I took a walk around Wakkanai City from Wakkanai Station.
Wakkanai City is the northernmost city in Japan with a population of about 32,000.
There used to be a ferry service between Wakkanai Port and Korsakov in Sakhalin, Russia, but it has been suspended since 2019.
The North Breakwater Dome, a landmark of Wakkanai, was built in 1936 and used as a pier for railroad liaison ships connecting Hokkaido and Sakhalin.

I arrived in Wakkanai on New Years day 1956. We were met at the RTO by a military track vehicle pulling a sled type trailer. We loaded our gear into the trailer and headed toward the USAF air station north of town. The snow was at least six feet deep and our track vehicle zipped along on top of the snow as the road was never plowed to the pavement. Upon arriving at the air station I asked why this military installation wasn't surrounded by chain link fence. The guard at the spot where the gate was replied that there was a fence but it was currently buried in the snow. His gate shack which was about 4 X 4 feet was lifted daily to be on top of the snow. It continued to snow until about April. I lived on the second story of a barracks and snow was at my window sill. The school children built snow animals in the school yard that were as large as a military truck. They also skied down on the hills located just behind the school buildings. Downtown had one main street that served as a commercial way for trucks, buses and horse drawn wagons. All stores were just shops and eateries were even smaller. There was a movie house that had heating pipes for your feet and allowed smoking and drinking while watching a movie. The merchants were friendly but didn't speak much English so I learned Japanese in a hurry. I remained in Wakkanai until mid November 1956 just as the snow season was beginning. I have fond memories of Wakkanai, it was an experience that I'll never forget.

You know the old Wakkanai, don't you? I think some places have changed and some places are still the same. Wakkanai seems to have had a tough time with the recent heavy snowfall. It is one of the hardest climates in Hokkaido, but I think it has a great atmosphere.

One of my favourite cities in Hokkaido, it just seems so cozy and has everything you need in a Japanese small city like shops, cafes, izakayas , restaurants and even a nice cinema. And mixed in with beautiful nature for camping trips and hanging out by the sea

That’s good. Spent a few days in Wakkani in February ‘23 after catching train up from Sapporo and stayed at the Surfeel Hotel. Had a great room looking out over the port and beyond. Could just sit and watch the ever changing weather rolling in all day but explored town and its excellent and friendly museum and caught the bus up to Cape Soya. The sky cleared and we could see Sakhalin in the distance across the ice floes. It was a bit chilly at -25C. Have never seen so much snow in fact whilst we were in Wakkanai and that snow made the place look a little more attractive than this video shows in my opinion. But it does look warmer and easier to get around! We wandered up through town in snow showers to a great little Nepalese Curry house on our first evening - amazing food - and then had a great steak and bottle of red at Vin Restaurant the next. Will definitely go back and this video makes me think that it will be quite soon. Thank you.

@@tombowalking8743 unfortunately my family did not enjoy as much as we should. my wife and i was sick before came to japan so by the time we came to wakkanai we were already coughing with bad flu symptoms. the cold wind and weather at wakkanai made the flu worse so we had to go back to the hotel to rest early after going to cape noshappu and cape soya. that being said we loved the view of the sea at the roman breakwater. hahah the snow was so thick there it went up to our waist and we only walked a little bit on the breakwater. we enjoyed our open air onsen with the falling snow at dormy inn too. hope to go there again in the summer.

I asked myself what is the most northern city in Japan? And then watched google Maps and founded Wakkanai! And then I searched on youtube to find a video about that. Japan has stopped growing for the last 30 years, and its population is shrinking. I think the impact of this will be more pronounced in smaller towns in rural areas. It's a shame.
