Unfortunately. The free market can't decide because people's health insurance makes agreements with pharmacies so for some people, switching to CVS is just not an option. If you're dismayed, call your health insurer.

Walgreens’ decision to cower to the threats made by those attorney generals is disheartening, to say the least. Especially because they have decided to not sell mifepristone in a few states where abortion is legal or protected. The threats made by the attorney generals have no backbone- the claims that they made were false and there has been no lawsuit filed that challenges the sale of abortion medication. The attorney generals who wrote the letter used the Comstock Act as a point that sending abortion medication via the mail is prohibited, even though it has been stated by the Biden Justice Department that the Comstock Act applies only to drugs that are intended for criminal use, not to those received under prescription. Thus, it appears that Walgreens values its business profits more than it does providing access to healthcare. However, it is somewhat understandable that they have decided to falter because they are under the assumption that they are at risk of losing all access to providing business to individuals in those restricted states. Yet, their decision to discontinue fulfilling prescriptions for mifepristone due to the threat of legal consequences widens the desert of lack of affordable and accessible reproductive healthcare for people who are in desperate need to terminate a pregnancy. It is yet another win for conservative policymakers who are anti-abortion to intervene into a field that is outside their scope of knowledge and practice. Walgreens’ decision will add to the detrimental consequences of restricting abortion access, consequences that we are starting to see. When large corporate companies like Walgreens make such a drastic choice, instead of standing up for protecting the lives of people who identify as female, they cause a huge impact in how other large corporate companies will act. In order for anything to change within America, we need to have big voices like Walgreens committed to improving the lives of those in need who often go unheard. Without their support, our healthcare will continue to suffer from the repercussions.

With the reversal of Roe v Wade the states have the right, as they always should have, to regulate abortion. State laws outlawing abortion must be upheld by businesses. This is not a constitutional issue; this is a state’s right issue. Some states where abortion is currently legal are now in the process of outlawing it, after the decision last year.
