explain what you're talking about when you mention spindown, and how to go about doing so?
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 7 лет назад
Anecdotally, my Snap reads highest of all my power metering devices, then my Stages crank (I'm 53/47 left leg biased,) Garmin Vector 2s and my CycleOps Hammer in that order. As far as "road feel" I switched to the Hammer because I wasn't satisfied with the slightly lumpy ride. Perhaps that was more a problem with my trainer tires, but the Hammer is butter smooth. The Hammer is also way, way, way more stable in a full sprint, but that's more praise for the Hammer than a knock on the Snap. The Hammer is simply the most stable, planted trainer I've ever used.
@gplama
@gplama 7 лет назад
I did a workout session on the Hammer the other day after completing similar sessions on the Kickr (original). The ride of the Hammer was comparable to that of the Kickr.
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 7 лет назад
Right, mostly just comparing wheel-on vs direct-drive. I'm sure the Gates belt trainers like the Hammer and KICKR are very similar indeed.

@kidsafe
@kidsafe 7 лет назад
Trainer tires are a mixed bag for me. They're harder wearing, so less cleanup, but they also tend to derform over time. If you google for "trainer tire deform" and look for the image of the red Vittoria tire, that knot is basically what happened to mine.
@Bannister99
@Bannister99 7 лет назад
I too have the red Vittoria tyre and for the same reason release the roller each time after I finish. I found my Conti Grand Prix 4000s ii required too much roller pressure to get a good calibration.

Orginally I was running Vittoria Corsa CX (25mm) tires, just what I happen to have on my now dedicated trainer bike. Melted the rubber off the right side casing of the tire. I didn't notice it because my trainer sits close to a wall on the right side. Also went with the red Vittoria indoor tire, like it much better, and I also release the tire pressure from the roller between rides.
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 7 лет назад
Haha, yeah that was a lesson I learned too...not to run cotton-casing tires with glued on tread. I squeezed the melted glue right out from under the tread.

Thanks for your reviews I was trying to decide between this Kickr Snap and the Saris M2 I am not a regular bike rider by any means. Sometimes I'll hit a rail trail for a 30 mile ride, but there is only a 1% grade. I really don't like street riding, but I like the incline adjustment these trainers implement. I have a Fuji Traverse, which is a hybrid. I'm unsure if my bike is compatible though. It has 700x38 wheel measurements The 38 sounds like it may be too big based on the sizing guide What I can't determine is the hub width, which has to be 130mm or 135mm, but I'm assuming it probably is one or the other It's bit pricey for what I want to spend, but not out of my budget. If compatible, I'd buy the Kickr from REI, where it's $500US

Same - I got mine from mtb direct on the boxing day mini discount & just got around to setting it up this weekend ahead of autumn and was really surprised how much quieter it was than my old ‘dumb’ trainer! Add in that if you get one nowadays it’ll be the version 2, which as far as I can tell is basically exactly the same but with +/- 3% power accuracy, so they improved that a tad which is nice.

Cripes Lama, anyone under 20 just said "A phone what?". Probably the first time many would have seen a phone book! ;) That's quite the collection of trainers you have there! The trainer family was all together for once, so I lined them all up. Two left tonight for people to try before jumping into the $ investment of a smart trainer. Melbourne winter. ErgBnB is going well. :) Those are only FullHD, not ultra. Samsung 5100 40 inch iirc. The Alienware Alpha (original) don't have enough grunt to run Zwift in 4k, so it's a good match up.... for now.

Yep. The Rampa is a little more tricky for use with it's ANT+ OR BLE connectivity (it won't do both at the same time).

the skewer that shipped with my unit was too long as well. Wahoo support thought it was fine. I replaced it with another steel skewer I had and it's been great for almost 2 years.

Greetings, Thanks so much for these excellent and useful reviews, tremendous amount of information. You put a lot of time and effort into producing these and it is very much appreciated. One question as I contemplate purchasing a Wahoo Kickr Snap. Does the Wahoo Kickr Snap need to be calibrated before each ride, even if the bike has not been removed from the Kickr Snap since the last time it was calibrated. For example, I would probably leave the bike on the Kickr Snap for a few weeks before removing the bike for an outdoor ride. Thanks in advance
@gplama

If you're using it to read power numbers then Ideally, yes, because things will change like tyre pressure.

