When I stared at my seiko dresskx for a considerable amount of time, I noticed that the chapter ring is misaligned. I kept staring for longer and noticed that the chapter ring is not the issue, the whole dial itself is misaligned 😂. Ah Seiko never change.
I like how before this video a lot of people probably didn't notice the misalignment on their watches but are now obsessively looking at their timepieces and finding faults, only to be out of the warranty period. 😂
Ok, so the second hand alignment thing. Here's the explanation on that. Casio achieves that level of second hand alignment because they invested a ton of money into building machines and robots that position the second hand. It's impossible to do what Casio does by hand. So if you're getting a microbrand watch, or any watch that's assembled by a human, you're going to have a very high likelihood of getting a second hand that misses the markers vs. a machine assembled watch from Casio or some of the other big brands that have the money to invest in machine assembly. I think Swatch has done the same. It also raises the question of whether you would prefer a machine assembled watch with a well aligned second hand, or a hand assembled watch with a misaligned second hand. Or you know, just get an automatic if it really bothers you.
Thanks for the info Dave, knowledgeable as always :) and might I add, you can also get a quartz with a small seconds subdial, alignment will be hardly an issue when it is so small (at least it's not on my Bulova LP, but it does tick twice a second which helps). Or you can get a high beat quartz like in the new Bulova Jet Star (I'd very much like if you or Ben covered it btw, it's at the top of my purchase list right now). Cheers !

Old seiko quartz watches, such as King quartz, Grand quartz and Superior has no seconds hand misalignment. I like those because the movement of the seconds hand is very beautiful :)
This is not true. Many people seem to think Casios always hit their markers. I did too, in all the RU-vid reviews it did. Went to a Casio AD and saw many of them DID NOT. I'm from India and it seems Casio pushes the pieces that failed their qc to my country. I was saddened to see it.
I disagree about their QC being top of the line. I have 4 Casio watches, 3 of them have QC errors. One has a seconds hand that doesn't hit the markers, one had movement failure after a year, and one has a minute hand that doesn't accurately hit the markers either (it's digital/analogue hybrid so the minute hand ticks forward every 20 seconds). They're great watches for the money but you do get what you pay for in most situations with them.
@@stormyb3739that might actually be just a problem with how they were set. Some movements have a little bit of play, and the Casio manual instructs on setting the time five minutes over, and then returning the minute hand to the correct time. I have yet to see a Casio set correctly that doesn’t hit the marks.
@@stormyb3739Mate, in Poland authorized distributors of Swiss brands are cheeky enough to request customers NOT TO RETURN watches with this fault - "It's a feature of quartz watches." And they have 30% margins...!
I was lucky enough to get a new GMT Master 2 a couple of weeks ago. I have worn it pretty much constantly since (I am lucky enough to live in an area where my arm will not get ripped off), however NO ONE has even noticed it, not a single person, so i would not worry too much (oh, and the shop assistant in my local inner city tescos had an obvious copy of a batgirl, and he looked as happy as could be).
The misaligned dials is something i noticed in watches from the very beginning of my watch hobby years ago, yet this is the first time I've heard anyone else talk about it. I've seen countless reviews where i can clearly see the dial is misaligned, and yet never have anyone mentioned it. If i tell peoble about it they think im crazy, its like I'm the only one who can notice it.
The fact that a video like this not just includes Seiko but prominently features them, when they are moving upmarket, should really make you think twice about whether they deserve that much of your hard earned money.
6:49 It's actually fine for the stutter to occur as it's whats known as an indirect seconds hand. Vostok's are exactly the same in this regard. I was thrown off at first too as it doesn't look great I agree. It doesn't affect the time keeping at all as the seconds hand is seperate from the main gearing. You can futz about with the tension of the spring underneath on Vostok's though haven't done that personally. 👍 Edit : The stuttering won't affect all Vostoks/Miyota's - in fact, I've had many Vostok's and don't recall having problems, but it's not uncommon to find I think.
It may not be fine, but it is by design. It's even more common when the seconds hand is heavier. Sending it in for repairs or replacement won't fix it because all watches with indirect seconds hands will stutter eventually. For what it's worth, the indirect drive seconds hand makes the watch more resistant to certain types of forces such as swinging your arm violently in a circle.
My most egregious was from Phoibos. The three and nine o'clock markers should have been the same, but were different. Fun video, kinda like a Fail Army for watches. Thanks.
When Delma brought out the Oceanmaster Tide watch, the countdown to high tide was back to front! It showed the hours increasing to high tide, where one hour before the actual high, it stated "still 5 hours to go". Some reviewers are still reviewing this "mistake" version on RU-vid without realising the error or the potential dangers of such a safety feature.
The first batch of the 38mm Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer from 2021 had a bidirectional countdown bezel with 48 clicks instead of 60 and many reviewers at the time found this strange. However these bezels could be replaced as far as I remember… mine already had the correct 60 clicks version and I am glad since this would have drove me crazy. Everything else on this watch works and looks perfect.
From what I hear, I feel pretty lucky to have two perfect Seiko's! Although to be fair, they are special editions (Brian May 5 and Antarctica Monster) so you'd hope they'd put some effort into them!
I was lucky that the major QA issues I had were able to be resolved. One was with a vincero, and the other was with a Casio. The former exchanged the item for an identical model, and the latter fixed the defect free of charge.
Man, you don't always have a magnifying glass to detect these small defects. But, I agree with you that they are unforgivable failures in finishing quality control. I worked at a smartphone company and the criterion for visual inspection was the device being 30cm away from the eyes at a 45º angle. I don't know what the horology criteria are. Of course, they are very confidential.
Speaking of Seiko, has their QC problems been addressed yet? I mean, I did want to buy their watch but back off when I went to their boutique a while ago snd found that all, I repeat, ALL of their divers there had a misaligned bezel and some had messed up hour markers.

