I’m a yarn spinner and when my husband and I joined a Civil War reenactment group we wound up in a navy unit. I had to splice ropes to create guy-wires for our tent. None of the navy vets could show me how to do it. I had to go to my dad, a 20 year navy vet of WWII to have him teach me. He gave me the tools and showed me. It’s just plying rope (read yarn) back on itself. I wound up being the one to teach the knots to the sailor boys.
@ianbelletti6241

I'm an electrician. I had to learn how to do this because we put eyes in ropes for wire pulling purposes and knots are too big for the conduit when using larger ropes. I also learned how to do a crown knot in ropes. My challenge to them is to put a crown knot in that rope because, although a crown knot is similar to spicing an eye, it's harder to get right.

It is how a line(rope) is used on a boat/ship. Or rather what we do to the ends of line to make it easier to use in order to secure the boat/ship to the docks, another vessel, etc. You simply unravel the end. The diameter of the line determines how long. Then you make the loop the desired size. Next you unwind, or open up a section of the line braids/twists, and then weave those end pieces back into and through the pieces you opened. When there is tension on the loop you just made, the line tightens around the ends you just wove back into itself. This way, all a seaman/deck hand has to do it throw that loop over a cleat on the dock and pull the line as tight as needed and then tie the other end of the line to a cleat on the boat. There are other types of ends you can make, mostly a fist or stub that keeps the opposite end from unraveling. Splicing can also be used when making 2 shorter ropes into one long rope. Sure, you could use a knot to make a loop or extend a line, but splicing is smaller in diameter, looks better and functions better, plus most knots take up more length of the line.

@timothyboone5003 Год назад
@tillerdiller9236 You’re correct except in your reasoning. 5 times the diameter of the fitting the eye will be used on is the U S Navy recommended eye size. There’s two stress points to consider. The angle at which each sides enter the splice and the D/d ratio. The Ohio has no influence. I’m curious why you would think that? When properly spliced the weakest point is where the standing part enters the last tucks of the splice. Tapering the splice can alleviate this to some degree.

@jaysonlima7196
@jaysonlima7196 Год назад
@@GoingGoneGalt With spectra I've found that if you use a Swedish fid kind of backwards, (pushing it down under the yarn, [towards the splice, instead of the more normal away from it] and feed the line in from the point to the handle until you have most of the slack out of the yarn and then pull the fid put while pinching the yard to the handle. Helps pull it nice and tight without slipping everywhere like specta loves to do. I also like to go up 4 tucks in spectra instead of the standard 3. Of course all that assumes 3 or 4 strand laid line... braided line is a little more tricky.... But a chinese fid (not sure if they have any other names but we make them aboard soo yeah .... they are basically a 2' piece of 4g stainless wire bent and twisted to form something like the eye of a needle, very good for working with "flat braid" spectra but useless for cored lines. If you are dealing with a cored line the biggest mistake I've seen people make is using the wrong fid, a Swedish fid is just about useless and you will be hating everything and everyone around you while questioning every decision you've ever made... you want a good quality metal tube fid with a fairly sharp point. Spectra doesn't stretch and its almost as cut resistant as kevlar, so something with a fine point to get between the fibers and push them aside is vital, so is making sure that if you cut it with a hot knife there are no melted bits that are wider than the yarn itself, they will grab fibers and get stuck like no other. If you are cutting to splice a good sharp knife is better trust the fid to keep the yarnd together, and use the hot knife for final dressing (for my purposes I've never bothered, fish don't care if the splice is a little ugly.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GzlBEsUNa6Q.html Here’s a tutorial for a splice! We are selling more of the splices to those who ask (at regular price) the same one in video would be around $250 including shipping:) order it here: rightrope.com/product/high-tenacity-unmanila-rope/ It was 4 in diameter, 10 ft long, and you can add the eye splice under “Select Rope Ends” Hope this helps!! Let us know if you have any questions:)
