What a wonderful piece of old film footage,,, brings back so many memories from when I was growing up there,,,, but I must agree with a lot of comments the last time I was there it was very run down,,, Many many thanks for posting the video.
What a delightful short film, many thanks for uploading this Terry! I moved to Wakefield from Batley just over a year ago now and, whilst the town has many improvements to make before it catches up with Batley, it's not the worst place in the world to live!
A great city. I visited there a few weeks ago after being away for ten years though and was shocked at how run down the city centre had become. Lot's of shops boarded up and many check cashing/payday loan, pound shops, betting shops etc. the Ridings mall was glum and empty and most shocking of all was how few people were there on Saturday afternoon which used to be packed. I hope Wakefield can somehow return to it's former glory as a hub for socialising and shopping.
i agree with most of the comments on here...wakefield has gone downhill,a basicly derelict town centre full of eastern european migrants...and buses speeding through the city centre, also why do people in office keep going on about how wonderful the hepworth centre/museum is ?....its a horrible land mark on what was a wonderful city
Wakefield council need to help restore wakefield centre. Its pretty much disgusting at the moment. Even if they paid a few grand out to tidy the old abandoned shops near the old cinema and give them a lick of paint. Wakefield just looks so run down and aged. Trinity walk is just not enough.
At the moment wakefield isn't too bad appearance wise it just isn't perfect. The area near westgate station looks fantastically fresh and many other places have had a good lick of paint. However kirkgate is still an abomination near the old abc cinema and the bus station is one scary place in terms of people...
Well I'm pretty sure my eyes were open last time I was there. By the way, I grew up in Wakefield. So was it an off day or am I right that the city centre has far far less people (I would say Saturday had only 1/5th of the people that used to go there.)
Don't agree with you about the city been run down. It's had far more investment these last 10 years than it did for the previous 40. The New Trinity Walk, Hepworth Museum, the new area near Westgate station that has been built, new Pinderfields Hospital, that's just in the last few years. The only thing that got built in the previous 30 years was the Ridings. As for there being check cashing shops & pound shops, well that's because of the economic problems and is the same in every City.
