The Pokémon Ranger series has *CRIMINALLY* underrated pixel sprites and art direction in general. Even all these years later, I'm still bummed they never continued the series after Guardian Signs.
@@Khyzeyeah, that's its whole thing. Never understood people asking knowing the Switch is a hybrid console and a lot of people won't like being forced to play handheld-only.
Because the NDS touch screen was really small and pokemon ranger required precise movements. Completing the game using your fingers was extremely hard @@goofballjim6167
@@MrReset94 And this is not a matter of making it 2D vs 3D. This is a matter of someone stating a very popular observation, that being that before Pokemon went 3D, it happened to look far more colorful.
@@MrReset94ehhh not really, games used to have to be really saturated so you could see them on the shitty dim screens we had, it’s just a completely difference process now and they don’t really try to make it look insanely vibrant
So you’re telling me there’s nothing but grayscale in the 3D games? XY onward just nothing but drab colors? Come on. This dramatic exaggeration Pokémon fans do is ridiculous.
@@daddyjones126 so you're telling me this comment was subjective and we can be as dramatic as we want in terms of taste? This unnecessary teardown that "critics" do is ridiculous
Luckily games with pixels art have made a nassive comeback, i mean just look at stardew valley, undertale, deltarune, dead cells, celeste and pizza tower and antonblast
@gijsvanoeffelen1162 The came back in the early 2010's and are still around. In the grand scheme of things they weren't really gone that long, I suppose.
@@TheSkinnyZI must disagree as for how much it did fit Charizard, it _was_ the same one Rhyhorn also used and it's not like they could've just let that still be a thing going forward Also personally I don't dislike it at all, I think they did a rather good job with it
@@tomatogenesis I'm one of those who thought the Gen 6 cry overhaul needed to happen. In fact, I was championing it before we ever saw new gameplay footage of X/Y that confirmed it. That said, Stadium 1 and 2 had better battle cries.
I find it crazy that they never made a mobile game out of Pokemon Ranger. I don’t even necessarily think they wouldn’t find a way to butcher it, I’m just surprised they haven’t attempted making one
@@nunyabizness6089kirby is in a very similar boat to pokemon in this aspect. Its almost impossible to make a bad game out of it but people do find a way. Nintendo is the king of fucking around and finding out but eventually they come around
The best part of the spin offs like this and colosseum is that TPC didn’t have much to do with them. That’s why colosseum has so many unique and amazing animations. The personality of these games shined because they gave a damn.
Those games are actually connected to the main series through lore and through pokemon transfers so not much of a spin-off of pokemon just a different style in different regions of the pokemon universe
Every game that isn't a mainline pokemon game did Pokemon immersion better and I feel like those games are the reason we are all so immersed in the franchise as a whole. It feels like the main games just show us a blank reminder of what pokemon we like and we all think about every instance of that pokemon that isnt the one right in front of us. Anime as well, actually.
Never bothered with any of the side games except Gale Of Darkness (terrific game). The best title to date, in my honest opinion, is Emerald. There’s nothing like it. Even with its resemblance to other titles, it was mind blowingly great. Even the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire were weak by comparison, they just didn’t have it. I haven’t bothered (long-term) with any of the mainline since. It’s all seemed pretty rubbish. If they go back to the GBA style of game, I’ll pick it up, not really interested in anything else frankly. There are so many entirely original gba rom hacks at this point, there’s no reason at all for me to pick up a new official title they make when I know it will be inferior in my eyes.
@@Kerunou XD is always my go to favorite, even if the game has its own flaws. All the 3D Console pokemon animations were top tier every time, with few exceptions
I never stopped to think about the isometric view and how it helped lower the work it took to make all these sprite animations. Would still be nice to have this level of quality in a 4-directional mainline game with all features. Or a hack/fangame since that's actually more likely.
Pokemon Ranger was great in many ways. The idea of a certain kind of pokemon being useful for evoirement interactions instead of HMs would have been great in the main line. Instead of surf becoming a random sprite, the few pokemon you could ride on the water (empoleon and floatzel in 2) had their unique sprites. The DS era was peak pokemon, both main line and spinoffs.
I remember the guy who escorted you during the rayquaza mission. Dude never talked to anyone, always by himself. Then he witnessed the might of the legendary rayquaza and all of a sudden became friendly and eloquent. My boi rayquaza out there curing extra chromosomes
I wish more Nintendo DS games in general used pixel art. 2D games like Contra 4, The Legendary Starfy, and Kirby still hold up, while 3D games on the system look pretty rough.
I just realized that we aren't insane for thinking Charizard is like 2ft taller than its canonical height, because Charizard in these games was *exactly as tall as it should be* ie, bigger than a tall human.
That's a big problem with most pokemon I've seen. Half of them are way too small, in one way or another. Wailord weighs next to nothing, the majority of the rest of them are microscopic in size.
I played a lot of Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs growing up. Didn't play too much of the first one. But these were some of my favorite Pokemon games to date.
Ah, Pokémon Ranger...... One of the more interesting Pokémon spin-offs ever made. Too bad it only had three games released. It would have been great on the 3ds.
The Ranger games was probably the first hard challenge I experienced in the Pokemon franchise. It took me HOURS and/or DAYS to finally beat Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. I never got to finish the post endgame before my save got corrupted :( The fact that you didn't have a chance to save in between fights made it especially tough.
Pokemon ranger for those who dont know was an old DS game back in the late 2000's. This game brings back so many memeories along with pokemon mystery dungeon. Those were the golden year of pokemon and the highlight of my childhood ❤ :)
Wow, the feelings watching this video, I haven't seen this game for like 15 years and still it's feel home I'm so grateful I've spent my childhood with Pokémon
What I found odd was they never made a ranger game for the Wii U, a console with a separate touch screen that could actually be replaced if scratched up
Pokemon ranger was the first Pokemon game I played. This game taught me to do circles really fast as I still remember Salamence requiring 21 of it to be captured. Another part I still remember is the memorable music like Go-rock squad theme and the ice cave theme.
Never got why the main game series didnt have this pixel quality. We didnt get moving Pokemon sprites for decades while it would enhance the battles much more
This is almost like Megaman Battle Network crossed together with Pokemon. Only reason I didn’t play it was probably because it wasn’t a traditional Pokemon game.
Just watching the scenes with kyogre groudon and rayquaza just shows how amazing a 2DHD pokemon game would look! The amount of personality and charm it would have compared to the current gens, it's insane they haven't bothered with it yet...
Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs have even better graphics! In Guardian Signs, you can even fly on your Staraptor or Lati@s and ride the three Legendary Beasts. The graphics were so good back then! It proves how good a Pokémon game could look with an Octopath Traveler/ Dragon Quest III remake style.
This reminds me of the Megaman Battle Network games for GBA. Hell, that villain with the 3 legendary dogs remind me of Wily. Man, a pokemon game in that style looks so awesome.
This was part of the golden era of Pokémon, we got two more titles afterwards, even Pokémon Mystery Dungeon EoT/EoD got a third version with many new features. The best of all is that you could get special prizes in Ranger that you could enjoy in the core games of Generation 4, so it contributed to extend the other games' life a bit more. I could get Manaphy's egg, Shaymin, Riolu, Heatran and Darkrai, but there was even a Deoxys.
My DS had it's sensor function way off to the bottom right, so most of the left screen was off limits for touch functions. Somehow still grinded through all of Pokemon ranger as a wee lad. Absolutely banger game
@@pjmusser2894 Oh really? Back in the day sending it in for repair would also have been an option. Nowadays you'd have to do it yourself, or an electrician you know.
