This song is based on the famous Russian poem, “Wait For Me”, written by Konstantin Simonov. It is about a soldier at war asking his beloved to wait for his return.
The piece starts in the earlier time of war. As the seasons come and go, the horrors of battle weigh on him and the fire in his heart burns more and more. He becomes determined to take fate into his own hands and live to see his beloved once again.
The lyrics/poem:

Very interesting musical desicion. But really - you think this music is good for this text? The melodies like this came to our life even after USSR time, maybe it was late 1990's or maybe early 2000's. But the text is epic, well known, everybody who can read and accept lyrics knows this verse and associate it only with WW2 but not with medieval wars for example. And the music of WW2 period was absolutely different.

Hi Alex, although you are right that the poem was written during World War II, and thus, people may associate the words and message with that time period, it is unfair to generalize and say that everybody associates the poem only with World War II. This would be limiting the message and scope of the poem, and I highly doubt Simonov's intention was that only soldiers of World War II could relate and empathize with his words. Especially if you examine the text, it does not place itself in World War II nor limit itself to any time period in particular, which only adds to its beauty and impact. The general message that someone hopes their loved one does not give up on them can be applied not only to any war, but even to general life, where two people are bonded so strongly they can always rely on each other. This is why I interpret the poem as timeless and wrote music that can be considered anachronistic with regard to World War II. I appreciate your interesting view on the subject and thank you for listening!

@@PhilipTimofeyev Of course, you are the author and author is always right, it's an axiom. And maybe I am absolutely wrong. But I think I'm not alone in my position and there's some sense to consider opinions like this. I was born in 1971 and lived all this time in Russia so I can't associate this text with melody and arrangement like this. But your work is great - I like it very much.