It is hard to find a quartz Tissot PRX with aligned seconds hand. As if they randomly did it not even tried to align the seconds hand leave alone performing QC after they finished
Hello Ben! Great pleasure to watch your videos! If you are interested, could you make a video about Sekonda watch and it's brand? They have quite an interesting history, but I cannot make my decision on this brand, and not many watch critics reviewed it on RU-vid despite its wide presence on the british market.
I'm puzzled as to why reviewers ignore Sekonda. They review Ali express junk and crappy fashion watches yet they completely ignore Sekonda who make entry level watches but have a genuine history in watchmaking.
The alignment of the second hand: assembly is either made by machine or by hand. Casio and other cheap mass produced watches are assembled by machine and they are the only ones who have a perfect alignment.
This is more like OCD check to a cheap watch. most of it not really a deal-breaking since it's only a tiny minor issue. also 6:39 is looks like a fit bezel. it's not a faulty because it is like that. usually you using prying tool there to remove the bezel.
My longines Hydroconquest quartz misses every marker and thats a 1k watch. It bothered me initially, but I'll just get it fixed next time the battery dies.

I pretty much avoid Seiko because of their alignment issues, as well as sticking with hardlex and cheap bracelets. I'm also turned off from micro brands after similar issues with Zelos and Boreallis.
I sold a Citizen and a G-shock because of the seconds hand missalignement (Citizen) or the minute hand missalignement (G-Shock). I am a poor guy, but I will save money for a top tier watch (probably an Omega Aqua Terra), just because I can't stand any imperfections in a watch!
Brands don’t care about qc anymore because the market doesn’t care. Despite major qc problems, watches across the brands routinely sell out. Until the market starts caring about qc, the brands won’t. #stopbuyingjunk
So I bought a red dial kamasu from jomashop and it kind of has this stuttering problem but it’s only ever about +5s a day and it’s not a super noticeable stutter, should I just keep it or should I replace? Pls respond as soon as you see this, today is day 29 since delivery
