A new single release from Newport’s Ruby Kelly is always an event and her third single 'The Roots' out on June 20 is no exception. Recorded at Sunderland’s Birdland Studios, The Roots was inspired by Ruby’s liminal identity between two countries, portraying a bittersweet tale of a young woman trying to find her way in the world.
Mixed by Lily Brooke, The Roots combines honest lyrics and slick production with a contemporary folk vibe. The track features drums by Dave Hyde of the Futureheads, bass by Dan Donnelly of The Levellers and cello by Hannah Miller of the Moulettes. A music video filmed at Barnes Park in Sunderland is set to be released alongside the single, produced and filmed by Lewis Pashley.
Brought up in Wales and moving to the Northeast of England at just 18 to study at Sunderland’s Northern Academy of Music Education, Ruby’s music crosses over with vivid storytelling as she sings of the struggle of moving away from her hometown, while recalling the experience of heartbreak and identity loss as a young girl in today’s world.