Greetings Shane, Just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for all the good, solid information you provide. I did purchase a Wahoo Kickr SNAP (refurb from Wahoo), This unit fit my budget for a trainer to use with Zwift. I'm really pleased with the SNAP, works perfectly. Had a few connection issues using Bluetooth, but switched to an ANT+ sensor, and now everything works flawlessly. Thanks again for providing all the information.

Hi Shane. Aside from noise, what disadvantages do you see with this unit compared with the (wow!) more expensive units from Tacx ans Wahoo? (Short of virtual bikes). Thx

Great vide Shane. Thanks. Have you seen any tire wear after using it a little more?
@gplama
@gplama 5 лет назад
Tyre wear depends on the tyre type, heat, how clean it is, etc. And there will always be wear with wheel-on trainers.
@CarlForde

after about 1400km my tire started to delaminate. I replaced it with a trainer specific tire which is quieter and doesn't require the roller to be as tight.

Just replaced my 10 year old Kinetic wheel-on Road Machine with In-Ride sensor for the Snap today. I also have the Wahoo Roam to track all my riding. Do I use the Wahoo Fitness app on my iPad as well or with the Roam track all measurements. Also signed up for a trail of the Wahoo Systm app to replace using Zwift (for awhile at least). Any thoughts on that?

Great review. Do you still rate the snap in 2020. I have a wheel on fluid 2 and want to venture into a smart trainer. I'm looking wheel on due to cost or should I try and save for direct drive. Keep up the good work.

It's still top of the pops for wheel-on trainers. I'd recommend investing in a direct drive if you're serious about power, ride feel, and giving the indoor workouts hell! :)

Copy of my wahoo support question (still waiting on response but figured I would throw it out here) : Bought my snap brand new last year and it worked however I noticed the power never read accurately. Every spindown reported the exact same calibration number as well so I questioned if it was calibrating properly. The only thing I could identify was that the tire was never centered. The reason is because I had to unthread the left side clamp all the way to ever get the blue clamp even close to tight. As I setup just now this year it's the same thing. It's as if the frame of the unit is too wide, and since the adjustment is only on the left the tire has to be off center if the bike is going to be tight. Is this a known issue and is there a solution?

Hi Shane, thank you for all the fantastic work you put in to your videos. I have a bit of a dilemma I have a fixed budget of $1000. My options are kickr snap + stages power meter or kickr. At the moment I am using a dumb elite mag trainer with estimated power via zwift. I spentld on average 3hours a week on the turbo and hope to be on about 5-6 hours in winter. My question is for an average beginner would I benefit from the wheel on + stages power meter combo as I would get consistent power or train with wheel on trainer? I would appriciate your thought. Thanx in advance. Manny

G'day Manny. There's really too many variables to give you a straight answer as to what's best for you. I usually leave the sales pitches and pressuring to buy in the hands of those who sell the units at bike shops. As for 'in general' points - Direct drive are usually a better experience for indoor training. Having a power meter outside is also a good option if you want to track numbers out there. Here's a video I've done on the pros and cons of both: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n7Z5K-qjFxQ.html

Power meter on the bike is definitely the way to go if you’re serious about your training. Guess that’s an answer 😉.

Great review. I've been waiting for these to come back in stock for over a month now. I was advised that they would be available again during mid-June. They said there was some downtime in availability due to some updates in the unit and production process. Can you comment on whether or not you received one of these "newer" models and what the differences might be between the new ones and the old ones? Thanks again!

Ryan, I'm just thinking that Wahoo is fixing a lot of the issues with the Snap. Once I worked though those on mine, it's been great. If you are looking at the Snap, I would keep waiting until the newer version (if that is what is in the works with Wahoo) comes out. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the KickR. Shane actually has a herd of KickR's, and his advice with trainers is always spot on!
@RyKnocks
@RyKnocks 7 лет назад
Tower Runner Yea, I would love a KICKR but the price just out of reach for me. I'm actually pretty happy that Shane couldn't really tell the difference once he started riding. I know there are more variables with the SNAP, but for the lower price point, Is be happy to deal with them until I can afford a direct drive trainer.
@towerrunner496

Ryan, once I was able to iron out some issues with the Snap, it's been great. With the 10.5lb flywheel it really does give that nice road feel. Doing Zwift races with it, is super intense, hard, and a great workout. Hopefully for you when it does come on back on the market, it will be because the address some things and took care of them. It is a great trainer for the price point!

I'm not sure what it is about your SNAP, but I got one secondhand and I found that 1 rotation after hitting wheel contact was already pretty tight, 2 full rotations just felt like way too much pressure. Have you ever heard of that being an issue before?
