It's the movie version of the musical version of the 2007 indie romance "Waitress." And now, it'll be in theaters for an extended run. "Waitress: The Musical" captures the Broadway sensation, based on the late Adrienne Shelly's movie about a woman who works at a small-town diner and makes pies to cope with her troubles. Starring Sara Bareilles, who also wrote the songs. Co-starring Drew Gehling, Charity Dawson, Caitlin Houlahan, Christopher Fitzgerald and Dakin Matthews. In theaters through Dec. 21.

I saw it in a theater and I really liked it. I'm glad it's staying around longer. Showing these Broadway musicals in theaters is a great idea. It allows people like me to see a Broadway musical when they can't get to New York or see when it's on tour.

Had the pleasure of watching this on broadway with most of the cast we see in the film. A joy from beginning to end. One of my favorite musicals ever.

I saw Waitress on Broadway back in 2017 largely with this same cast. I was so impressed by how effortless Bareilles made this all seem. Was definitely happy to see it in theaters last weekend and glad you all decided to talk about it. It’s available to preorder as a digital and I believe physical media release for later down the line. So I’m happy this will be out there for people to discover in the future. I loved this show.

Saw this on Broadway during its revival. I was originally going to see something else, but tickets were on sale for this so I decided to do a blind buy. Definitely no regrets here. Absolutely charmed and wowed by it! I'll try to see it in the theaters, but it's never quite the same as being in the room... where it happens.

I've been a fan of Adrienne Shelley since before her directorial debut, since seeing her in Hal Hartley's Trust and Unbelievable Truth. I had her first film, Sudden Manhattan, on DVD. Very strange but fun movie that screams "my first movie." It is really good, but at that point she was largely copying the style of her mentor, Hartley. Then you can see some really good growth between that and her second film I'll Take You There. Another excellent hit. With Waitress, it seemed like she finally found her voice and had fully come into her own. And then she died so suddenly and tragically. So sad. I never saw the musical. I wanted to, but never got the chance. I didn't know that it was available as a pro shot in theaters. I'm excited to go see it now. Thank you.

I got to see this on Broadway with Jordin Sparks in the lead role, but Caitlin Houlahan and Christopher Fitzgerald were still in their roles. It’s was a last minute “it’s the only show with seats” purchase. And I loved every second. Alonso is right… Caitlin’s song is so wonderful and moving.

loved this movie!!! definitely best of 2023 list worthy!!! it also is a full circle moment because if memory serves me christy reviewed the original film sitting in for roger on ebert & roeper!!!

Thank you for covering this! It's such an important story that I'm glad more people are getting the chance to see. I've loved it since seeing the indie and have enjoyed this cinematic release as well as seeing the show live on tour.

My mother owns a bakery that specializes in pies, so when the movie Waitress came out all those years ago, I figured that giving her the DVD would be a slam-dunk gift. She loves pies, she loves romance, what could go wrong? Turns out she HAAAAAAAATED IT. To this day, she still talks about how much she hated that movie. Needless to say, I won't be dragging her to see this musical.

2007? i quit blockbuster in november 2006 and remember seeing this film on the shelves.....TIME TRAVEL SHENANIGANS! regardless, i cant wait to see this. THIS is what i want to see more off. just have the cast do a recording in an empty theater with some fancy imax hollywood whatever cameras and professional directors/cinematographers and release those to the movie theaters instead of doing these movie musicals. or put em on streaming. hamilton was disney plus and memphis was on netflix. WORKS FOR ME!

I love this movie, the 2007 version, I will have to do a rewatch and watch the musical when it streams. I also love Sara's music, she is great!! I would have rated the movie an 8.5 back in the day, gonna have to see if it holds up. I think it will.

They kept it really true to the original screenplay by Adrienne Shelly. I cried the whole time. Joe Tippet's Earl was intense.

I really loved this version of the film. I was trying to see it on stage forever but it just never materialized. I hope more broadways do adaptations this way, it didn't replace my want to see shows on stage, it only amplified it.

Knowing Broadway viewers, they will watch a good show multiple times. Watching things in theaters will not diminish the desire to see a show live on stage. It will just introduce a larger audience. I hope they do more of this. I just wish Fathom include something special like cast interview or something to make me pay full price tickets.

Review makes me want to rewatch Hal Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth, the movie that launched Adrienne Shelly's acting career. It's a comedy, and some Good Samaritan uploaded it to youtube. Worth checking out.

I saw the musical at the playhouse in Wilmington, De. I told someone it was ok but nothing special. I would not try to get another person to see it. Music was mundane and the acting was so so.
